The Secret Powers of Unity: Uncovering Parashat Nitzavim
This week’s parasha opens with a mysterious statement from Moshe Rabbeinu: “You are standing today, all of you, before Hashem your God.” What exactly does Moshe mean? Is he emphasizing that today they stand before Hashem, or is he pointing out that they stand united before Him? Interestingly, the word “nitsavim,” which is normally used in the Torah to describe the standing of Hashem and angels, is used here for Bnei Yisrael. Why?
Could it be that Moshe is revealing something deeper about the greatness of the Jewish people at that moment? And what about the new alliance hinted at in the third pasuk-what is it, and why isn’t it fully disclosed?
