  • Martin Hammonds takes a day trip to the Millennium Dome. This is a perfect day to try out his new Camcorder.
    This footage has never seen the light of day. Pulled from the Martin Hammonds archive this is quite a detailed walk through of the The Millennium Dome Exhibition that was open for just a single year to celebrate the Millennium. Martins day out was on the 16th of Feb 2000.

    Something the critics at the time couldn’t understand was what it was like from a child’s perspective. I was 6 when I went and I just remember it being the most amazing, exciting place in the world. I still cherish the memories of visiting with my school, then my parents then my Nan. Incredible experience.

    • @ajs41
      @ajs41 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I visited about 4 times. I was 20 at the time. It was a good attempt to copy Disney's EPCOT Center in Florida, which I'd also been to a number of times. Not quite as exciting as EPCOT, but pretty good.

      Do you remember that film you watch at a desk and it’s about some girl and this magic tree that grows then after the film the screen went back/opened up and you walk through into the forest they created? That was cool.
      I also remember playing pong with paddles and a split room

    Wow, this is great. Thanks for uploading! When the Millenium Dome opened all the press slated it, so I never bothered to go and see it for myself. Near the end of the year my brother went and really enjoyed it, but I never did manage to make a visit. I regret it now.

    • @ajs41
      @ajs41 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The press hated it because on the night of 31st December 1999 they were all kept waiting in the cold outside Stratford or West Ham station because of a fault, and they hated everything to do with the Dome because of it. Totally irrational, but a true story.

      Interestingly Longplayer is written by Jem Finer from the Pogues. There's no real mention of that at Trinity Buoy. Perhaps Finer wanted to downplay that. I was 6 when I went, and was scared of the beating heart in the human body so had to leave that part of the attraction. I have this vimmed memory of a girl telling a true story in a short film about an apple tree growing into her house as it got so big. Then afterwards we went into a room where people met the real her and was talking to her for a bit. It was beautiful the lights and the fake apple tree they used to represent the real one. I don't remember anything else it's ashame I was too young to enjoy it and that it's all gone now so I can't revisit the place.

    I remember visiting aged 7. We didn't get into The Body experience as my parents told me there was a 4 hour queue. The real reason may have been so they didn't need to have 'The Talk' about the sperm scene! The capsule ride was the best, I remember going through the tornado was partially what inspired me to become a weather man.

  • @OdbodII

    This video must have been early in the year. I went during the final months and there wasn't a single queue. I walked around the body zone in a matter of a few minutes and went straight back in the entrance again because I thought I must have missed something. I hadn't.
    The BT zone was the worst, it was just one long, boring advert on how 'good it is to talk'.
    David Puttnam's school zone was the best exhibit for me, and this mainly consisted of a short movie. The zone pumped out the smell of boiled cabbage to add to the school atmosphere, but the smell lingered all over the dome. I kid you not.
    I was 36 at the time and from an adult's perspective it was an underwhelming experience. The oyster bar was the highlight for me personally. Those oysters were the best I've ever had.

  • @alistairmcelwee7467

    Thanks for posting. Interesting. I’m in London just for a month every 2-4 years to visit family & friends, so I was in London in late 1999 before this had opened, and then not until after it was closed, so missed it. Grrr. The dome was impressive, but thinking they could pull this together in such a short time with such an inexperienced team and too many cooks spoiling the broth at the political end meant that the chances of success were not great. It seems to have lacked a coherent vision. Also, the one year sunset plan seems to have mitigated against a more coherent and professional experience. I wonder whether the public was ever asked at the beginning what they thought a millennium exhibition should be about, or what they’d find interesting, or whether long term efforts to make them feel involved and engaged ever happened?

    • @visionist7
      @visionist7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I very vaguely remember a card questionnaire about the dome in 1999, we got hold of one at school I think, or I could be mixing it up with some other questionnaire from some other time. I remember us kids put "completely uninterested" as the answer to all the questions though 🤣
