  • This video starts at the proper Abingdon Street Market which is being refurbished. Walk through town to the temporary site. It's All Move for the Abingdon Street Market Stallholders when the existing Coronation Street shop arrangements run out in a few months. We've been in to take a look and have a chat to some of the traders.

One sentence in the commentry stood out for me Jane; "I like markets like this". I have been in three areas where the local town has ousted the comfortable community of stallholders out of the indoor market, changed the market hall or built a new one and the stallholders cannot afford the new rents and rules for how the stalls should operate. The gentrification removes what creates your love of a community indoor market.
Therefore this raises a relevant question. A shop must cost more to rent than a market stall in a conventional indoor market so if the stall holders can afford that why not let them stay as they are and charge rent between what they pay now and what a shop rent would be?
Councils dislike traditional indoor community markets and the stallholders always get a raw deal sadly.

The market below Woolies was my go to for presents when visiting Blackpool. My parents loved it as well. I don't like modern markets give me an old fashioned one any day., 🤨

I have been to Abington market for years and it did need a clean up but for the council to buy it and kick the marketer out is discussing, yes they can go into the update market at a higher premium and it will be so modern the council has lost the plot🤔

Can you do a video about the graveyard that was moved from the church in blackpool as it was paved over for pedestrians, there was a fishtail coffin found and theres rumour that the council did not move all of the graves as they found coffins when installing a feature by the church

I don't believe the bodies were moved just the headstones. Many bodies would have decayed over time.

Hi Jane!! Sadly I don't think we shall see the old fashioned market halls of our generation for very much longer. I guess its just supposedly called progress!! Out of curiosity ,where was your nearest and Chrissies whilst growing up in Yorkshire?? Mine was Oldham, because I'm from there, but Bury was and still is thriving! Get better soon!!😊

Yes, they were born of an era before Home Bargains and co. Ours was Barnsley market - huge compared to all the ones around here. Doncaster was really good too.
