I know this might be a little to late to recommend but there actually is a rom hack called Newer Super Mario Bros Wii. Which looks really well made with interesting bosses and level. As well as a retiring power up.
The Toads have names, but they aren't 100% official, the development team give them nicknames, but they aren't set on stone. Blue toad is *Bucken-Berry* Yellow Toad is *Ala-Gold*
One of the punishments for rivals should be: made to look like the winner. For example, Choc loses to Vern, spray his hair pink. Vern loses to Choc, he has to babysit until he looks tired beyond belief. Etc, etc
And thus close the story of this crazy adventure and it's now over.....or is it?? Might be late to recommend this but Wii Sports Resort would be a good came for multiplayer!
