- How does the M1 MacBook Air perform in 2024? We test the performance of the M1 MacBook Air with over 50 Safari Browser tabs open to see how well the base model with 8 GB of ram holds up. Is 8 GB of ram too little for the average user on a MacBook in 2024? In this video find out how the base model M1 Air performs under load and if it still works good at the start of 2024. Should you still buy a M1 MacBook Air? Watch this video to find out as we perform a stress test on the M1 Air.

I don’t think I’ve ever had more than 4 tabs open at a time. Christ, after 3 tabs I would probably forget what I was working on in the first place.
I don't either but I know some people like to leave them open for some reason. This proves it's possible I guess.
all that means is that you don't have ADHD lmao
@@craigneidel Me, TDAH here and I keep around 20-30 tabs open + notes, reminders, calendar + iMessage, WhatsApp and Mail + Apple Music.
I Just purchased the M1 air as I was able to trade in my 2017 MacBook Pro for $300 at Best Buy. I considered spending a bit more for the M2 air, but I couldn't justify the cost considering the base model was still 8gb of ram. I am extremely happy with such an inexpensive upgrade as my old MacBook Pro was bad is just about every way. Love your channel, keep up the good work!
Yes, the M1 is quite a bit better then the older systems for sure. Thanks for posting and watching the video. Appreciate that for sure and also the nice words.
Craig - I have a MacBook M1 Air, got it when it came out. Now I don't use it ever day as I have the Mac Studio M series and a Mac Mini Pro that I use for video editing, but I never had any issues using the MacBook Air M1 for any of my video and photo editing work flows. Granted I'm not exporting 4K video and I don't pretend to be a TH-cam creator, (there must be a zillion out there today), and BTW it's the base model. And it can handle anything I can throw out it. I don't care about benchmarks, that's not real world for 93.5% of normal users. Thx for your video, and BTW, BestBuy has the MacBook Pro 14" M1 16GB unified memory 512GB SSD, which is a super performer, refurbished for $1349, or Apple has the MacBook Pro 14" M2 16GB unified memory 512GB SSD for $1599, 1 year warranty.
Thanks and the moral of the story is that each use case is different and that benchmarks are not everything. I did see the refurbished 14" for the $1349 at Best Buy but not sure if their refurbs will be as clean as some others. I was reading some of the comments and I think they can come with a dent or two.. Anyhow thanks again for watching and the info. Appreciate that for sure.
Thanks for another fantastic video, Craig. Your test only reinforces that my MacBook Air M1 exceeds my current requirements for usage. Thank you again.
Thanks Franceso. Please note that this test was with Capcut which may not be optimized nearly as much as FCP etc. I might do a test in the future to account for that. But at the end of the day it really depends on a specific workload and the benchmarks are not always accurate. The 8GB can become an issue at times but for the most part it is good enough to get work done when needed.
I’ve used a pc at work and home exclusively since 1995. On a whim about 2 months ago I decided to buy a MacBook.
It’s easy for many people to think they need the latest l, greatest and most powerful machine.
I bought a basic M1 13”, sight unseen and figured that if it wasn’t good enough I’d just pass it off to one of my kids and buy something better.
I was honestly surprised at how good this machine is. Granted it’s only used for basic office work, but in this regard it blows away the windows competition at the price point of $750 I paid for it.
yes, they are very powerful machines for the cost and very smooth. Good luck with everything and for posting.
Reviews on Amazon back up the claim, Thank you for posting. Craig!
Thanks. Figured a test like that on the m1 would help people.
Your psychic abilities have improved!@@craigneidel
a little bit.
Did the same with base M2 Air - maybe with slower SSD this will stutter a lot
I'll see if I can try m2. Thanks.
I sometimes kick myself for not getting 16gb on my M1 air even though I only use it for basic stuff. I honestly never have more than 10 tabs open with 1 or 2 simple apps.
I think a lot of people complain about these machines only having 8gb are still in the windows mindset. These things are so optimized that 8gb goes a long way.
Yes, but if the 8 works good for you then no need to upgrade. It all comes down to individual workflow and what you are using it for. Thanks for posting.
Hey Criag. Im thinking to get a Macbook air but im really very confused between the M1 Air, M2 Air (either 256 gb or 512 gb if possible) and the M3 air but im not at all a heavy user. I would just use it for watching videos/browsing and nothing else probably.. so how much time (in years) do u think will the mac m1 provide me the best of its quality or shall I wait for the prices of m2/m3 to go down as i want to use the mac for several years without hesitating its performance😊
I would get a M2 or M3 Air at this point. Also, the more important thing is ram. I would get 16 GB of ram and then either of those will last well into the future. I think that is the key as the cpus are all fast now.
Could you do another test with complex web apps open? like google docs, clickup, behance, figma, canva etc.
I can't do another video on that but it will always depend on exact apps running. Buy one and test it with your work flow and return if not working in that flow.
Great video! Very informative. I just got a brand new base model Air for $650, which I think is a steal, all things considered. Especially since I'm coming from a base model 2015 MBP running Monterey, and the difference is like night and day. Amazing what Apple has achieved with their M-series of chips.
@@technotoad yes m1 is still a nice system.
Still Happy using Macbook Air M1 that I Bought in April 2023. I use it mainly for music production and video editing. I sometimes push my M1 Air a bit with many apps open and tabs open including Windows 11 VM (Parallels), and surprisingly my M1 Air still responsive even with some little but noticeable lags.
Yes, I was surprised also. With 50 tabs open it did use swap but overall still felt pretty snappy to say the least with other apps. Thanks for sharing.
what apps u used for vide editing ?
I use Capcut for Mac.
is it okay and laggy for macbook air m1?
@@craigneidel
My M1 Air is still going strong. It handles just about everything I try on it. The only time I see the swap usage go up is when the gpu is getting hammered.
I’ve played through all of Alien Isolation on it (on an external 1080p monitor) and it had no problems.
Yes, I think people think it is slow for some reason. They still work great. 16 GB is much better if you are doing heavy video editing but most don't do that so this is fine.
Doesn't answer my question. I usually have at least 100 or ever 400 tabs opened in several groups in Safari along with watching video player. Old MacBook Pro Core-i5 with 16Gb RAM almost not working in this scenario. MacBook Air 16 Gb RAM work perfectly. But still a question if M1 or M2 with 8Gb can work with hundreds tabs in Safari?
Funny, I mean 100 to 400 tabs is a bit ridiculous for sure. If you are doing that then pay up for a better systems as you might be in the top .0005% of people with tabs open. I mean 400 tabs - why? Funny.
great video I got the m1 3 years ago this January 30th as a birthday present my wife got the ssd up to 512 and the 8gb ram but that gave me the 8core cpu and 8 core gpu, it dose everything I need photo edits , video edits just getting into that and even a bit of gaming
might move up in 2026 but not before
Yes, they are plenty of power for most people. Yes, more ram is better but you can still accomplish quite a bit with the 8 GB and that is what I wanted to show others. Thanks again.
I never have more than five tabs open. Honestly how many people have 20+ tabs open at once? I sure it happens but I can't imagine why.
Maybe someone could enlighten me...
People tell me they keep 50 open all the time. I don't do that either but wanted to prove 8gb can handle it.
Good test, like to see one with a MacBook Pro M1
Thanks for watching.
Great video. You would think the results of ALL that testing done in 2020 on this machine would be permanently burned in our brains! Nope! I’ve read many recent comments complaining about the M3 MacBook offering just 8gb of “UNUSABLE” RAM! The M3 is even more efficient than the M1 chip! Did online banking and Amazon shopping suddenly balloon to unusable proportions?
M3 is unusable, it has more cores and since its unified memory it affects it way more than the air m1
that's not the type of efficiency they mean when they're comparing those CPUs lol. they're talking about power efficiency. And yes, websites in general have become far more cluttered and use more memory because of it
@@Grovichun yes, I was being over the top purposely because I believed everyone would remember the most common description went something like “it’s fine for people who watch a little TH-cam, do light video editing and photoshop and who typically have multiple tabs open while WEB BROWSING”.
I’m sure the same type of people who the M1 was perfect for, the M3 is just as useful.
@@Grovichun it has nothing to do with ram lol, the topic is about the ram bob. Find render comparisons between m1 air and m3 both 8gb, while air is in orange zone with 8gb m3 becomes in red
The M1 can run into issues with 8 GB for sure but for most users (90%) it works fine. That is all this video was to show since so many people ask me.
While the M1 is still quite a usable machine, if I were in the market I would spend the extra on the M2 for the improved design and longer Mac OS support. M2 MacBooks can be had for nice discounts right now.
Yes I did a video on that. But I just wanted to see if I can show people that it still works good since so many ask me. Thanks for watching
Right now, I have a Mac mini M1 (8Gb RAM and 512Gb SSD) at the office and a Mac mini 2012 (Core i7, 16Gb Ram and 512Gb SSD with OCLP). I will replicate this test in the old Mac Mini I use at home.
Yes, see what happened but the 2012 should be slower and the ram is only 16 GB instead of 48. So I'm sure the M1 will be faster for sure but it will be an interesting test. It also depends on the video software and things like that. Mine was a very specific test to show people that workloads are different and that is why benchmarks don't alway mean what they appear. Thanks for watching.
From time to time, I stretch the 2012 Mac Mini a little bit. I work mainly with Excel and Word, besides using the browser (usually 4 or 5 tabs, as I always have gmail opened in 2 tabs and the others I open to access news or TH-cam). Also, I work very little time in the old Mac Mini, so it fits perfectly my needs. At the office I have the same sort of usage of the Mac Mini with the difference that I keep Whatsapp active. Since this app was updated to meet the silicon specs, the RAM usage very, very rarely reaches the yellow colour. With the version emulated by Rosetta it would become yellow a lot more frequently but it never slowed down. I also have an antivirus which I don't know if I should but it eats bit of RAM also.
Yes, would be interesting to see how quick the 2012 is vs the M1. Thanks again for posting.
Next video repeat test with Chrome 😮 !!!
Maybe, I'll see what I can do.
@@craigneidelThank you sir! Didn’t mean to come across as being rude. Definitely appreciate your tips, advice and research. Was curious about chrome performance because it’s well known that chrome is a resource hog and not as well optimized for MacOS as safari. However, chrome has an M1 architecture installation version so perhaps that one is more optimized?
I didn't think that at all. Yes, it could be a good test since people do say it uses more resources. I do think it got better recently on the resources side though so it might be good to know that. Thanks for posting.
