It sounds like Cromwell didn't have any plans for the continuation of the Commonwealth. He had the opportunity to set up a democratic system in Britain which might have prevented the return of the monarchy, but he wasn't forward-thinking enough.

pinkpugginz...you are thinking correctly. You would think if they were filthy in the 17th century they must have been really disgusting in the previous centuries, right? You'd be mistaken, because in the previous centuries, people took great care with their hygiene. Perfume was invented by the French to hide the atrocious body odor from not washing - the 17th century saw a regression in hygiene, because people thought the "Humours" were at fault for diseases not the lack of cleanliness, and not germs (they were "damned" when they got sick)...and forks were invented not for eating, but for scratching their scalps due to lice! Thank goodness we live in these times with soap and hot water!

Little known fact about English-Dutch navy wars: Dutch cannon was better quality and shot further. And the Dutch had superior shipbuilding-, trade- and financing systems. Just one shipment in one ship of the line from Indonesia full of cloves sufficed to finance the whole of the English fleet, and every year there were over 250 of them coming back (Source: Samuel Pepys and, more recently, professor Schama in The Embarrasment of Riches.). The Glorious Revolution that deposed James II brought the English a Dutch king, William III, and he brought along with him the knowhow for ships, cannon, finance, far-flung trade. This made the English golden age possible, which lasted from about 1700 till 1940. It was a clever move by the English: if you can't fight them, join them. This is what they did. They did it in such a clever way that the Dutch faded away in history and the English become a world-dominant power, controlling 25% of all lands and populations. Of course, English long for the old days of yore. Till this day, the English at large have not come to terms with the new reality that they have become a second rate country, after USA, China and Japan, and, soon, after India and the EU. This is an extremely hard grind, especially for people born in families the trust funds of which hail back to exploits in the glorious old hay days, viz. people like Jacob RM, Boris J, and their ilk.

When you have servants who think it's awesome to be around you, dressing you (hence, no privacy) putting on your shoes (by then you can't bend to tie anything - well, shoes could come after the hose and before corset and other "stuff"). Dresses were in pieces (remember the Brits have awful cold weather, and layers were to keep you warm), so they had to be in some order! Geez!

i love how they have PRESERVED---their history ---the good, the bad, the ugly---warts and all......ALLLLLL the way back to when god said "let there be light." while america is in the process of tearing anything and everything down that IS PART OF HISTORY and labeled it all "offensive...." much in life CAN be offensive----let's do away with life too while we're at it. makes about as much sense. you have to see where you've been to know where your going....maybe nobody has "direction" anymore so....history is no longer needed....we can re-do the mistakes so we can do it allll over again----won't that be fun?

It's hard to take this seriously when the date of his reign is incorrect. Charles became king in 1660, not 1661.

They said he was declared king in 1660. She talked about him being declared king in in 1660, coming back to England and parading through London just before and on his 30th birthday which was in 1660 (there’s even a banner in the picture they show that says 1660). His coronation was in 1661. I didn’t even hear any of them say 1661 at all, I watched that part twice through when I saw this comment because I was curious if they did get it wrong, but I didn’t hear it personally.

You're wrong. They never said 1661. Try 16:40, where it's even on screen as 1660.
You should pay attention before slagging them for your own mistake.

Lord how I detest "re-enactments", the plague of modern-day documentaries and the antithesis of what film documentaries are supposed to be. A well-researched and written documentary has no need for them. And the "actors" appearing in these pointless "dramatic scenes" are obviously those who failed at a career in real films.
