Facebook Marketplace Will Eventually Take Over Ebay...Here's Why

  • After months of listing items for sale on both Ebay and Facebook Marketplace, I am confident that Facebook will soon take over the spot of the top online selling platform available. I'll give you guys my main reasons why and show you a quick example. If you'd like for me to dig into this topic even further in a future video, be sure to let me know. If you disagree with me and you think Ebay will hold out without any major changes, drop a comment and let's have a discussion.

    I just did some testing. Listed the same item on eBay, Facebook, Mercari! Facebook by far got the most views and it's sold first on Facebook! I'm really starting to think that Facebook is going to beat out eBay in the future and hopefully they keep their fees down! I think you should make a full video on how to list all the way up to ship items on Facebook and it will probably get a lot of views! Thanks for all your videos you do

    I've found that items I buy at auctions sell better on eBay than Marketplace. Also, I get bombarded with questions/low offers from Marketplace. eBay is very limited contact with the buyer.

  • @thomasl7817
    @thomasl7817 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    Before I moved to eBay I sold exclusively local on Facebook and Craigslist. For a solid 10+ years. Back when the selling on facebook was 100% done in yard sale type groups. (which I do somewhat miss, you could get insane deals back then, now not so much.)
    The whole reason I moved to eBay was the sheer amount of crap you deal with on those. Sure you have morons on eBay, but it was nothing like the time wasters on the others. Anyone that has ever sold a significant amount of items there will know what I mean. I could spend hours talking about my misadventures. From someone showing up at my house unannounced at 7am cause they took "first with cash" a bit too literal (fun fact, I never used that phrase again haha), to driving almost an hour away only for the buyer to decide he's gonna turn the listing into bidding and the price went from $45 to $115.
    That brings me to just because facebook has more users, doesn't automatically equate to it being the answer over eBay. People get on eBay to buy/sell. Where as facebook that isn't the only reason.
    However you convinced me on another video to give shipping there a whirl. I never stopped using it for certain items so I'm well in the clear to sell. I have some things listed as experiments to see how it goes. But I tell ya the moment I start getting too many "is this still available" or dumb ass questions like "can you take half and meet me 2 hours away" for a $20 item it's done. I'd rather take a month or two to move something than ever go back to that headache, lol.

    • @xschx1
      @xschx1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah Craigslist is so bad in my area. I'd rather sell on ebay and pay the fees. CL you can list an item cheaper than they can get it anywhere else and it will still not be good enough. They all want $1 yard sale prices. Now I only meet local in my town, if they dont want to drive then I move on and wait for someone else. I've driven just to have people back out or no shows so I never will do it again I tend to cross list on Ebay and CL even though CL barely sells anything on there.

    Thank you for posting this video. I hadn't thought about Facebook as a selling platform for my used items. I recently tried to sell a new doll that I picked up from Walmart at a great price on eBay and immediately received a suspension and then within seconds an email for permanent suspension. I tried repeatedly to request more information but they refuse to explain why. My account was in good standing so I had no idea what happened. My husband believes our VPN made it look like I was a bot or something. After receiving canned answers for every request for more information, I finally got a live person on chat who claims he will submit my request to a higher authority but so far I haven't heard a peep. I'm hoping this comment will save someone a lot of future headaches.

    You should do a "how to" for Facebook Marketplace... from listing, to how to communicate with buyers and how to ship (label, what costs come out of our pockets, what packages are allowed to be used, etc).
    I think it might be slightly easier than Mercari or Ebay.

In case you dont know: EBAY charges 12.9% on the TOTAL item + shipping then $.30 and then they take//steal 12.9% taxes collected. SOOOOOOOOOOOOO on a $20 sell the total FEES add up to $3.09 AKA 15.45% so if shipping 8oz its 3.88 so your NET $13.03 lost third in shipping + fees :

    My theory on the item views disparity between eBay and Facebook is the motivation for being on the site.
    For someone to see your item on eBay they have to consciously choose to visit the site (or open the app) and then either search or browse, then depending on what they're looking for, they may see your item.
    For Facebook, someone could be just randomly scrolling through their newsfeed to kill time while they're on the toilet, when your item will randomly appear to them - they may not realise until they see it that what you're selling is exactly what they need.

I'd say 65% of the people who message asking if available never respond after that and then another 20% flake out the day of meetup. I don't get why so many people inquire and then just flake out. I was a content creator on there for gaming content. It's algorithm is the same for everything. Sorry Josh, I have failed you 😭😆 So many valid points though...well, guess I'll give FB marketplace a shot as my next platform 🤗 love the new intro as well!!! And the hand drawn portrait of you, Haley, and Mose at the end.....STOP. SO CUTE 😍🎉 Rachel did a fabulous job on it!!! Onwards and upwards to 100K my friend, I think I predicted it to be like March 15th or something in a video a few months back, I may have also possibly time traveled and know the exact date you'll hit it tooooo......ssssshhhhh 🙃

    I feel like it really depends on the item on eBay vs Marketplace. Shoes, clothes, maybe even video games, large items etc will likely sell better on Facebook where everything else would probably sell better on eBay. A lot of the random junk/stuff that sells on eBay I don’t think would ever sell on Marketplace. I usually do video game consoles and anything large on marketplace/too much of a pain to ship and everything else on eBay.

    The problem with selling men’s running shoes as women’s is that standard width men’s shoes are width D whereas women’s are width B. So while the length may be correct, it’s likely the width will not fit correctly.

    I don't want to leave ebay because they have a great call back system to protect from scammers or questions etc I sold a wii console only on fb marketplace without a question they refunded em the money when they were upset they didn't have the controllers. But was clearly in the title. It was automatically deducted from my total sales without even getting my console back and no response once from fb since why they accepted the refund. I like the ebay steps it takes to make everything trust worthy as a seller and buyer. But I do understand the eyes can be compelling to go and overlook the bad just depends what you sale on it since it shows it much easier to say it won't breakable' item when selling shoes. Loving the organized story videos

    I've been on the fence with facebook. Looks like I need to make the dive. Thanks to you I've just listed on fb for the first time in 2 years. I'm going to have to be careful with cross listing! I put a pair of shoes up and facebook just messaged me to list more SHOES saying they have really high sales rate on that item.. I'm also enjoying lotting up items without having to specify every single stupid detail of that item, or copying someone elses listing and making sure they got it all right.. like why the hell should I have to find out all the ingredients in some shampoo.. let the buyer do that research on google if they want to. Or ZOOM IN on my high quality pictures!

    I thought FB marketplace had shoddy seller protection? Its more like Craigslist IMO. Personally never use it because getting a hold of sellers is basically a PITA, and being a seller having to meet for majority of items is a hassle in itself if you work or are sourcing all the time like I do.

    I just sold on facebook after watching your video. Yes, the items received many views and some got fast sold times; however, the payout is extremely slow. I do not appreciate having to wait 5 days after the delivery to get my money. Here's their policy: Read our tips for buying and selling responsibly on Marketplace. You'll be paid 15-20 days after you mark the item as shipped and enter a tracking number, or 5 days after the item is delivered upon receiving delivery confirmation. The payout goes to the bank account that you entered when you set up shipping. - In my opinion that's too long to get paid. I get it, this is a different platform than Ebay, but I want my money as soon as possible. Just my thoughts.

    For the heavier items, too bad you can't ship UPS ground freight if the cost would be less than Ebay shipping. We have a Copy-Post & Ship near us that will tell us every time which service will give us the best price and delivery.
