The only thing very unusual about this was its visibility and the Internet. It's certainly not novel. MANY people in the past have written books after engaging in extremely similar escapades. Dozens, if not hundreds, of Americans travelled to Spain with little to no military training to fight in the Spanish Civil War, for instance. Some people are willing to place their own wellbeing in jeopardy in order to have a life which consists of fighting for a "glorious cause" (whatever that may be) instead of just fighting to pay their next credit card bill. Hell, what about the people who went on the original Crusades? They just up and left their farms and homes and went out to capture lands they'd never seen before. While certainly unthinkable to most people, I don't see Caro as necessarily entirely mentally ill. Or at least not in a manner that is historically unique.
The whole time I was watching this I though he sounded very similar to other crazy military people in history. I think war is just where some people belong, I guess.
I mean he has lived a life worth knowing about, his story is worth hearing. And thats much more then most people could say. I admire that, insane or not.
This reminds me of the backstory of the Soldier from Team Fortress 2. In the comics, he was denied admission to every branch of the US military when he tried to enlist during WWII. He simply flew to Germany himself and killed a bunch of Nazis anyway (as well as innocent German civilians)

It's both amazing and horrifying just how much he's done. Arrogance has truly given him something that few ever can hope to achieve, but it is terrifying that he assumed that knowledge accumulated through the internet can equate to actual experience. Especially with things like medical expertise and combat. It must have helped him in some way, but it's one thing to put your own life in danger, another thing entirely to drag other people into it. The most I can hope is that he was humbled, I'm amazed that he survived it all, and I do hope he gets the help he seeks. At the same time, lunatics like him are what gives the people of the internet something to talk about.
He thought nothing of risking the lives of the people he "treated" in the medic tent. He also killed people, not caring whose side they were on. He deserved everything he got. Frankly, he kind of deserved worse.
Ah man, I remember this guy! He was fucking nuts, I never talked to him myself but he was kind of a legend on the somethingawful forums. His whole situation was so surreal to me!

I love that you cover so many different topics than anyone else that does these types of videos. I love the way you present these stories and your voice is so soothing!
It’s absolutely astonishing what a little bit of gumption, and a splash (large) of schizophrenia aided mania can get you. It’s almost impressive that Caro was so unwaveringly confident in his conviction that he *might* have successfully used TH-cam tutorials to aid injured combatants in a war zone. While his skills were of dubious competence, they were probably still better than those of his compatriots, who were no doubt civilians that took up arms just like Caro. I don’t want it to sound like I’m condoning his actions, as I think it’s pretty clear Mr. Dawes reasons and intent were fairly selfish and possibly even murderous. However, how many of us can say we’ve seen the side of life devoid of personal limitation in the pursuit of an ultimate goal? I think there’s a lesson in Caro, aside from the obvious, highlighted by the repercussions he faced, and it’s this: to Hell with what other people think 🤔, and self doubt be damned, go get what you want out of the fucking marrow of life. Seize it by it’s throat and don’t let go. Life is a vicious and nasty fight with time to attain the things you desire most. Carpe diem, unironically... carpe fucking diem.
Huh I vaguely remember hearing about this guy in the news after he was released in 2016 but I had no idea the story went this deep! Love your videos and please keep up the good work!
There's some recent development on this story: "Washington, DC, January 2, 2024 - Miller & Chevalier Chartered has secured a judgment of nearly $50 million against the Syrian government on behalf of Kevin Dawes, an American citizen who was kidnapped, imprisoned, and tortured for nearly four years by the Syrian government. " There's also a 2021 interview with him for NPR: "An American was locked up in Syria. A pact with a British inmate may have saved him"

Gangstalking aside id say otherwise dude was jus born in the wrong era
Ernest Hemingway is one of the better-known examples of a freelance journo/warfighter.
@Hotsam Noirchards oh and the American civil war wasnt about slavery right?
I mean he has lived a life worth knowing about, his story is worth hearing. And thats much more then most people could say. I admire that, insane or not.
"They called me a mad man"
More like a Iron Man.
This reminds me of the backstory of the Soldier from Team Fortress 2.
In the comics, he was denied admission to every branch of the US military when he tried to enlist during WWII. He simply flew to Germany himself and killed a bunch of Nazis anyway (as well as innocent German civilians)
I was literally about to comment the exact same thing lol
Life imitating art, I suppose
Man actually did what he said.
Can’t believe you don’t have more subscribers; you make such informative videos and you can tell that you actually work hard and do a lot of research. I always get super excited when I see you upload, keep up the great work 😁
Thank you so much! :)
I love this Channel. I almost wish I got to it late so I could watch a 200 video backlog. But Im glad to be here now with all the cool and weird stories. I like the fact that the editing is not overbaked and the comitation explains what we might be seeing. Thus I can just listen while at work without watching each video is worth watching ay least twice and I hope you can keep up the good work and get paid for doing this just as you do. Non of my channels ever took off and I know how hard it is to get recognized by the YTA. Good job.
That's really nice, thank you, Melona! :)
@@AtrocityGuideYour welcome. Also I absolutely love the long form videos. I listen to youtube while working. I like to really learn things or learn of something interesting while plugging away those almost mindless hours. And you have top notch entertainment.
Comitation?
@@SatoshiKong I think they mean commentary? I'm assuming English isn't their first language.
Kevin Dawes in life
SomethingAwful goons: You're insane.
Kevin Dawes believed dead
SomethingAwful goons: He was a hero who died a warrior's death.
Riiight.
I love how he ended up getting accused of being a cia agent himself
Frankly, he kind of deserved worse.
stairs?
cool sneaky alantutorial reference too
I love how you strive to cover stories that are normally not covered by other "creepy" channels. Elisa Lam? Not today!
Thank you, Matteo! :)
Right? I swear to god if I see one more Elisa Lam vid. (Rest in Peace though, Elisa.)
Once again, you cover something I've never heard of. I don't know how you do it.
This channel is a hidden gem, a pleasant, well researched channel with interesting documented stories I’ve never heard of, you rock.
Ah man, I remember this guy! He was fucking nuts, I never talked to him myself but he was kind of a legend on the somethingawful forums. His whole situation was so surreal to me!
"...ending the civil war" Hoo boy is that not right anymore...
Of the 7+ billion people in the world, I am not surprised to find a person as unique as this. In the span of our population, it is interesting to meet unusual people.
Wow, how have I not heard of this before!? Great video, thank you for telling this insane story.
12:30 Hey that's me. Still I feel bad for Caro.
Calling this a saga could not be more accurate!
It is obvious that you do a lot of research for your videos and I really love that you do your best to stay objective while presenting the information, especially with all of the different theories going around regarding Caro’s motives, mental health, etc.
Idk how long this channel had been around, but damn, I'm glad it was recommended recently. I can't get enough of these.
Amazing, just what I needed.
Thank you, Lina!
again u dig the most obscure and interesting topics, thank u so much
Thank you, Enrique!
*how to become a political prisoner*
Soldier: thank you stranger. I’m sad we had to amputate even though it was just a piece of fragmentation, but this happens. Say, why did you wish to become a doctor?
Me: uh... well I’m not technically a doctor...
This was not heroics. Insane bravery, maybe, but not heroics.
Glad to see you back
Glad to be back :)
absolutely love your production of these videos - the eloquence in your storytelling, the music, the soothing voice, just perfect!
he might have been schizophrenic, but if he didn't kill innocent people he wasnt a psycho. or rather he was as much of a psycho as every other soldier
I hate finding channels like this. I devour it all in a single mad binge.
Great content. FEED ME MOOOOOOOOOOORE!!!!!
A perfect way to cap off the day
11:46 That was the BIGGEST sigh of relief I ever took.
i used to date a dude named kevin and he sounds EXACTLY like this
Check in with Kevin, find out if it's him.
@@raksh9 its not, he was a white dude and as far as i know he's still living off the goverment and spending all this money on video games or something equally as depressing
@@wikikomoto Good thing you're not dating him any more. Doesn't sound very healthy.
@@raksh9 FACT
@Qiana Huangsha Oh fuck off and get married to raksh9 you special fuck. You probably have a tally chart.
I was just watching your old videos the other day hoping we'd get a new one soon. Looks like I got my wish granted!
I love how calming your voice is
It's a good contrast to the terrifying stuff you sometimes talk about, it makes it all a bit more approachable
I could listen to this voice all day~ Looking forward to your next addition.
Was about to go sleep its 3am but i just saw the notification and looks like im awake for another 15 minutes :D
I always look forward to these vids
You european?
@@Real-1 Yea British to be exact
@@holo3400 I'm french and the exact same thing happened to me lmao
You find the most craziest stories to report on. I love the topics for all your videos.
It's nice seeing and learning about things I was unaware of. I follow a lot of spooky channels but yours I tend to flock to immediately when you upload, because you're usually covering something nobody else is and I love it. Also your voice is insanely pretty and that always helps.
Thank you! :D
Thank you for the content!
Thank you for creating such a wide selection of detailed videos and stories. You explain these topics so well. I always look forward to each new video, even if the topic wasn't of interest to me before.
Thank you! :)
Hooray! Always so exciting!
I love that you cover so many different topics than anyone else that does these types of videos. I love the way you present these stories and your voice is so soothing!
Thank you, Nathan!
Carpe diem, unironically... carpe fucking diem.
this is truly the best youtube channel. it's honestly as good as twin peaks
I love Twin Peaks. :)
This channel is on the verge of blowing up I can tell.
Dude really learned how to become a medic and a marksman through youtube, and survived after being captured.
Huh I vaguely remember hearing about this guy in the news after he was released in 2016 but I had no idea the story went this deep!
Love your videos and please keep up the good work!
I've kept up with all your uploads and I've heard of almost none of them, this one is no different and by far the most interesting, thank you
Thank you, Samish!
dude you make amazing videos. can't wait for your next upload
Thank you!
dude is the literal epitome of "play stupid games, win stupid prizes".
This is a topic I'd imagine on countdankula's madlad series.
Omfg yes
Welcome back Atrocity! Missed you 💕
Just found your channel and am excited to watch your content. Excellent work.
Thank you, Joshua, hope you enjoy! :)
Yay!!! I was looking forward to your next upload! Great video as always!
I can tell that this Chanel is gonna be famous
There's some recent development on this story:
"Washington, DC, January 2, 2024 - Miller & Chevalier Chartered has secured a judgment of nearly $50 million against the Syrian government on behalf of Kevin Dawes, an American citizen who was kidnapped, imprisoned, and tortured for nearly four years by the Syrian government. "
There's also a 2021 interview with him for NPR: "An American was locked up in Syria. A pact with a British inmate may have saved him"
I want this dude to be my _FO:New Vegas_ character from now on.
Can’t believe I’ve never heard of this before! Great video
Hmm... Sleep? Or watch new Atrocity Guide video? No contest!
Great post! I appreciate the quality of your videos.
Thank you! :)
Yet another intriguing story. Thank you!

Regardless of the politics, the guy has got balls, initiative and determination
Was waiting for an upload any day now ... you never disappoint!
Im still surprised more people don't talk about him
Wow, what a ride. Appreciate you and what you choose to cover.
