- Today we are starting a new chain driven 4 wheel drive project. In this video we are making the rear chain drive hubs with 1.5" ID bearings. these hubs are very similar to the rear hubs that I made for the CBR 1000 buggy project, but these hubs are bigger and should be stronger to handle the 32" tall tires.

I've been machining 35 yrs. Having arms whipping around in a lathe still makes me pucker. Never become complacent around such things, that's when it'll getcha!
This is really good advice! When you stop being afraid of the sketchy stuff is when bad thigs happen. 30 yr construction / electrician.
He could've done the same thing with the lathe with the spindles fixated to the cross slide with a bore fly cutting tool chucked into his lathe and it would've been safer... the lathe is quite truly the only machine that can make a complete duplicate of itself

Excellent choices. But know this first, if ever there was a time and option to beef up the Trans clutch, this is it. That is where all the drive train stress will be concentrated with those huge tires no matter how low the gearing is. Of all your builds this one is by far the most interesting. I do agree with your Polaris viewpoint, minus the CVT system.
I didn't even think of that! You are absolutely right! Bike clutches are designed (typically) to drive one wheel and haul less than 700lbs.. He will need a super duty racing clutch.
@@jlucasound Yep. There is a guy that put a Hyabusa engine on a Razr and he had to use a cvt clutch from a razr because no clutch could hold the torque he produced from that turbo engine. If he was building a cross kart then the original clutch would work but this build will be far heavier than 700 lbs, being a 2 seater with how heavy he builds everything.

Little tip, set the rim on a 5 gallon bucket when mounting. Lets the tire flop over a bit.

This mirrors my own custom spindle plan. Choose tires, estimate scrub radius and kingpin angle, weld stuff to an off the shelf hub. Repeat.

Rockabilly’s are awesome tires. A couple of guys I ride with have them, and we have yet to find a spot they don’t work. Killer in the rocks, good in mud, and have a long lifespan!
You should do an add on to your shed for bigger builds. This has got to be the biggest build yet. It’s gotta least twice the size bigger than the rock crawler you did once it’s done. Keep up the awesome work.
Pro tip for you bud. Use the angle of the floor and your bench to stomp the bead in on the deeper side of the rim. Then turn it around hook up air and use your foot to apply a tiny amount of pressure inward to get the bead to seat on the shallow side of the rim. Keep angle enough so as it inflates it doesn't bind between ground and bench.

Remember, 8.8 grade on metric bolts is like a grade 5 bolt. You need grade 10.8 metric to be equal to a grade 8 bolt.

Hi Chris your king pin should be in line with each other were a rod can pass thru both bolt holes look at Jeep spindles like on a Cherokee.

Call Ricks Custom Cycle in Michigan. They make tons of badass parts for these engines and can maybe point you in the direction of a turbo, jetting, etc
In 2006 I bought a new Hayabusa. I still have it and have wanted to do this. I'm watching with envy. They hit really strong at 6k rpm. Its a beast! A turbo will be frightening.

I use metric system. Make sure that the metric bolts for your spindle have good strenght written on them for example "5.8" "8.8" "10.9" Usually 10.9 is the right one. It is commonly used in car suspension or engine heads.

You could make a limited slip dif, witha a clutch pack, like one smal disc rotor with 2 or pairs of brake pads and make it adjustable, Could be better for stearing

Sometimes setting a bead you can bounce the tire or hit it with a rubber deadblow hammer the impact is sometimes enough to set it.
According to This Old Tony, the metric system is used by 15/16 of the world !
I would reconsider using a differential in front, otherwise steering radius will be terrible and heavy, maybe you can find a locking differential if its neccesary to do so. This is just a recommendation of mine and propably others, considering the effort you put in to this and many other projects🙂

Just run longer CV axles so the arc of the tire is traveling a longer distance increasing suspension travel.
Are you going to run your inner hingepins closer together than on the spindle to get a camber gain on compression?
I agree, those cv axles are too short for any decent travel.

Could you lengthen the shaft on the CV joints to get a little more travel? It would make the vehicle a little wider and it would take some math to figure out how much travel increase you would get from each additional inch but it may be worth it if you are planning some large jumps or rock crawling with this vehicle. You did say you were not planning to use a differential so maybe you could get more lenth in the CV joint shafts by making the center mouting point as narrow as possible. Just thinking out loud here.

Looking good, your probably already aware but if you decide you want more angle the subaru inner tripod cv joint limits travel .By using porsche type 944 or 930 cv shafts you get more angle as they have the outer joints on both ends.
At the beginning of the video, why don’t you use the old brake cleaner and lighter truck to set the tire on the bead? Not being critical, just wondering if there is a better way to do that or if you just prefer the other method
You can put a lot of Air no problem in the tyres dont be afraid lathe IS way more scary!! I do tyres and you need a lot of psi to set the bead but its very safe just keep your fingers away!!
At this rate I expect to see on madram in a year or two driving a home made rock bouncer 😁
I’ve held the pressure to some tires and they took 140+ psi to set when you pop a couple it’ll no longer scare you.

Just a tip for fuel pump, regular automotive ones will work fine, the critical thing is flow and rail pressure, you can purchase a 4-6 bar pump and use a regulator to bring it down to 3.25 bars, so if you do turbo (yeah 6 bar pump thus be better than 4 bar), raising rate type regulator would be ideal and just add additional pressure which will also increase amount of fuel flow

Not sure but. If the camera says anything. I was watching your videos on a few of the vehicles you built. I think the alignment of the front tires are off is the reason for bad handling at speed. Great job man on everything for sure

If you extend those axles (like you have done in the past) you can get a bit more travel out of them.
Just get a lock on air chuck and set the regulator on your compressor at 50psi.
Then just turn it on and walk away. The bead seats itself.

And try and run a 30/70 ratio or 40/60
30% of shock shaft stuck out and the last 70% for down travel and landing!

$45 bucks for all of that aluminum?! What a score! I wish I could have bought it. (p.s. you need to look into a independent four jaw chuck, they are many times easier to set-up oddball parts on the lathe. )
I hope after this project you revisit the VF-1000. Whether that's redesigning the back section for a car engine or rebuilding it to add a transmission like the CBR1000 buggy.
did you have the core in the valve stem when you was inflating, they seat quicker with no core in.

There are ready to mount turbo kits for those monsters..
Get you one of them air chucks the tire shops have, they clip on and just keep filling and they listen for the beads to set from a safe place. Tires can explode, usually its bc of negligence and over filling but accidents do happen. When a tire explodes it is capable of taking you with it, go search up videos of that and it will make you never wanna fill another tire 🤣

Driving skill will make up for the limited travel. People have gotten spoiled by sidexsides. I've taken full sized jeep wagons places sidexside driver wont go. I drove my super duty up a mountain that less skilled drivers will only take sidexsides or 4 wheellers. You will do fine.
Down the line you should put rcv axle on this thing! Much stronger and more travel...
