- BUILDING NEW MILLS MILL No3, FOLIAGE, ROCKS, TRACKWORK & THE MILLENNIUM WALKWAY
A very busy week, and cannot believe how much Ive actually done. So many tiny projects in this video, ranging from more making tree experiments, repairing New Mills track, my first experience of make plaster of paris rocks. Not forgetting the 3d printed Millenium walkway. Enjoy!

Hi John, so much work done, I’ve got no where near that done in a month! Although real life getting in the way a bit.
The walk way is really good, so fiddly but so effective and nicely designed to John.
There’s a lot still to happen with the scene yet which I’m really looking forward to especially the building of the Mill building.
Cheers John, John
Thanks John, I must have had a ‘growth spurt’ last week lol. Added most of the trees now, walls tunnel mouths etc etc. Started the planning for the mill itself now. Might leave the actual build for video two weeks time.
Fantastic.
it will look great when the water is added.
Thank you Chris, just put foliage on to the third section, bit by bit
That is an impressive amount of work completed, especially while you are working during the day. I really like the Millennium Bridge which does look great. Very clever the way you designed the various parts to create the whole thing. Interesting looking at the lichen to use as trees. Maybe something else to get at Warley. Stephen
Thank you Stephen, much appreciated, not sure why I had this burst of energy, but glad it’s moved the mill unit on somewhat. My local model shop was selling the litchen for around £3-4ish so I got 4 bags
Hi John as Bruce used to say, didn't he do well!! The dreaded millennium walkway, you either love it or hate it. I remember it being put in and it was a 50/50 thing at the time. How a bit of green enhances the scene, mind you I'm glad you hadn't had a drink when you said the it had all been flocked lol. Are you at Warley on the Saturday as that's the day I'm planning to go, would be great to meet at last atb Andy
Thanks Andy, I am surprised that people didng like the walkway, I think its lovely and allows access to a gorgeous part of the world especialy the river and the weir. I am glad the walkway is made now it was a but of a nightmare in N gauge, lol.
Yes I am at Warley on Saturday 25th be brilliant to meet after knowing you for so long. Think there will be a different group of youtubers from GETS, be fantastic to meet so many more people.
Is that 185 that you are doing done yet 👍
Ha ha ha, no, wot you like? It'll be the 323s first. They'll be done next year. My aim is to complete the mill scene by Christmas, if possible. No promises though.
That walk way was just amazing - what a feat of modelling! It just suits the scene so well. LOve the trees and lichen scenery on the hill, and its going to look awesome when the buildings and river are all in and completed. ^5 to you.
Regards
Steve
Bless you Steve thank you. I was beginning to wonder if the walkway was going to work. The superglue wouldn’t stick, but then stick to my fingers asaarrrrggggggghhhh. Lol
Millennium bridge looks amazing John nice work, amazing how much work you have done and have a job amazing 👍
Thanks Deano, I didnt feel as tired in the evenings as I have done recently, and besides slapping a bit of foliage was quite an exciting part of the build. Just put foliage on the large section tonight. Massive transformation again.
John where do you get the time to do all this work! Blimey I'm knackered after work and if I get an hour I'm doing well ! Looking really good - you've really captured that sense of a woodland / overgrown unkempt sort of a scene. You need to slow down as your showing how much of a slow coach I am in my bit of rebuilding 😅 cheers Euan
Lol, wot you like ay? Our situations are very different, I dont have anyone to answer to, and best of all. No jobs list to complete each week. I havent felt as tired myself this week. Kids normally wear me out but wierdly different this past week. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
Hi John, must have been half term!! Wow..that’s a lot of very nice work achieved in a short space..👏🏻👏🏻.. Looks fantastic as always and I love the way you just keep reviving areas to make vast improvements.. All the best, Chris
Thank you Chris, it wasn’t half term lol, I guess I just had a mad moment ha ha. I would like to try and get this mill scene complete by Christmas.
The last unit has been foliaged now, and am currently fitting walls and details needed for the mill scene. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment,
Dear John, cool progress on the Mill section and its surroundings. Was wondering where the tracks from New Mills went beyond the tunnel mouth. Never realized these tracks were/are a stub end. Love the idea though. Gives a wonderful opportunity to enhance the perspective beyond the backdrop and to tell the tale of the world on the other side. Of the ‘dark end’ of the tunnel, pun intended! Anyhow, the entire configuration of the hillsides and their foliage starts to make more and sense. Definitely like the idea of the different scenic sections, so you will always be able to reach the tracks underneath! Looking forward to your next episodes! Cheerio
Thanks Vincent. Yes the tracks from New Mills stop in the tunnel. I just don’t have the space sadly. I’ve experimented over the years, including a two lane fiddle yard in the tunnel, complete with a lamp inside, but trains kept stalling so it had to go. I won’t run trains up there very often, only to give illusion they gone to or have come from Sheffield.
I’m so glad I’ve to lift out sections, needed to rescue two trains just today.
wonderful update😁, you dont hang about sir😁👍 i have been debating with my railways mr big (me) about where to glue five people on one of my platforms for over a week🤣🤣, your enthusiasm and passion and talent is priceless sir, thankyou so much💯👍👍👍
Lol, oh dear, people just get plonked anywhere, think Id get your partner to say, ha ha. Being serious thank you for your kind words. If possible I would like the whole mill scene comple by Christmas.
Nice work as always John. But I have to say I am really disappointed that you're not even going to attempt to finish the railings properly! lol 😆
Lol, I wondered who would say that... watching you now! Lol
The two holes are linked.and are the input tunnel above the weir and the outlet tunnel is below. This is the tunnel which went under the mill and was for powering the waterwheel which use to be installed.
Hi, thank you. I thought it probably was for a waterwheel, but having never been there its sometimes hard to say.
The millennium walkway is a great idea. it looks great 🙂👍
Thank you, the whole scene is strongly based on the Torr Vale. Whilst it’s not a scale model, I do want the main features to be present. Thank you for taking time to comment.
I could never plan this, but you make it all work so well together, and it looks amazing.
Thank you. I think the secret is to do one thing at a time. I try not to think too far ahead. Hoping that’s helpful.
John, very good work with the trees and walkway. Regards, Stephen.
Thx Stephen, just having fun. Almost ready for the mill itself now.
Great progress John. Once you get the bit between your teeth you don’t let go do you. Well done. Roy.
Ansolutely, I have to take advantage of time when I have it. You never know whats around the corner.
Awesome John!!! Well build! Cheers Onno.
Thanks Onno, much appreciated
The Tunnel on the left we would gone into it in the late 70s entering from the Hayfield end
Yes exactly, now disused.
Stunning walk way John. Sticky fingers .mmmmmmmmmmm
Lol, thanks Allan it was fun to do, constantly washing my hands...
Love the walk way. I have been on some wobbley walks myself. I think your rocks are "smashing". When I had a model railway 50 years ago, I used lichen and alder twigs for my HO scale trees. One problem I had with the lichen was after a few years it dried out and got brittled. Lichen came in a box with clear acetate lid. I used that for windows for my buildings. No such thing as wasted materials. Bill from Califoenia
John, in a mad world. moments of peace and interest are worth millions. Well done John you are one in a million!!!
lol, think that’s a compliment… thx err I think lol
