The creator got the idea from his real life because he was having an affair with someone from the show and he liked having Hilarie and Sophia pitted against each other and he also liked having Leyton suffer but if you listen to Lucas's voiceover at the end of season 1 episode 1 it foreshadowed that there was going to be an affair and in season 1 episode 15 when Leyton broke up Lucas's voice over said on the tip of my tongue, I promise forever, but the words go unsung, as I sink into denial; we plot our future with a map to the stars.'' and then her hidden feelings sort of came out while hanging out with Lucas during the summer and she didn't know that those feelings she had for Lucas were still there until she went to see Jake in Savannah and he told her to go back home to figure out her unresolved feelings so she went back confused and she didn't know that she still had feelings for Lucas until the naley play when they showed all the Leyton flashbacks.

You are totally right. I was so hooked i completed 4 seasons in a week. And i totally love brucas. They're meant to be together. S5 onwards was total crap.
1)Lucas and Brooke no longer has feelings for each other, maybe a bit but it's no longer interesting like the love triangle S1-4 (LUCAS,BROOKE,PEYTON)
2) New characters are brought into the show. Uneccessary move.
3) Main characters left.
4) IM SAYING THIS AGAIN: LUCAS AND BROOKE BELONG TOGETHER.
