Matti Nykaenen vs Eddie The Eagle Edwards

  • The two stars of Calgary 1988 go head to head. Rumours that Edwards had showered, changed and caught a taxi home before Nykaenen landed prove unfounded. Head to head starts at 1:38.

      davemaclfc41 Nope, you're wrong Dave. Eddie wasn't an embarrassment, he jumped the minimum distance required for qualification for the Calgary 88 Olympics. Of course he wasn't a world class ski jumper but the guy had balls, he never crashed at the Olympics but many others have. Has anyone from the UK even attempted to qualify for the Olympics as a ski jumper since Eddie in 88?! That tells you how difficult the sport is my friend..

    He was such a champ. I most likely watched all of his 46 world cup wins + the Olympic wins, the World Championship wins and World Flying Championship wins live on TV between 1981 and 1989, every single one of them. In some of these events he'd beat the competition by a large margin. And the competition was tough - Bulau and Kogler, then Weissflog, Ploc, Parma and Ulaga, then Felder, Vettori and Opaas, and in the end Thomas, Fidjestol and Nikkola. Definitely the golden age of ski jumping, even though there have been some great champs since those times as well.
    Overall World Cup Winner (4 times), Four Hills Tournament Winner (2 times), Olympic Champion (4 times), World Champion (5 times), and Ski Flying World Champion (1 time), + countless 2nd and 3rd places in all types of competitions.
    He was known as the bad boy from early on. He reached for the stars at the age of 18 and the media was constantly on his case. He was besieged and harassed by reporters like no other winter sports athlete of his time. Later, drugs and alcohol did lots of damage, as did failed personal relationships. I always had a feeling he'd die quite young as a result of such a messed up life, but 55 really is a bit too early. RIP and thanks for all the great sporting memories.

    Yeah, credit to Nykaenen for managing that little bit farther. But dude, 71 meters is still a hell of a distance. Especially for a man who's not had much real practice. What a hero, chased his dream and gave it all he'd got. The true Olympic spirit. The pride of Britain. Superb stuff.

    • @billdang3953

      I agree 1,000 per cent. Eddie The Eagle embodies the traditional olympic ideals much more than someone like Lance Armstrong with their megabuck training budgets and PEDs or certain eastern bloc countries with their state sponsored PED programs (all to show who is "Superior").

    • @bigmamisvea3318
      @bigmamisvea3318 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed, but in my opinion they are both equally as impressive and idols. Matti was focused more on practice and discipline, but he had just as much passion for it. Eddie focused on his dream and never gave up, that's what makes him great. You can barely compare these two, because they approached their passion very differently. What makes them similar is the love for their sport and that's enough for me to call someone a hero.

      Eddie said in an interview in 1988 with Günther Jauch that Matti was a really nice guy. He said that he couldn't speak a lot of english, but he was able to speak some. And Eddie could speak a bit of finnish also. That's how they could communicate, not a lot but well. Eddie said that especially to the other jumpers Matti was always nice but he didn't really like the press and that people took pictures of him. I didn't know him myself, but judging from that I would say he was not arrogant at all.

      I hope he remains in the British consciousness his entire life.
      His story is inspirational, and if he comes around every 4 years , so be it, that would be enough.
      The winner that year Matti Ensio Nykänen, passed away aged just 55, he had a very, very tumultuous life off the circuit.
      Undiagnosed ADHD, until almost the very end of his life, was very, very cruel.
      The discipline of an athlete often draws ADHD sufferers , Johnny Wilkinson, David Beckham to name but only two.
      After giving up one obsession, they immediately require another.
      But the world has just too many temptations, so without any of us knowing this, ( including Matti), the often strick discipline of an athlete is what truly saves themselves from themself, and all the records, medals, and adulation, can, and often are a distraction.
      I wish Eddie happiness
      and
      Matti peace.

    I notice the announcers are pronouncing Nykanen's name more or less correctly. On Canadian TV, they always called him "Nee-kanen".
    Maybe that's just a Calgary thing. Eight years after this, the Calgary Flames drafted defenceman Tony Lydman, who we called "Lid-man" until he was finally traded to the Buffalo Sabres, whereupon all the announcers started calling him "Loodman", which is closer to the way Finnish people would say it. Weird.

    0:03 'Turns glasses upside-down in pubs when he's looking for danger''. In the old days if you turned your glass upside-down at the bar in a pub it meant you already accepted a 'shout' from other people and weren't going to repay the favor. A sure way to get into a knuckle.

    • @LandersWorkshop
      @LandersWorkshop ปีที่แล้ว

      A shout? Is that like a round or something? I figured he meant he was talking about downing shots of liquor in succession and upturning them afterwards?

      Sofia Singleton. They are. In Finland. But it's in Finish. And that means subtitles. And in the USA and UK they are allergic to that. You know, there are good movies made outside Hollywood. You also should know only "American heroes" emerge in American films and only "British heroes" in British films. You'll never see a film about Usain Bolt. You know why?? He's not American. How many Hollywood movies are there about the football/soccer players Pelé and Maradona?
