Wow! Laura Coyle is such a great instructor! I need a quick dive into learning Illustrator for iPad. Laura gets right to the point. Outstanding delivery.
That's a good question!! My current case doesn't have anything that secures the Pencil. Let me know if you find something good :-) Thanks, so glad you like the tutorials!
Excellent iPad tutorials. Have you thought of doing a drawing class, with Illustrator on iPad as the main tool? I think that would be amazing. You could teach the basics of cartooning, with shadows, highlights and coloring; and then you could add in perspective training -- all while teaching the technical tricks of Illustrator on the iPad.
is it possible to make one layer show in keyline view and other layers show in preview mode like the desktop version? this is a staple in tracing workflows...
I see what you mean! But I just tried and wasn't able to make that happen - that would be a good feature request for Adobe. They just added a transparency grid to the view, so they are adding things all the time.
I don't think template layers are available on the iPad, only on the desktop. Try unlocking the layer, selecting the photo, and looking in the properties panel - you may find some options there, like transparency, that you can change.
I'm not sure if this is what you are asking, but the iPad version of Illustrator does not have template layers. You can create the same thing by changing the opacity of the image or art and locking it on its own layer. Opacity settings are in the Properties panel.
What are the best ways of going between illustrator draw on Ipad and adobe fresco? I'd love to learn how to use the best of both of them. Could you do a video on that? I'm writing a graphic memoir and I'm using photos a lot for my mother and me and I draw the other characters. Trying to decide which program to use for the drawing has been a struggle for me.
Good question! I don't use Illustrator Draw, so I won't be able to help with that. Fresco has vector brushes though, so that might be a good app to use. It does a nice job of exporting to Illustrator on the desktop. I have also moved between Fresco and Illustrator on the iPad using CC Libraries and Capture. Hopefully everything will streamline more in the future as these apps evolve!
@@LauraCoyle I mispoke. Your video was about illustrator on the Ipad. I forgot there was illustrator and then illustrator Draw. That's what I meant. Illustrator on the ipad, not draw. Jeez, why do they have to have so much? LOL
@@kaylenedawnbuteaufitnessbu2282 Ok! Yes, there are a lot of apps - sigh. And yes, working between Illustrator on the iPad and Fresco is one of my future topics for sure.
Unfortunately, the iPad does not have the "paste remembers layers" option, like on the desktop version. The best you can do on the iPad is group the contents of a layer before copy-pasting to a new doc, then dragging each group to individual layers and ungrouping. Upvote the feature request here: illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/931888-illustrator-ipad-feature-requests/suggestions/42943323-moving-vectors-between-illustrator-ipad-docs
I'm not seeing that as an option on the iPad version, like "Flatten Artwork" on the desktop layers panel. It may come later. For now you can select the layers you want to merge (hold touch shortcut to add layers to your selection) and group the selected art using the common actions menu. This puts all selected art in a group on the uppermost layer you selected and you can ungroup it from there.
Hey!.. Laura Just like these shapes I want to keep one Horizontally and keep the Cube shape in the middle in the Front. It's smaller the triangular.. And half of the cube is Behind it. Want to Bring it to front. What can I Do... Using my Laptop.. Not Tab.. And Suggest me something I can do and earn easy money online to support my family financially as a Physically disabled Person . I am In practice with illustrator and know little Typing and that's all .Arrange Shortcut commands and Right click methods not working. And want to keep my Starboard half Green. I did but it made my all artworks green.. What to do? Reply soon.
Under the Pencil tool there's the Blob Brush and it's options - but that's all for brushes. Hopefully they will add more brushes like Illustrator on the desktop in the future.
Hi Laura, Laura here 😂 Are you able to tell me how do you flatten layers? I need to flatten my resume it’s 115MB 😅 I appreciate everyone who is making iPad content. It is helpful!
I don't think there is a flattening command like on the desktop version, you would do this manually by dragging in the layers panel (or take it to the desktop version). But, it sounds like you want to make your file smaller - that's big for an Illustrator document! You can always export it as a png, which has no layers. You could export as a PDF and in Adobe Acrobat choose File > Save As > Reduced Size PDF. Hope that helps!
Illustrator uses groups instead of "layer groups" - so think groups of objects for Illustrator rather than groups of layers (like photoshop). Part 2 shows you how it works. th-cam.com/video/V_PcBzjWy6E/w-d-xo.html
You solved the problem that was driving me crazy - moving a specific object to a new layer. Thank you!
I'm so glad it helped!

So glad you like them!
Love that winter/rainbow/Godzilla illustrator
Thanks!!
You are the best! I was going crazy looking for this information. Thank you!!!
Glad I could help!
Omg thank you 😂 I was trying to stack layers by dragging- now I know it’s within layers to stack by dragging.
Happy to help!
This will be an irrelevant question but can you recommend a cover for iPad pro that I won't loose my Apple Pencil? I enjoy your tutorials very much.

The stacking order referring to the bring to front , send to back in the desktop version of AI ?
Yes, on the desktop Object > Arrange > bring to front, send to back changes the stacking order of objects within the layer.
Thanks, this has so helpful specially the renaming of the layer on minute 4;05
Great to hear!
Could you do a video on how to cut shapes in illustrator for iPad ?
Yes, I want to do this, great suggestion.
How do you view template options for the layers, I need to uncheck a photo template

Sorry it's difficult for me to understand the issue. As for easy money, I wish I had an answer for that. Best of luck to you!
