    I do this exact trick with the same wind screen and it’s hilarious how good the vocals sound. No more need for the SM7, but I’ll still pick one up eventually because it’s my favorite mic for my whisper to scream style vocal range

    It maybe even sounds better and more deep and tight, but it could also be his voice changing while in between takes. And the distance to the mic makes a difference.

    Isn’t this pretty much exactly what Caleb Pike was all about in his video? Getting them to sound as close as possible? Just with more diy components?
    Seems to counter your previous statement about how “you cant get the sm58 to sound like the sm7b” but I guess “sound like” is a very broad statement anyway. They already sound “similar” right out of the box and the frequency response you show supports that.
    Sounding identical is of course not in the cards, as you say. But also, two different sm7bs may not sound “identical” either, as Jim Lill tested and demonstrated recently.

    "This cheap mic?" I hope that was tongue-in-cheek

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio  ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Affordable maybe? They’re definitely not expensive is the scheme of things. Mics get wayyyyy more expensive.
      They don’t sound cheap. They’re a great mic found in every world class studio.

      @@diyrecordingstudio Yeah, I mean "cheap" in quality, and that is VERY debatable, would be something like the Behringer XM8500, on the LOW end of Shure's line or one of those Pyle knock-off of this mic which all go from between $20 - $40. For $100, and being used for decades, I'd say it is mid-level price range and, for how old it is, that is impressive especially the amazing quality and versatility it delivers; with the windscreen hack, bam, you have almost top tier stuff. Although, even at that price, it is still hefty on the wallet depending on where you are at financially and the proper Shure windscreen can set you back around $40, too.

      @@Undefined9 In non-US English, 'cheap' doesn't quite have the same negative connotations. It is closer to 'inexpensive'.

    Hi,
    i want to record acoustic guitar using this mic on scarlett solo. which cable should i use for this mic? "XLR to TS" or "XLR to TRS". as one input would be occupied by Vocal mic on Scarlett solo. only 6.35 jack input would be vacant.

    • @al.e.x1230
      @al.e.x1230 ปีที่แล้ว

      if using balance line must have balance connector either side so if xlr go to trs or other way around and trs to trs or trs to ts ts or etc

      Great question. Depends on the vocal. For this, mid cut, low boost. but thats for my voice, might be entirely different on someone else!

    The 58 is closer. Give it up bro, you're still mad that a camera man made a cheaper sm7b while you paid full price.

    • @Durkhead
      @Durkhead ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @diyrecordingstudio I don't think so the sm58 just has more gain and less of a mid scoop

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      And the 57 has a higher frequency extension…… and an earlier low roll off…. That is more linear…. And a high mid boost.
      Seems like a lot of differences to me.
