- This episode features a very rare machine, the Caterpillar 6020B Hydraulic Mining Shovel (Better known as “Thicc Boy” and the older brother of the 6015B). Reading Anthracite used this machine to open up the cut and strip away all the dirt, muck, and mud to expose the rock for drilling so that the draglines and other machines could come in and mine the coal.

Do you call it a Hydraulic Mining Shovel or an Excavator?
Its an Excavator. A Shovel's bucket is turned opposite and digs from bottom up. Although, Cat has decided to mis-pronounce them too.
As long as it digs like a standard excavator I'd call it an excavator, however if the bucket is front-facing and it scoops upward to load material that's what I would typically call a shovel.
It’s an excavator now from time to time I will flip my bucket around and use it as a shovel.

The 6020 really isn’t the “bigger brother” of the 6015. The 6020 is Cats smallest true Mining Excavator. The 6020 is 2/3 larger in scale, mass and capacities (breakout, production turns/pass match at 100 ton trucks) so although close in numeric description, they are Vastly different machines.

We have 40 side dumps and when I start a new cut it tests your patients. It’s one thing to loading the same 5 off road trucks but when you have 30-40 different drivers it takes a lot of just stopping for a second and taking a deep breath.
That's quite a pace, like bam bam bam one after the other! I think my next career move is gonna be loading trucks with some sort of machine. I like the repetitive nature of the work.

Why are there really big machines always so slow? Is it because of their sheer size or are the operators just trying to be careful?
It’s their size. A lot more weight to move around but you’re also moving a lot more material

That a damn lie 6015b with a custom big bucket the 6015b match up perfect with the Cat 777 truck on mega machine channel the 6015b in Sweden full up Cat 777 with four pass because they have a 15 yard bucket them the 10 yard bucket from Cat that come with the machine when you buy it that a hella different size and fast full up
There is only few in USA because your country is in serious debt, in fact the worst in the universe, but here in Canada we have a lot …
Thanks for the vid. These big excavators are to big. To slow and heavy. I can set up better with a smaller machine and get as good production. Been moving material for over 35 years and oversized excavators are awful. They lose a ton of time resetting themselves. Lots wrong with your whole setup. I’d also never buy a new machine that sound like the hydraulic pumps sound like they are about to grenade themselves. Sorry to be so critical, just truth.
Seems like it has too narrow of tracks for how massive it is. Does it ever get stuck in mud?
