I went vegan 3 yrs ago and I wouldnt go back for ANYTHING... not only do I feel less guilty about my carbon footprint, but my health has improved immensly! No more hypertension or type 2 diabetes!!
@@chillytoes1 Of course you can. If you get back to normal BMI, diabetes type 2 can go away. You cannot reverse diabetes type 1, but you surely can type 2.
@@victorpetrov829 no, what you are talking about is diet controlled diabetes, where you take no medication but you still have diabetes. diabetes can be controlled by different methods, insulin, metformin, or diet, there is no cure for it!! pre-diabetes can be reversed, because you are on the verge of getting it but can stop it if diet, exercise, and weight loss.
@@chillytoes1 Controlling it is when you have to stay away from certain (perfectly normally healthy) foods to stay clear. Wow! I listen to Democracy Now twice most days bc it is just so much to process! But this vegan work is sinking in deeply. Nonviolence, planetary kindness, real health, means we can focus on humanitarian aid instead of cruel policies! Praises and gratitude for what we can do to offset insane practices!
They probably wont end the subsidies as long so many people fund animal ag. Politicians r often like animal ags puppets. Animal ag is one of the richest industries. Representivies often do what animal ag pays them to, such as to give them subsidies, tax breaks, and sometimes letting them get away w breaking the law or changeing the law for animal ag. Its good to call reps and tell them to end the subsidies and not vote for people who r pro farm subsidies, but its important to focus on trying to get the public to go vegan as well. Also Contact board members, share holders, brand ambassadors, and famous people who r pro non vegan stuff, and try to turn them vegan.
The US government also promotes the products of animal agriculture through mandatory checkoff programs. It is like collecting a tax from them for advertising.
What about 3rd world and famine stricken counties... Would you be as adamant to these people? Also the fact your pet cats and dogs are fed with by-products of the meat production, do you feel we need to stop keeping these "pet animals" because of their carbon footprint and/or because (in a vegan dream world) the cost of feeding these pets would increase to a point where only the extremely wealthy would have the privilege of being able to afford such an luxury?
Anyone who doesn't appreciate our fellow sentient beings, try watching the documentary Earthlings. I could not get past about 4 minutes, but I knew much of what it was showing. It is incredibly upsetting.
@@Kristal-Gamerthat’s absolutely not true. Veganism is not a diet, but a drive to help other creatures. And if you don’t care about farmed animals maybe you should think about his you would react to somebody eating your pets.

It's so easy to eat plant based. It's literally going to your supermarket and buying the stuff. People don't have to make anything weird, plant based is as convenient as animal based diets.
What do you think will be most effective in getting people to eat less meat: telling people it's 'so easy' or creating an easier route for them to change their diet, by providing cultured meat?
Jae Lynn than buy organic and stop eating animals that were fed RoundUp - I assume you don’t eat any veggies if that’s your excuse to continue eating meat
Thank you so much for finally addressing meat consumption and climate change. For a long time I have been wondering when Democracy Now was going to talk about animal agriculture, being that you are strong proponents of sustainability. I have been vegan for more than 7 years and it is extremely easy to do with all of the plant based products available these days. What George said about the cheese seeming more like a lump of lard... that is exactly my experience as well. The thought of eating a slice of mozzarella pizza, which used to make me salivate, now brings feelings of disgust. Thanks again for raising this topic.
it's the casomorphins: a morphine like substance in dairy that keeps the calf coming back for more and it works on our brains too. I have to deliver pizza now and the cheese smell makes me want to hurl, it smells like rotting garbage. vegan for life!!
Well that’s your diet ! Not everyone wants a high sugar diet of veg animals ate a natural food and natural yo nature and the earth they are not the problem for climate change . It’s these super powers poking the earth’s atmosphere riddled with satellites blocking the sun and radiation damaging earth abd human life.
Its like this we need to change to survive. The sooner we all face up to this the sooner we can try to make things better. The past 200 years will be looked on in years to come as a time when we killed our planet.
@@jaelynn7575 Yes we plant trees where desertification has started but if the livestock would destroy the forest for feedlots and soya farming it would still be very disadvantageous. Totally going to a plant based diet is the only way for our planet to survive.
I've been vegan for almost 14 years and vegetarian for 27. Feel great. Look great. Super satisfied. Not hurting animals. And walking gently on the Earth. Win x 5!
I was raised on a cattle farm. I fattened my 4H steer on grain. My steer didn't digest the grain well. It got fat and unhappy, much like an obese man. When the calves were young we would separate them from their mothers but keep them on the farm a few days before shipping them off to the Midwest to be fattened and slaughtered. The cows and the calves would cry for each other all day and all night until the calves were finally taken away. That haunted me; soon after leaving the farm I became a vegetarian. Thirty five years ago I became a vegan. Ten years ago I gave up cooking my food. I'm 74 now and don't look or act my age at all. Just to give you an idea; today was a typical day for me on my job a a bicycle courier. I rode 25 miles in the course of my deliveries, including taking two different deliveries in which I found myself looking down on the city from several hundred feet up. My work day ended at 9 but I'm not even the slightest tired. What he says about one's taste changing is true. When I was growing up on the farm I ate steak three times a day and I imagined it would be very difficult to give up meat. What tastes good to me has gone through many revolutions in the course of my life but by now the healthier food is, the better it tastes to me. If I happen to get a taste of sugar cookie I can't help but spit it out; for me the equivalent of a cookie is eating a broccoli floret right in the garden or even better one of the many edible weeds that most gardeners discard.
This is one of the very few times Democracy Now has even mentioned animal agriculture. Animal welfare is never discussed unless amimal rights protesters have been jailed. I believe we are doomed because people will not give up meat, and this addiction is becoming worse. Deforestation, climate change, animal cruelty and bad health from the factory farms, but we never hear about it on Democracy Now, only the same stories about cruelty to people, over and over. Of course people are important, but let's have some balance. Thank you for this good interview, but it's not enough.
Thanks to DNow for airing this , and to Mr Monbiot for his efforts to inform and educate the public. Sadly , the people who most need to hear these truths ... won't
"How can I give up cheese" = "how can I give up drugs" Cheese contains casein. It also contains casein fragments called casomorphins, a casein-derived morphine-like compound. Basically, dairy protein has opiate molecules built in. When consumed, these fragments attach to the same brain receptors that heroin and other narcotics attach to.
I was one of those who refused to give up cheese. Then I just stopped and my skin cleared up and after a month, like the guest said, it tasted like a flavorless block of fat. I will never look back to meat and dairy. 10 years and going vegan and I was one of those people that thought veganism was stupid.
@@thegazetteyt That's awesome! I loved cheese but I noticed the change in my skin as well when I stopped the dairy products. My skin is brighter and pimple free. In addition, I don't have to go buy all those expensive creams for my face anymore. I also had a problem with acid reflux and feeling bloated, but since I stopped the dairy I feel much better.
They do, but not everywhere. If more people go vegan, there will be more vegan food. Be vegan so companies will see what u want and sell it to u. This comment section shows that liberal people are the same about their meat as conservatives are about their guns. It doesn't matter how good the arguments are their stories are more important.
It's not even close! lol. If anything it's the conservatives who are more into meat, you know, being that they are the cattle ranchers and all the BBQ in the Southern red states. Nice try, but totally wrong! Also, how can you know who's "liberal" based off of a few sentences? That's impossible. Also no one is ever just ONE thing and the parties have changed just in the past few years. The GOP party is now the "party of Trump," and the GOP has proven many times that they don't know how to govern. All they do is start new wars, spend like crazy on the MIC, cut back on green tech b/c they are oil/coal/gas tycoons, and they pollute. They are NOT working for the citizens, only companies and they also don't care how many kids die as long as they get to continue the Wild West that they are delusional over.
Several points are misleading and he avoids mentioning any similar issues with conventional plant production. 1."[Meat and dairy production]...leads to the collapse of biodiversity..." Lack of biodiversity, pollution from runoff, and soil erosion are not exclusive to animal husbandry; they are also an issue in conventional plant agriculture. 2. At 4:30 he argues that condensed barn-raised animal husbandry is better than grazing husbandry because grazing animals "occupy more land." Of course the grazing animals directly occupy more land, but he avoids mentioning the land used to produce feed for the barn-raised animals. Additionally, this feed must be processed and transported with fossil fuels. 3. Aside from climate issues, barn-raised animals experience lower animal welfare, and these systems use too many antibiotics. I agree completely that people in developed nations need to reduce their meat consumption, but we also must observe that many people in developing nations are protein-deficient. My issue with his philosophy is he avoids all of the problems with conventional plant production. The intensive industrial systems we predominantly use have many negative ecological effects, and this is true for both plant and animal production. The best alternatives we have are more biodiverse, closed nutrient-cycle systems, and such system include both animals and plants.
Just cuz he didnt mention agriculture that just grows plants for humans doesnt mean its misleading. Animal ag is worse for the env than growing crops for humans on av. Watch cowspirasy.
After learning that it takes hundreds of gallons of water to process one hamburger, I only eat one hamburger a month. Since I am Italian most of my diet has been Mediterranean and vegetarian most of my life. I stopped eating veal 10 years ago and I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. I believe we can encourage more people to go vegetarian and vegan.
Maybe over there you can, but in the US they use Roundup and no way am I eating that if I can avoid it. Organic foods here also may not technically be "organic," and the cost is much higher. However, I too barely eat meat like I used to. In my 20's I probably had it daily, now, maybe once a week. I'm only 97lbs though and malnourished and can tell when I need protein. I hate beans so I won't be eating them for protein.
Great piece. A bit disappointed with Monbiot saying deer has to be killed in UK because of needed forest regrowth. Humans don't need to kill deer, and would do better not eating them. There are other ways to control populations without killing already born animals. Sterilization programs can be successful, for instance, or keeping deer in certain areas where they will self regulate.
I grew up in Missouri and ate bbq nearly every day of my adult life...then at the age of 38 I realized the inherent cruelty of slitting an individuals throat who wants nothing more than to be free from harm. I also realized that my dogs were just like cows, pigs, chickens, goats, etc. It was then that I shifted to a vegan diet over the next 12 months. I know many former animal farmers who feel the same way. Yes, we know the world can't go vegan overnight, but that shouldn't stop us from moving quickly in that direction. www.peaceablekingdomfilm.org
I think ethics needs to be made more of a priority in all this. Animals needs to eat each other. Humans do not for our health. The system should switch over to entirely plant based.
It's beautiful to see some of the media finally acknowledging this aspect of earth's destruction. Although for something so obvious, it took an awfully long time. I mean, feeding a cow until adulthood uses a lot of growing space and returns very little in food proportionately. Even leaving climate change out of the equation, we still have a world where people suffer from hunger. Why would we use our land to feed cows instead of people? I also appreciate what he's saying about hunting overpopulated species; that version of meat-eating actually makes sense...and you get a hobby out of it. :)
5 years ago they would've just changed the subject. Thank leo di caprio for going to the UN and getting agriculture topic into the international discourse about climate change
A more effective strategy for addressing population levels is through genetic engineering and immunocontraception, the same strategies that can be used to end the existence of animal predation altogether.
@@politicalvegan I don't hunt personally. It would break my heart. But I also don't judge others for choosing to do so, at least if they're eating the animal and especially if it's benefiting an ecosystem. Sometimes human interference is necessary to remedy the problems that human interference has caused. Also hunting is extremely humane compared to factory farming, so by all means, please hunt if you want to eat meat.
Monbiot will, hopefully, evolve his opinion further to speak in favor of whole plant based food. His idea that cultured 'fake' meat is OK doesn't go far enough. Companies are labeling prepared food as 'vegan' but many contain questionable chemicals (like vegetable gum,) or destructive products like palm oil, or genetically modified vegetables. Jumping on the bandwagon of vegan food creates profit for these companies but requires that consumers continue to be cautious.
This is where people need to be careful to differentiate between being vegan and someone who only eats a plant-based diet. Going vegan includes more than just ditching dairy, eggs and meat.
Yes, this is also true, and eating unhealthy plant-based food is very much possible, especially if one eats lots of those processed meat substitutes, chips, sugar/candy/soda etc, but it will still reduce the carbon foot print to a fraction of the meat & dairy consumer's.
Indeed. Too many people identify as vegetarian or vegan but don't evolve conscious thought of what they're eating and how it's produced. They usually believe as long as they're eating foods labeled veg then they're guilt free. But still eat processed foods that continue the cycle of environmental destruction.
In that sense, @@mintysingularity, the vegan labels function like "cagefree" and "free-range" and "ethically farmed" for meat: it is the commodification and sale of relief in cultural capitalism, in that what you are buying is not merely a food but the lifestyle that exonerates you of the guilt and consequences of that food. It is how capitalism recuperates anticapitalist sentiments and social consciousness. Žižek frequently talks about this. Here is some introductory material: th-cam.com/video/hpAMbpQ8J7g/w-d-xo.html
@travin, Even worse, as England's veggie/vegan eaters are increasing, their lawmakers are making it so GMOs, with their massive cancer-causing pesticide use and pollinator death spiral, will be completely invisible and unavoidable to consumers attempting to cause less damage to selves and planet. (I wonder what kind of organics law they have? It's the only way for U.S.-ers to know much about what we are buying/eating.)
He's Right! All my nicknames since college involved meat "Carnivore Bob", "Meatstick", etc. But when I switched to a plant-based diet ... it turned out to be easy! Frankly, I was shocked; I don't even like looking at a lot of the foods I used to eat, such as cheese.
It's amazing also how tastes can change. I had an aversion to tomato sauce for years and I used to live off of spaghetti. Same goes for milk. I stopped drinking it b/c it just made me congested. I quit drinking soda once and when I had it again, it was too sweet. Unfortunately, I went back to drinking soda b/c my tap water tastes like chalk and chlorine! Plus, I'm in an old house that may still have lead pipes for all I know!
Yeah I like the beyond burger and a lot of vegan cheese but if I want a nice pesto i need my Parmesan cheese. It’s not a dish I eat everyday but it is childhood comfort food for me. Maybe someday someone will make a good substitute but for now nah
It is fascinating to me how westerners care about their dogs, get them to the doctor for vaccines, MRI, surgeries, give them proper burial, etc. And at the same time they eat pork. Pigs are more intelligent than dogs. You cannot eat horses in the USA, but you can eat beef. Drop all meat and milk foods. It is way easier than you think.
I 'woke' to the horror of slaughtering animals for my food only at age 53. Sorry it took so long. I've remained vegan for nearly three years so far. Every time I even have an inkling of desire for my old food favorites, a video like this reminds me that staying vegan is incredibly important for my health, the animals, the planet and for my own level of hypocrisy (I can't unsee the cruelty and secretly backslide for a cheeseburger). If you eat animals, please reconsider how it must feel to be corralled, mistreated and then killed in front of those next in line. Compassion is not just for humans.
I went vegan 3 months ago for health reasons and I couldn't be happier with the results! The environment and animal welfare are also important to me which helped me to never feel like I wanted to go back to the way I was.
Watch earthlings the movie it's free on youtube. Veganism isnt for health. Definition of “veganism” as: "A philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude-as far as is possible and practicable-all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals." A whole food plant based diet is often for health.
While I agree with Mr. Monbiot completely, and I don't eat animal products, and haven't for years, my experience with people it that it is incredibly difficult to get them to even think about changing what they eat. One must overcome culture, habit, subliminal survival instincts, opinion, and propaganda. I'm glad you brought up Allan Savory too. Simply put, with a world population of 7.2 billion and growing, we are not going to suddenly change the planet into small farming cooperatives, so "everybody" can enjoy eating as much meat as they want.
Problem is, with decades of ignorance and propaganda, we have lost the time for gradual integration. Now it is time for sudden change. People will cry and scream (like in France right now), but what is the alternative? I only hope the people who peddled that climate change denying bullshit are hold accountable and made an example of.
@@diptarkadas5193 Sad but true. Maybe only when Americans can't drive their SUV's up to a fast food window for a bag of factory food-like items will they finally begin to get it. Maybe.

There's a couple of problems with this piece but it's good that George Monbiot finally recognises that animal agriculture is a disaster for the planet, but he doesn't understand the ethical reasons why we should stop using sentient animals as resources. Full stop. We need to grasp that understanding that animals do not exist for our purposes. They are fellow Earthlings who exist for their own reasons and they are not our resources. . The 2nd problem with this is his advocating of what he describes as "cruelty" free lab meat. That's does not exist and why would one advocate a product that is not only unnecessary and still requires large herds and the blood of baby foetal calves taken from their still beating heart after being cut from their slaughtered mother's abdomen (dairy) as medium, but it's still unhealthy and responsible for many of the Western diseases we see today - diabetes, coronary heart disease, and so forth. And it is a very complicated process to obtain this "lab meat" or "clean meat" or "super meat" or whatever people try to call it. It has many problems and it would be a very difficult thing to mass produce. And why do this when we can easily meet all our nutrition requirements from plants (and other non-animal sources) and a plant based diet is completely sustainable, healthy, and requires far less resources and it certainly requires no herds or baby calves to produce it. And furthermore, there is no such thing as an "almost vegan". Veganism is an ethical position which rejects using sentient animals as resources because sentient animals are not property. So George Monbiot, because he hasn't internalised the ethical position, he still eats eggs, eats meat of deer which he says need to be "culled" (not so), and he seems to think that it is justified to eat the flesh of deer because we've killed the predators who kill the deer. If George stopped for a moment and thought about that he would realise that once we stop killing predators to "protect livestock" (in a vegan society) there will be a balance of predator and deer. In a vegan society we won't have the issue of overshoot of populations of deer and other species caused by our animal product consumption/animal agriculture practices. That's why internalising the ethical position of veganism is so important, because we will always continue making excuses as to why we need to kill this species and that species, and how a little bit of this animal product once and a while is fine. However having said this, it is good to see the issue of animal agriculture and its devastation is finally on Democracy Now since it would appear DN have done their best to pretty much ignore the entire issue. Have they not seen this documentary Cowspiracy.com and hopefully they will see this one Seaspiracy.org Time to evolve and move on from a indoctrination that causes the torture and killing of one trillion land and aquatic animals every year for unnecessary reasons and is destroying our health and the environment. I thought it would be hard to make the switch, but it was much easier than expected. I noticed pleasant changes in my body with a vegan diet.
Before the Industrial Revolution 41% of the Earth's land surface was covered with grasslands now it is about 14%. Monbiot is absolutely right. Since flying insects are now taking a dive we have precious little time left.
Vegan products have made a huge leap in quality and availability. I love eating lamb but I have reduced meat consumption to small hobby farms. The key is simply making vegan the norm because people need to be able to pick up food on the go, and also affordability
FINALLY someone who dares mention this. I am not a vegetarian btb, but try to limit meat and dairy, or rather I focus to increase plants which I thankfully love to eat too. So far I started reaping the benefits in increased health, happiness and better energy levels.
I think that point needs to be made... We don't need to be dogmatic about the switch; just help each with the process, making it easier without judgement. Even if we can get everyone down to 10 - 20 % of their diets being meat/dairy it will make all the difference. This has nothing to do with whether killing animals is right or wrong, it's about making life habitable for all of us, including wildlife.
Industrial modern cattle and dairy farming is not the only way to produce meat and dairy. Intensive Rotational Grazing is being proven to be regenerative and when implemented correctly can actually be carbon negative. There is a global movement going on in the agricultural world that the entire international media, including Democracy Now, has no understanding of and doesn't report on. Anything presented as an alternative to modern agriculture is laughed at by the media, even when backed by verifiable data. I'm an organic farmer and I want everyone to know we have all the knowledge and understanding we need to SOLVE the climate crisis and combat global poverty for very little money. It is not explained to public the very simple answer to our problem: more trees. We can have the knowledge, ability and money to design a world that is both sustainable and suits our needs, we just need more trees.
So sad to see that dairy cow limping away. A huge percentage of dairy cows can’t walk normally due to persistent pain. In the USA, there is a 38% lameness incidence rate reported in the national dairy herd. In the EU, the average number of cows believed to be lame at any one time is between 20 - 25%. Terrible industry.
George Monbiot is oversimplifying the argument against meat and dairy production. Whilst I agree with him about the cruelty of modern mass farming techniques, I disagree with him on his premise that we only have a binary choice between meat (as produced by modern farming techniques) and veganism. Romania is the largest sheep farming country in the EU, but also boasts the largest numbers of bears and wolves in the EU. Shepherds have learned to co-exist with predators over centuries. I have observed these transhumance shepherds for many years and it is obvious to me that we need to rethink livestock husbandry and meat production. An animal that grazes on the move through meadows whilst protected from predators lives a much happier and healthier life than one that lives indoors in confined conditions. They eat natural food and leave a carpet of droppings on these meadows that enrich the grass and wild flowers before moving to new pastures. They return to these same fertile meadows the following year on rotation and so the cycle continues. I call this 'slow meat production', which is kinder to the environment, livestock and healthier for the consumer. I agree that we all need to eat less meat but I don't believe that we need to cut it out altogether. www.wildtransylvania.com/p/walking-with-shepherds.html
Jacob Edward no I am not vegan. Though I do believe we should curtail eating all the various animals. Some eating is just because people want to try something new or eat anything that moves. I really think we should scale back and have more vegetables fruits and nuts.
One thing you have to remember about the difference between agricultural generation of greenhouse gases and fossil fuel extraction. Although the means of returning of CO2 to the soil is hurt by over grazing on the earth's land masses, extraction of ancient buried CO2 sources is adding more than the earth could possibly recycle, even with the help of humans. One can be remedied while the other is catastrophic. We don't need to eliminate Meat and Dairy, we just need to push for more consumption of vegetables, and fruits. Of course we all know that the problem is overpopulation, and excess consumption of our natural resources that is the real problem. Expanding into space is not a viable alternative to save our civilization in time.
Thanks for this DN. I have been vegetarian for over a decade now and I'm considering moving back to eating meat because of holistic management. GM misses some important points when he describes HM and when he describes what he considers to be the superior benefits of veganism. Please speak to someone at the Savory Institute to get their side of this truly complex story.
Allan Savory is an industry shill pumping mis info for the industry and people who dont want to change their habits, like you, repeat this propaganda. Look into what Savory did to Elephants in Africa to see how credible he is.. lmao
YOU can stop eating meat and dairy, but those of use who raise our own meat and milk and live in symbiosis aren't giving it up. My goat grazing is good for my land, she fertalizes as she eats. But I agree FACTORY farming sucks.
I’ve stopped eating dairy since I’ve found out I was lactose intolerant and I’ve come across the same thing . . . Dairy products gross me out now. Make me feel physically sick (probably has some to do with that eating dairy actually makes me physically sick). I thought I’d never be able to give up yogurt. Now it’s just not appetizing. Though sour cream has been difficult. . . I’m Hungarian and that’s a big part of our culture. I want to be vegan (or as close to as possible) for my own sake, morally.
eh...this can be mitigated a bit better with conservative consumption of meat and better to integrate Permaculture to BUILD SOIL and NATURE that will CONSUME MORE CARBON.

In 1982, NASA affiliate Sandia Labs - published a report on the Magma Energy Project, proving the viability of drawing limitless heat energy directly from molten rock, easily converted into base load electricity and clean burning hydrogen fuel. Had that technology beed developed and applied 40 years ago, agriculture wouldn't be responsible for 15% of greenhouse gas emissions. Had magma energy been used to meet all our energy needs carbon free, plus desalinate water to irrigate land for agricuture - it wouldn't have been necessary to burn forests and/or deplete acquifers and natural water courses. And it wouldn't be necessary to stop eating meat. But the technology wasn't developed and applied. Environmentalists didn't demand it should be; why is that? Because greens are anti-capitalist - they don't want a prosperous sustainable future. They want climate change to disprove capitalism, and for environmental and economic collpase to be followed authoritarian government and universal poverty. Status of the Magma Energy Project Dunn, J. The estimated size of the U.S. resource (50,000 to 500,000 quads) suggests a considerable potential impact on future power generation. In a previous seven-year study, we concluded that there are no insurmountable barriers that would invalidate the magma energy concept. Several concepts for drilling, energy extraction, and materials survivability were successfully demonstrated in Kilauea Iki lava lake, Hawaii. The present program is addressing the engineering design problems associated with accessing magma bodies and extracting thermal energy for power generation. The normal stages for development of a geothermal resource are being investigated: exploration, drilling and completions, production, and surface power plant design. Current status of the engineering program and future plans are described. p.s. A quad is a quadrillion btu. Current global energy demand is 600 quads. This report estimates a minimum of 50,000 quads of magma energy just from the US alone. So please explain, what's with the windmills and veganism?
Ending meat and dairy consumption might be one of many solutions but many solutions need to be simultaneously done. Most of the economy is useless and wasteful so shutting down those parts is absolutely necessary. Expecting to continue economy and the growth of the economy while expecting some changes to the energy portion is not going to make a difference. Monbiot should be smart enough to realize this.
The karma that will come from us torturing animals for food when the opposite should be the fact we can raise small amounts of animals to satisfy meat consumption but it is extremely complicated
George Monbiot didn't mention that pasture fed and finished meat from cows produced more methane because it takes a lot longer for those cows to reach slaughter weight compared to grain fed cows.
Got to be careful how it is done. Switching diet overnight can cause food intolerances especially if folk keep switching between veganism and meat eating. A high proportion of people would not be starting from a balanced diet to veganism but a high carb / processed diet and obesity and are likely vitamin and mineral starved. With obesity comes non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with various degrees of severity which also needs managing - there are plenty of books on this. Agree going vegan is part of the strategy for tackling climate change but it needs to be sustainable. Meat needs to be phased out and getting rid of the nastiest and most processed meats helps greatly eg bacon, sausages, burgers and other preserved and processed meats (try doing without these for a week and see how that improves digestion). As George mentioned deer are a problem for the UK in terms of reforesting (as are sheep) so venison is fair game - ba da boom - in small protions. One egg a month is also good strategy for the B vitamins and especially B12. We also need to campaign against intensive farming especially at the planning stage when new industrial farming developments are being proposed. Also the 'fattening up' process could be campaigned against since this is likely the biggest waste of grain (and possibly more belching).
The meat industry as we know it now is admittedly very destructive, but being critical of it is not the same as "Ending Meat & Dairy Consumption" altogether. The way I see it is, at least meat should become something of a luxury again, just like a century ago, until we develop less harmful ways to produce it.
Add to these points the connection of widespread decline in health in nations who consume meat and dairy centered diets and in nations adopting a typical western diets. Some of my own family have rejected all animal foods and processed foods and are measurably reversing our progression of diabetes, heart disease, obesity. We are WFPB SOS* eaters and it does not feel like a sacrifice. Connecting human ill health, animal cruelty, environmental destruction and social inequity can really push action. *(whole food plant based, no processed sweeteners, zero oils, and very low salt)
Thank you Democracy Now! Finally, this topic is being covered by your reporting. Climate change should never be discussed with talking about the direct impact of the animal industry.
Most people now know about methane (CH4) emissions from agriculture but remember also Nitrous Oxide (N2O) which has 298 times the potency of CO2 as a greenhouse gas. Agrichem is the supplier of Nitrogen fertilizer which is added to land both for crop growth & for intensive grass grazing by livestock. This nitrogen is broken down by soil bacteria & released as Nitrous Oxide emissions. Livestock manure & slurry pits also generate N2O and CH4. Both the Nitrogen and water soluble Nitrous Oxide run off land into water courses, eventually reaching the ocean where they feed the poison algae blooms & deoxygenation of water thus killing off marine life & substantially degrading the catches/profitability of fishing.

I'm glad you have him on the show and TAKE HIM SERIOUSLY, eating animals is not allowed. By God. I can't believe he just said he'll eat roadkill. Maybe he plays into the humour.
People are not going to stop eating meat. Good luck on that. At least, let us encourage people to eat free-range meat. They will eat less because it will be more expensive, and at least we will stop the infliction of inhumane torture upon farmed animals.
It really should not be too hard because globally fish is so poisoned from fertilizer/herbicide/pesticide run-off into the oceans, Fukushima, toxic algae, & toxic metals from industrial processes, Its in the food chain from the plankton right up to humans, whales, tuna, dolphin etc etc. Farmed fish/shellfish is often just as bad, typically being raised on feed with toxic residues & with regular chemical medications.

"The best way to save the planet is drop meat and dairy" The planet will be here long after we are gone. Why do I envision massive problems when I hear "suck carbon out of the atmosphere"? Maybe we should just engineer people to breath CO2 insted of oxygen.
While important to treat symptoms of climate related problems, the root cause is the earth’s human footprint - we reduce this (eg, 2-5 billion fewer humans on the planet), consumption of beef or anything would be far less problematic. Without including reduction of human footprint, bovine reduction alone will only lead to other and continued problems.
I eat meat. On my land I can't grow crops. But I can raise sheep and poultry. I also like textured vegetable protein. But some jackass said it was health food and now the price has gone way up.
Civilization has gone crazy. In Canada the so called Canada goose is protected in provinces where it was not native and since there are too many their eggs are destroyed not consumed.
I'm slowly crossing over, like George I still have eggs occasionally, and I'm experimenting with the plant-based meat substitutes which are genuinely getting better. I love things like scones, muffins and shortbread, and those things really need milk and/or butter to work, and the alternatives don't work so well. Also, I still need cow's milk in my cuppa. I've been hopeful that the lab grown milk would be available by now, but it seems to have disappeared from discussion.
I used to live on cappuccino, and bought half&half by the half gallon. My favorite "half&half" for coffee is now 80% extra creamy oatmilk & 20% oatmilk creamer. Silk, Planet Oat and/or Chobani.
I became a vegan for the animals; the eating of a sentient beings able to feel fear, pain, despair, is more than I can bear, that it helps the planet is a huge plus.
But it's not the angle to promote. Most people do not share your view and when it is emphasised then it turns people away, and we need to be turning people toward... The reason for doing this is to address the climate crisis, and most people will be onboard with that.
A subject to be heard more of! Selflessness to give up meat for the good of our beautiful planet and to not contribute to the cruelty animals endure in factory farms right up to their violent murders! I have been veg/vegan since 2006. Giving up eating animals for the animals. Compassion in this way has its rewards...no high blood pressure, diabetes, bad blood blocking cholesterol etc. If you love animals STOP eating them!!
I agree that we should reduce meat consumption BUT not everyone can tolerate a diet of pulses and grains without becoming ill, (I was vegetarian for 13 years but developed allergies to grains and intolerance to pulses) we are evolved to eat some meat, just not the quantity we eat in the west so for that reason I disagree with forcing veganism on everyone. Greed, as always, is the biggest problem.
now I received a very sad news, in Brazil the president elected Bolsonaro chose his new minister of the environment. The Chosen believe it or not, is not a scientist, is not an environmentalist but rather a lawyer, who before as secretary of the environment of sao paulo, has always been on the side of industries, not respecting riverbanks, working against everything that the environment need. Now as chosen by Bolsonaro in a G1 interview he says that "data on deforestation are generic and do not reveal whether action is 'illegal'", taking credibility from INPE, as well as IPCC reports, saying that studies on the causes of change are still in the academic field. signaling that he is a denier of global warming. Commented broadly on the property rights of producers can not be suppressed by alarmists. I would like to see a special one from you about this tragedy announced.

Great report! Tax subsidies for meat and dairy is $38 billion/year. Speak to your representatives in the House
how insane is that... so much for limited government... are you Vegan?
Absolutely. Killing animals for meat should be prohibitively expensive, not on corporate welfare.
There is absolutely no need to kill animals to sustain life
What about 3rd world and famine stricken counties...
Congrats i think you just debunked veganism

It's so easy to eat plant based. It's literally going to your supermarket and buying the stuff. People don't have to make anything weird, plant based is as convenient as animal based diets.
Yeah, I'm not into eating Roundup.
What do you think will be most effective in getting people to eat less meat: telling people it's 'so easy' or creating an easier route for them to change their diet, by providing cultured meat?

Thank you so much for finally addressing meat consumption and climate change. For a long time I have been wondering when Democracy Now was going to talk about animal agriculture, being that you are strong proponents of sustainability. I have been vegan for more than 7 years and it is extremely easy to do with all of the plant based products available these days. What George said about the cheese seeming more like a lump of lard... that is exactly my experience as well. The thought of eating a slice of mozzarella pizza, which used to make me salivate, now brings feelings of disgust. Thanks again for raising this topic.

I quit Meat early this year. Lost weight and feel good about it.
Thanks to DNow for airing this , and to Mr Monbiot for his efforts to inform and educate the public. Sadly , the people who most need to hear these truths ... won't
"How can I give up cheese" = "how can I give up drugs"
Cheese contains casein. It also contains casein fragments called casomorphins, a casein-derived morphine-like compound. Basically, dairy protein has opiate molecules built in. When consumed, these fragments attach to the same brain receptors that heroin and other narcotics attach to.
Yes, and they also have lots of hormones and antibiotics (one reason for antibiotic resistance)

1."[Meat and dairy production]...leads to the collapse of biodiversity..."
Lack of biodiversity, pollution from runoff, and soil erosion are not exclusive to animal husbandry; they are also an issue in conventional plant agriculture.
Fantastic and much needed contribution! Great job to George Monbiot and Democracy Now!

Definition of “veganism” as:
"A philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude-as far as is possible and practicable-all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."
A whole food plant based diet is often for health.
I only hope the people who peddled that climate change denying bullshit are hold accountable and made an example of.

being vegan and eating whole plants and mushrooms grown veganically and locally does awesomeness things for the animals, the humans who would be killing animals in slaughterhouses, the humans who would be denied grains being fed to animals being bred for slaughter, the humans who are eating vegan food instead, the environment, and the collective consciousness of humanity.
Vegan products have made a huge leap in quality and availability.
I love eating lamb but I have reduced meat consumption to small hobby farms.
The key is simply making vegan the norm because people need to be able to pick up food on the go, and also affordability
Thank you George for saying the truth

Thank you DN for introducing George. I’ve watched him for years and he’s really struggled to get his voice heard about this.
I think the amount of fresh water used for crops around the world, is a great drawback for vegan over meat.
I agree that we all need to eat less meat but I don't believe that we need to cut it out altogether. www.wildtransylvania.com/p/walking-with-shepherds.html
we do need to eat less meat.
are you vegan?
Status of the Magma Energy Project
Dunn, J. C. (Sandia National Labs., Albuquerque, NM.)
Abstract
The current magma energy project is assessing the engineering feasibility of extracting thermal energy directly from crustal magma bodies.
NJ used to be the literal “garden state”. Now all the vegetables come from California on trucks.
Not carnivore, not guilty
are you vegan?
There Are people in this World that Need to eat less. Americans. And there Are people in this World needing to eat more.

Fish is the hardest meat to give up for me but 2019 I am going for the plant based diet. It is just the right thing to do on every level.

The planet will be here long after we are gone.

Let's also make the link between violence against non humans and violence in human society.
