    What's really scary is that portrait painters tried to be as flattering as possible. That means the real people looked even worse.

      Indeed!!! As a nurse I cared for handicapped individuals. Some were frightening looking at first sight. Most of the individuals I cared for were very sweet. A couple were quite the opposite and did scare at sight and behavior wise.

    I genuinely feel sorry for Charles II. He is probably the most mocked king in history, but he could not have impacted how he was born or who were his parents. If the mockery is this bad now, imagine how it must have been to him while he was living.

      Unfortunately, schadenfreude, or feeling pleasure for other peoples' misfortune, is such a common human emotion that most global languages have a word for it. (We English-speaking folk even imported the German word.) You are so kind, to go beyond that and empathize with the unfortunate Charles II and others in the Hapsburg family.

    5:50 Nurse here. If women were given "copious amounts of alcohol" to produce male heirs, it doesn't surprise me that many of the children didn't survive.
    With the intake of alcohol during pregnancy, the foetus (fetus) will acquire fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) which can cause miscarriage, stillbirth and preterm birth as a complication.
    Those infants born with the condition often have a much reduced life expectancy. The symptoms of FAS in living children are things like craniofacial abnormalities, short height, low body weight, small head size, poor coordination, behavior problems similar to ADHD, learning and speech problems along with Intellectual disabilities.
    Considering that these symptoms pretty much define the Habsburg physical deformeties as well as the intellectual disabilities, I'm surprised that no one has ever made this connection to the attributes of the family itself. So much is the very definition of them!

    • @jaymartin505
      @jaymartin505 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Interesting I wonder if FAS combined with the inbreeding just doomed the family

    Medieval royal culture seems downright distopian. Maybe it's just because I'm viewing it through a modern lense, but the lifestyle and practices of the very wealthy and powerful of that era just seem so yucky to me. It gives me the same feeling as watching My Strange Addiction or other reality shows with questionable ethics. It's just gross and upsetting. Hard to believe that was just the thing for a thousand years or so.

  • @pooryorick831

    Would I rather be a medieval king? Or the lower middle class American in the early 21st century that I am? No question. My life has been better than any medieval king could dream of. So even though I covet that rich lifestyle to a degree, I wouldn't trade with a medieval king for anything.

      That would be the Lorraine Hapsburgs, a cadet branch who ruled the Austro-Hungarian Empire and had the good sense to stop marrying their blood relatives. It's the Spanish Hapsburgs who did all the inbreeding and died out as a result.
