However, my *guess* is that he objects to hymns in which God/Christ is the speaker, rather than the Person being addressed or discussed. Most of this hymn is written in that manner. I have seen that objection raised by others in connection to either this hymn or some other hymn in which God/Christ is speaking in the first person, e.g., perhaps David Haas's "You Are Mine" or Sydney Carter's "Lord of the Dance." The use of the first person in this particular manner is, so far as I know, a recent innovation in traditional hymnody. So that's my guess. This song makes me fall back into Jesus' arms, knowing that it is only He who can satisfy me like no other and no human being can ever love me and satisfy my needs the way He does. A great reminder that at the end of the day, in every circumstance, He will raise me up. His body, blood and water is what nourished my soul. There has also been a military coup in Turkey, so many prayers will be needed for these awful events.

***** Do you think Scripture is to be read in isolated, unconnected bits and pieces? Don't you think that later passages clarify earlier ones? More importantly: Do you realize this passage is the only one that says His disciples left Him? The only ones who remained with Him were the Twelve. Read the Gospels again, look for the times Jesus clarified misunderstandings by using a different comparison, different figures of speech. He doesn't do that here. In this passage, He continues to reinforce what He said by using even more forceful descriptions of what we must do. That's why His disciples couldn't take it any more -- they, like you, couldn't wrap their heads around eating His flesh and drinking His blood.

You're obviously prejudiced against tradition, but the interpretation you give is a tradition (taught, or handed down by a previous generation)... unless you've come up with an original interpretation all on your own.
Lynn Constable carm is an unreliable source -- they make unsupported, truly bigoted claims about religions they don't like...not just my own Faith, but other religions that I believe are in error. That's important because if there are errors in a religion, then those errors must be pointed out with truth, not (as carm does) with lies piled onto the truth, or sometimes, lies piled onto misreasoned descriptions of the error. There are much better sources for translations of the original languages of Scripture, not necessarily religious-based ones that distort things to present a biased interpretation (like carm does).
We sang this in my Episcopal church this past Sunday after communion and it was so spiritually moving that tears did flow! Thank you LORD Jesus!

~~~Notes: * [6:54-58] "Eats": the verb used in these verses is not the classical Greek verb used of human eating, but that of animal eating: “munch,” “gnaw.” This may be part of John’s emphasis on the reality of the flesh and blood of Jesus (cf. Jn 6:55)...
The following verses recount how many of his disciples left him because they could not accept the commandment to eat his flesh and drink his blood. They understood that he was not speaking figuratively. They believed he sincerely meant that his followers would literally have to eat his flesh and drink his blood in order to have eternal life. More importantly, he did not correct their understanding. In the Gospels, when his disciples misunderstand his teaching, Jesus corrects them. If he does not correct them, it means he knows they understand. They are always free to leave him if they don't like his teaching, but he never bends the truth to please his listeners.~~~

He was referring to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot; it was he who would betray him, one of the Twelve.
***** Do you think Scripture is to be read in isolated, unconnected bits and pieces? Don't you think that later passages clarify earlier ones? More importantly: Do you realize this passage is the only one that says His disciples left Him? The only ones who remained with Him were the Twelve. Read the Gospels again, look for the times Jesus clarified misunderstandings by using a different comparison, different figures of speech. He doesn't do that here. In this passage, He continues to reinforce what He said by using even more forceful descriptions of what we must do. That's why His disciples couldn't take it any more -- they, like you, couldn't wrap their heads around eating His flesh and drinking His blood.

***** There's no meaning being "read into" the text -- the text is literal. I explained how John defined it. You're obviously prejudiced against tradition, but the interpretation you give is a tradition (taught, or handed down by a previous generation)... unless you've come up with an original interpretation all on your own.
Lynn Constable carm is an unreliable source -- they make unsupported, truly bigoted claims about religions they don't like...not just my own Faith, but other religions that I believe are in error. That's important because if there are errors in a religion, then those errors must be pointed out with truth, not (as carm does) with lies piled onto the truth, or sometimes, lies piled onto misreasoned descriptions of the error. There are much better sources for translations of the original languages of Scripture, not necessarily religious-based ones that distort things to present a biased interpretation (like carm does).
