just picked up a refurb mini 2012 ... my 5th mac mini....love them ... right back to the g4 first one! elegant small and really more than fast enough for my limited needs
Got mine last year and so far I'm not disappointed. I switched from a PC running Win 7 to the MAC. I just got sick of the crashes and the vulnerability to viruses. Don't get me wrong Win 7 is the most stable OS Microsoft has ever put out and that's counting Win 8 but since having the Mac for over a year now I can say I've only had 2 crashes (and they hardly count as crashes to be honest) and ZERO viruses. There is a small learning curve but it's awesome and it was the right choice for me

yes it works with any monitor and tvs (because it has a thunder bolt and hdmi port, you could hook up both at the same time) it also works with any usb mouse and keyboard. It also works with bluetooth mice and keyboards... And it relatively cheap for an apple product at 588$ on amazon

They look beautiful with a home theater system. However, I do wish they still carried the optical drive. I use my 2010 mac mini to play cd's and rip to lossless formats, which I listen to on high end audio speakers with a external hard drive.

yes you can run blu rays. I got a lg slim portable blu ray player and I use the mac blu ray player software to run blu rays. It plays them no sweat. I even still have mine at 4 gb of ram. It is a payed program like about 40 or so but its worth it.

One of my friends has a 13" MacBook pro (Ivy Bridge), and it can power through most of the above mentioned at 2nd highest and sometimes highest settings.

Look into the Apple TV too, it's great for delivering presentations with Keynote for example, or showing what you're doing on your screen with AirPlay (and you can get software for Windows and older unsupported Macs to enable this too, called Air Parrot).

Do you think the top end Mac Mini with basic specs would work just fine without video editing lag, or should I empty my bank and get an iMac?
It depends. If you are a pro photo/movie editor... iMac is better. If you are a normal user who just wants to get things done, or watch movies (use it as your home theatre) on... MacMini is for you.

It doesn't seem right then, my mac mini '12 got extremely hot that my hand couldn't bear it when processing final cut pro or playing rollercoaster tycoon 3... I checked the web and found out many ppl have this problem with 12 model too, but not so many with 11. Wondering if apple would exchange mine just because it gets really hot.
not really, it's very very good pricing for the performance, and all those other things are optional i'm sure you can use a wired keyboard and mouse with the USB ports but although it is quite a bit of money its good value :)

This is actually a great product. For something this small, intuitive, and very well designed using premium materials such as aluminum I don't see why people would ever get a Dell, HP, etc. desktop over this. Those desktops are clunky, big, and still cost the same. Unless you're into a expandability I don't see why you wouldn't get this.

the ports are both 3.0 and 2.0. you can either plug in a 2.0 device or 3.0 device.

Yes.. a DVI(HDMI to DVI adaptor included) monitor and a VGA(you have to buy a adaptor) monitor.

Get them from Amazon. You'll get a CD and an MP3 version. No need for an optical drive at all then!
If you have a Thunderbolt equipped iMac you should get the option to use it as a monitor.
