    I bought Battle of Olympus in 1992 and completed it that summer just after graduating high school. Great memories, and I forgot how beautiful this game was until I watched this review. The backgrounds had so much appearance of depth. Yeah, that final battle was something special comparing to what we had at the time.

    This was my 2nd or 3rd NES game back then. The first "action adventure" game I'd ever played. Graphics, music, the open world... - blew me away. Writing down the passwords with all the upper / lower case letters and the weird font drove me insane though 😆

    • @quwebs
      @quwebs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, yeah the passwords were always a pain back then; thankfully with cell phones I can just snap a picture of the passwords now. I had SO MANY password pictures for this game 😂

    One of my favorites on the console. Greek Mythology was among the first genres that I read obsessively after I learned to read (predating even my love of horror/ghost stories, which Greek Myth probably led me towards), so this game was a natural choice for my NES collection. Its similarity to Zelda 2 was a bonus since I consider that game a guilty pleasure in one of my favorite (and oldest) game series.
    Also: the ability to flip yourself and walk on ceilings with Hermes' Sandals was mind-boggling to me as a kid, although thinking back, it was somewhat odd that I adapted to it so easily, even occasionally fighting mid-air enemies while upside-down with little trouble. I'd probably get destroyed if I tried it today.
    Thanks for the review!

      I was the same way with Greek mythology back when I was younger which I was inspired to read up on because of another NES game: Kid Icarus. Thank you for checking out my video LordSephleon! ❤️

      I'll stand with you and defend Zelda 2; it's my third-favorite NES game after Legacy of the Wizard and Esper Dream 2. Also, if you're into the obscure stuff, and looking for more gravity-flipping action, Kiteretsu Daihyakka (also for the NES) has such a mechanic; I know it's based on a comic or something, but it most reminds me of Yume Nikki turned into a 2D Platformer.

    • @LordSephleon
      @LordSephleon ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @quwebs Kid Icarus is a classic. Its mythology is definitely a bit more obscure in comparison, but it still is such an amazing game to this day. Hell, I didn't even learn the full mechanics "leveling" system until adulthood! Pretty awesome that you went down a similar path!
      @@MotherKojiro Ha! Always good to see another Zelda 2 fan! I mean, ALttP, Twilight Princess, BotW, and Zelda 1 are my top 4 in the series, but I replay Zelda 2 almost as much as I do the other SNES/NES ones just because it's a fun run.
      Legacy of the Wizard and Crystalis are two games that hold particularly special places for me as both always remind me of my grandparents (though in different ways). The first time I "beat" it, it was because the game glitched and the dragon woke up without me needing the rest of the crowns and Dragonslayer. It froze before the ending screen, so I had to work at finally beating it legitimately over time.
      I've never heard of Kiteretsu Daihyakka; kinda reminds me of Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle with its animations and music for some reason. I'll have to check it out.
      The only other NES game I remember that has gravity-flipping was... um... that sci-fi mecha game whose name I can't remember at the moment. It was one that I read about in the magazines all the time, but never got to rent/play.

      @@LordSephleon It was my favorite Zelda until I got into Wind Waker, and that dethroned it, but Adventure of Link is still geographically the biggest Zelda game ever made. Most of them stop with Death Mountain at the north, but this one starts so far north of Death Mountain that the usual Zelda area's just a tiny portion of the map, AND there's a second continent.
      Oh, Legacy of the Wizard was just as huge as it was cryptic; I couldn't tell you how many years it took me playing on and off to actually beat it start to finish, but it was at least a decade. Such an incredible world to explore, though.
      I can't be entirely sure, but I believe you're thinking of Adventures of Rad Gravity. Guy in a red spacesuit? GLORIOUS chin right out of an old Flash Gordon serial? Sound about right? If so, I did enjoy it, but the final boss is a pretty obnoxious curve ball.

    • @LordSephleon
      @LordSephleon ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MotherKojiro Wind Waker was also really enjoyable, probably my 5th favorite. I wasn't fond of the cell-shading graphics at first, but once I got my hands on it (on my then-new Gamecube, bought specifically for Wind Waker, Soul Calibur 2, and Eternal Darkness) and played it, I was hooked, especially since I loved its great controls and its focus on ocean exploration.
      Yeah, I didn't realize Zelda 2's geographical scope until my teen years (after LttP), when I replayed it at some point and it just kind of hit me. It was such an ambitious game in so many ways, that's for sure.
      It didn't take me a decade to finally finish Legacy of the Wizard without it glitching, but I definitely jumped from single-digit age to double-digit age, and not by a little bit. I was always able to get Xemn's and Meyna's crystals pretty easily (not to mention I loved the music in those areas), but Pochi's area was usually the one that gave me trouble. Lilia was also kind of a pain, but only because of her low attack power (and in my youth, I always felt the need to kill everything in my path, not just run by like I should have).
      Never heard of Adventures of Rad Gravity, but worth a look anyway since you bring it up, especially if it's got a character with a glorious chin... I'm a big Bruce Campbell fan. :D
      It was Metal Storm that I was thinking of; "Cybernator" was stuck in my head when I last commented, which I knew was not the correct game name, but I was sort of "stuck" there at the time. It hit me this morning, though. lol

      It really does have a lot in common with Faxanadu, but the moods are definitely different in my mind; to me Faxanadu has a dark and moody atmosphere while I think The Battle of Olympus is a bit more bright and colorful and lends to a more whimsical presentation. Both charming!

    A game called Battle of Olympus, that takes place in Tartarus (About as far from Olympus one can be) and has Orpheus as it's main character which is especially funny since that story has a depressing foregone conclusion. Also you made Cerberus sound like an Elden Ring boss with that blooper. "Cerberus, The Three-Headed". I never got the chance to play this one as a kid, which is a shame because I really enjoyed Zelda 2. Love your videos, thank you for what you do!

    This is such a great game; it's a little clunky, but it's an incredible journey with unbelievably beautiful and detailed environments. The bats are also an absolute marvel of software engineering; so many people complain about the bats and birds in Castlevania or Ninja Gaiden, but that's amateur hour compared to these. I also always think of that time my lady and I were up early shoveling snow on a Saturday morning before work, and the most beautiful sunrise broke out over the horizon; the colors were unlike anything I'd ever seen before... not that I've seen a lot of sunrises, since neither of us are morning people, but still, it was overwhelming. The ending music from Battle of Olympus pops into my head, and I said, "It's such a beautiful morning, and even though we're shoveling so early in the morning, I'm so glad to be here seeing thi-" she gives me this death glare. "Yeah, it sucks." At least it was cold enough that we didn't get attacked by bats.
