I remember the days of Class 33/1s and Mk 1 carriages so good that we’ve come further in comfort since those days. I have two funny stories with Mum and Dad travelling on Class 158s, one involving the Salisbury service getting cancelled due to the driver not having had a lunch break and another time when they missed their stop and had to get off at the end of the line at Lymington Pier when travelling the Brockenhurst to Lymington route. Great times and enjoyable journeys 😁

Great video and review 👍 as you say those units are a little dated now but have served the railways extremely well. Loved the announcement from the guard! 😃

The locals call this service the "Romsey Rocket" a lot of them use it (my daughter included) to commute between Eastleigh and Southampton due to the poor calling pattern at Eastleigh

Didn't know that, thanks for the info. What's the poor calling pattern?

@@danielstripreports Only the stopper from Waterloo that splits at Eastleigh (Pompey/Poole), the Romsey-Southampton that you did and occasional others. The fatss and semis do Parkway and Winchester.

What I’d say on the seats is that the legroom is variable - genuinely some have more than others which is a bit strange. Find one with more legroom and they are pure luxury there’s 2 or 3 pairs per coach which have loads of space, I usually try and get those. With the trays I guess as they are original to the seats, when the units were built they weren’t considering laptops… just cups of tea etc. I think they’ve withstood the test of time quite well - I think 10 years from now they’ll still be in service.

Bit odd isn't it, I really like the 158s/159s but they are showing their age a bit, I find their standard class to be a bit disappointing with little to no space between your leg and the table/ tray table bit odd

@@danielstripreports for me the seat comfort overrides the other issues - I’d pick a 158/ 159 seat over an ironing board seat any day of the week!

Same, but I do prefer the 444 seats over the 158/159

@@danielstripreports I’m ok with either to be honest

I’ve been to Salisbury on the train from London Waterloo and Salisbury is a nice city but not a county town of Wiltshire. As Trowbridge is the county town of Wiltshire.
