    Can't believe ppl are so hung up about your accent. Just keep being yourself 😊 I'm Australian, and find it fascinating that the UK has so many accents in such a small area. Our accent is broadly uniform, yet we're spread over a huge continent.

      Come on.., it's not always about accents. I come from non English Speaking Countries so that I need to acknowledge the sounds you guys produce to understand the whole meaning of the sentences and accents is one of the most important thing of conversations. 😌

      Accent separation tracks patterns of settlement...that is why in the U.S. accent variation is far more pronounced on the east coast where people have settled longer....as you go west accents become more standard....this is true in Canada as well as you will find out if you ever visit a place like Newfoundland...there is a sort of prairie twang to the west but it is not nearly as pronounced as the difference between people in Newfoundland or Nova Scotia and people in the rest of the country...at least to my ears. So I assume this is the reason Australian or NZ accents are comparatively homogeneous.

    My fiance was born and raised in North Yorkshire, and I can affirm that the listening practice is a really great thing. When we first met, and when he speaks to other people from the United States, he spoke/speaks in a more RP accent that is easier for people to understand. Now that we've been together for so long he speaks in his natural accent with me because I have no trouble at all understanding what he's saying. My English accent, sentence phrasing, and slang have also improved greatly. His "Alabama" accent is spot on now, too. lol

    For what it is worth, especially so long after you released this video.....
    I'm American-born and bred, and speak with a "Utah" or "North Intermountain" accent which is considered a very neutral American accent. I'm following you because I'm trying to learn the various British accents so I can use them for when I read/record stories that have characters from the British Isles. (Yes, I'm trying to do the same with Ireland, Scotland, and Wales as well as other countries too). So I've *loved* your videos detailing the regional accents, and have really enjoyed a few others you've published as well (I only found you today, lol). Thank you!!!
    *If* you have time and interest, could you please answer a question? Because I'm in the States but have several friends and contacts in Europe, I've learned that there are particular phrases or words that a traveler should never use there in England but which are common and even encouraged to be used instead of swear words elsewhere. Do you know of a way to find such details out? I'd really like to not offend anyone there, and while folks are generally very forgiving and tolerant I've noticed at times that it makes a difference (especially for me, because I'm researching folklore which can already have people feeling a bit stressed without realizing it).

    I'm amazed at how many English learners still do not accept the existence of different accents and insist on thinking that RP is the only correct one! In my country it was once said that Florentine was the only correct Italian accent (which is not), but the truth is that in every single town the accent changes: so, which is the "perfect" Italian? It doesnt exist or it does only in books. Same with English! What is important instead, is to speak without making any mistakes (grammar rules and vocabulary). I was taught strict RP English for years and yea4s, by the way, and then I went to the US and... everything changed, ahah ahahah! Thank you so much for your interest8ng videos!

    My impression is that you're very close to standard English and could be known as "teachers' accent". It's super clear and easy to understand. I agree it's more important to make it real English instead of looking for an exemplary like the Queen's English. I'd prefer you go even more natural at a pace like you're talking to other Brits. This is the best way to train our listening skills.

    How do "normal Brits" react when they hear people from abroad trying to speak with a British accent? I put some effort into improving my pronunciation and making my sounds more understandable, and basically RP was a standard, for me. Would anyone react negatively, would they feel offended like I try to mock them?

    • @astrius4125
      @astrius4125 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I keep wondering that myself. Usually I recieve good feedback, yet I keep fearing I'll come across as someone who is trying to mock them or something.
      When I hear someone in my native language who can do a good accent I'm always pleasantly surprised, so I can expect it is the same for brits.
      Maybe this is the reason why many people are bad at pronunciation? Because they're afraid it'll sound overdone and it'll be misunderstood so they don't even try.

    • @marcelbpunkt

      I'm German and I've always hated English with a German accent so at some point I practised a lot to sound English. I seem to have done a very good job because when I moved to Hinckley/Leicestershire, noone thought I was German. Most people guessed I was South African for some reason 🤷‍♂️
      Anyway, as soon as I told them I was German they were really surprised and complimented me a lot on how English I sounded. I also took on quite a lot of the Leicester accent until I moved back to Germany a few months later. Now I guess my accent is pretty much all over the place.

    • @alicemilne1444
      @alicemilne1444 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am a normal Brit. I am also from Scotland. As a professional interpreter I have been listening to people from all over the world speaking English in thousands of different accents, native and non-native. There are hundreds of different British accents. Linguistically, RP is a mainly English accent. It is based on the accents of wealthy people from the southeast of England. You will not find many people even in England who speak RP, despite it being taught to foreigners as a "standard British accent". The further away from southeast England you go, the less you will hear it.
      I personally think it far too difficult for the majority of non-native speakers because it has about 20 different vowel sounds and involves dropping syllables in unpredictable places. I personally don't think it worth the effort. To me, all that matters is clear articulation.
