    Thank you for this informative video. The amplifier as an addition to the G90 would be tempting. But I also think that using my IC-7300 would provide a bigger radio display and a lot less cabling. Still that amplifier is tempting. You are lucky to have access to a park where you can drive your mast into the ground and where you have a bench to set up. Here in New York City our parks don’t have enough benches so they are usually occupied and nothing like wire can touch a tree and no holes or digging into the ground is allowed. Enjoy your times out portable. 73 de N2LRB

      Options my friend. Options. That’s gotta be rough in the city. Maybe you can find a place to set up with a portable chair and table? Something you could pick up at a camping store perhaps. Light enough to carry.

    Nice operating video. The specs for the XPA-125B amp shows it draws 30 amps max. Any reason you didn't get close to that many amps at 90+ watts? Also did you have any problem connecting the G90 to the Amp through the CE-19 interface? I just received the CE-19 and the sheet a paper/manual shows a switch to connect the interface 8V/ALC and default off, not connected to the 6 pin-minini (connect XPA125 interface). I don't have the amp, but wondering how it's connected.

    Great review. Thanks. I am considering changing from 5 w FT 818 (cw only on 40 and 20 for rag chewing) to my ten tec eagle with higher power. I would be interested in any comparison you have made from 5 w to 20 w, 40 w or 100 w in good signal above noise etc.

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great question. I would say it depends on your operating style/position. If you are just at home with your radio rag chewing between 5 and 100 watts, having 100 watts will certainly help you make contacts to other stations much easier. However, if you are the one calling CQ, I don't think your power is quite as important as your antenna. Having said that, if you can hear the station quite strong, I would suspect the other station would RX you. But, having more power to punch through the pileup is where 100W is going to help. There is def an advantage to higher power in those situations.

    45 minutes, 2.5Ah. That's really interesting, so about 3 hours before the battery is exhausted. 2 batteries needed for a day out portable. I guess it's possible. . . yes, interesting. Thanks.

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that's about par for the course for this setup at 100 watts. I usually use a 20AH battery when I'm operating 100 watts, so double that time. It really depends on how much you are transmitting though. Just on receive you could go almost 20 hours. I've never run out of battery, and you can increase your operating time if you add solar to the mix. I ran field day this year totally solar with a 100 watt panel and my 20ah battery with the IC-7300. When I got home and put the battery on the charger it only took 2 amp minutes before it was topped off!

    Had my G90 over a year and love it for portable. Just ordered the XPA125B for that extra kick you sometimes need. A question comes to mind. Can you do digital modes with this setup? Thanks Jack K5FIT

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know you can do digital with the G90 but I have never set it up. They don't make it easy I know that. Fortunately there are plenty of videos on TH-cam that should show you how. I'm just not really into digital.

    I need your help. I'm using a Xiegu G90 connected to a XPA125b amplifier through the C19 board. I use everything automatic, and I have set the G90 output power to 1 watt. The problem is that on the 40-meter band, I have good reception through the amplifier. On the 20-meter band, I can only hear signals that arrive with very good power, and on the 10-meter band, I can rarely receive clearly when the amplifier is connected as the manuals indicate. I have tested with colleagues, and the amplifier transmits perfectly. I should mention that to hear well, the G90 preamplifier must be turned on. Do you know what could be happening?

    Great video, add usual. Thanks. Congrats on your first dx contact. Just curious, on tuning freon 160 and up, I wonder how efficient that antenna is. Main thing is, you got out all over the place and nothing caught fire 😂😂.
    Again, great job. Have fun, stay safe and stay healthy. 73.

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. This was not my first DX contact, just the first dx contact that came back to a POTA activation that I can remember. At 160 and 80 the antenna would be all kinds of inefficient. I'm sure it would still work but a bit of the signal would be burned off in the coax on the way up. So long as the magic smoke doesn't come out you should be fine though. 73

    Well I tried a POTA activation and was disappointed with the results (0). I know I could do better with my mobile unit but we did not bring that vehicle on our vacation. I think I am through with the WRC SB-1000 setup. I don't want something difficult to setup and dink around with tuning. What antenna 20-40 (besides your DX expedition) do you recommend for a FT-891 radio and POTA?
    Thanks

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congrats! That is a very open ended and subjective question. Making an antenna is always going to be the cheapest route. You could make a fan dipole for multi-band, you could make a 9:1 random wire and use the tuner for pretty much all the bands, you could even stick a wire in the center of the SO-239 with a banana plug, and other wire on the ground lug as the counterpoise and get on the air. Or you could buy any of those types of antennas and then some. Some good ones are the PackTenna Mini 9:1, PackTenna EFHW, PackTenna Linked dipole, TennTennas EFHW. DX Commander Expedition. I don't know of a good commercial fan dipole but they are so easy to make. Just get a 1:1 balun and connect your wire to it for as many bands as you like. There are all kinds of instructions on the internet.

      It's just wide open. I don't have too many complaints about this radio but the lack of noise reduction and a notch filter does make it quite noisy. Other than that its a great entry level radio. I use it all the time.
