As you might have noticed, I'm an Ohio State fan. That being said, I really love this new tradition at Iowa. You would never have convinced me that a "new tradition" wasn't more than a contradiction in terms without this story. From the games I have watched from there on television, the opposing TEAM waves, too, and why wouldn't they? You don't get the opposing team participating in stuff that the home team plans very often. Good for the Hawkeyes, their fans, and the (too many) children in that hospital (which is absolutely state of the art).
Funny to see your comment on here. I was actually just telling someone that I thought it was kind of cool that when Ohio State came to Iowa City a few years ago they went and tour that hospital. Matter of fact coach Meyer even said that some of his players were visibly upset and it bothered them into the next day. I know the Urban Meyer has a lot of negative stuff said about him but that man and his wife donated money to that place I always thought that was cool

Someday they will find this former Iowan passed away in this car of mine, but your video about the love and compassion of the people in my home state has brought temporary joy to my heart and has for a moment lifted my spirit. Through copious tears I write to you to thank you for showing my home state and the beautiful and positive things that everyday Iowans do. I still remember that kiss, my lips still remember that kiss! And I want to return that kiss to it's rightful owner before I die. Both Janey and I deserve a chance to see each other before I leave this mortal coil. Our love, though never officially documented by a marriage certificate, has survived many decades, many life changes, husbands for her, girlfriends for me since I've never been married, neither distances in geographical space, nor illnesses, and challenges too enumerable to count have dimmed our emotion---and eternal LOVE REMAINS between Janey and I. HA! Iowa is a rival team for me, as well. As a Husker, I am genetically disposed to hate all things Iowa, but "The Wave", always moves me. Much as it pains me to say it, Iowa, I salute you! Just kidding about the hate, of course, and it's things like this that I really love about college football.

YAY :) So glad u watched this! As an Iowa fan and someone with very serious health issues, it makes me and my whole family have chills. We all wear The Wave shirts, I advertise the wave on NBA 2K.
I was at this College Gameday at Virginia Tech. It was a really cool moment watching this clip, I cried a bit and I know other people did as well. This part of the show always has a segment that is supposed to tug at your heat strings and people joke that when they hear Tom Rinaldi's voice, they know that they are about to cry their eyes out. Despite that, it was still a special moment cause you know Tom is such a master at this. The scene where he doesn't even ask Kirk a question and just lets his emotions come through without any words was so powerful to watch. It was definitely something I was glad to experience in person.
This has become the greatest new tradition in sports. I'm an Iowa alumni, attended before they even broke ground on the UI Stead Family Children's Hospital, but I'm proud of my alma mater. EDIT: Since that started a few years ago, when the Hawkeyes travel to other venues, the home team and bowl games pick up that tradition and send their love to the kids at UISFCH.
I love that you reacted to this! Such an amazing tradition. I was honored to be in the stands when the first "wave" took place and it was just an incredible experience! Love my state of Iowa and I love my Hawkeyes! Go Hawks!
A lifelong IOWA fan and season ticket holder for 15yrs...I have been going to Kinnick for 35yrs and have seen some amazing moments in that stadium. Nothing compares to taking part in the WAVE...it is truly a moment that inspires and makes you put everything into perspective. GO HAWKS!!!!
As a member of Hawkeye Heaven and a die hard Supporter of the black and gold, THIS is something that so appreciate you shedding light on again. It’s bigger than sports, and boy does it make me cry every time I see those packages. Thank you for taking the time, and GO HAWKS!
Damn it Courtney, I was not planning on shedding tears today. So much for that idea. I was watching Wisconsin playing against Iowa when this started. While I was rooting HARD against Iowa on the field, but couldn't help up to shed a tear or 3 when watching back then, and looking back at it now. WONDERFUL tradition, thanks for reacting to this one, very cool.
Ah my alma mater Iowa, been there from 2008 to 2012 and miss it so much. I remember that hospital was under construction during my time there until the year after I graduated. Iowa City is such a wonderful place, full of kind and amazing people, and I'm glad that they created such a heartwarming tradition.
I am a patient at Hopkins Children's. I have congenital heart defects. This always makes me cry. My Baltimore Orioles have started a congenital Heart night for patients like me, our families, and medical team to be recognized. It's a really special night!
I was in iowa childrens hospital for a month and diagnosed with cushings disease if i wouldnt have went there i wouldve died. A life changing event i do thank iowa childrens hospital for helping me.
Hey, thanks for this video. I am from Iowa and Hawkeyes fan and love this tradition. Love that it is spreading across the world. Nothing but the best for you.
My son was at the Stead family hospital being treated for epilepsy. We got to go up and look down on the stadium,it was during the off season, but for a 3 year old just seeing something that big for Hawkeye fans is amazing. We go up every time he has an appointment and he doesn't mind going to the doctor's office anymore.
If Tom Rinaldi is narrating a video, I instantly reach for some tissue. Wisconsin Badgers fan here, and this is one of the best, if not the best tradition in the Big Ten.
When I first saw this I cried because they deserve love they are alone sometimes and to see 100,000 fans waving hello makes you wanna fight with all your might to keep going.
Good stuff! As I'm reading these comments, I almost get choked up. I know Hawkeye fans are a difficult group to love. I live 40 minutes from the stadium, and my son having Cystic Fibrosis, we've spent many many weeks at this hospital. Thanks again, and go Hawks!
I was there with North Dakota State in 2016. I heard about this sometime later and I felt so bad that I and no one in the band contributed... then I found out this started the year after and I felt relieved and kind of bummed. This is the best tradition I have heard of and I'd like to be a part of it. It's the least I can do for those in so much pain.
I was hospitalized for over 30 days on the 9th floor of this hospital over the summer. I sadly never got to experience this amazing thing. But I had a view of the stadium. This hospital, their child life is amazing (I am older than normal but the child life team did everything to keep me busy, keep me distracted and calm and not alone! Even during a pansemic) this tradition, it is all amazing!! It was hard since I was alone at the hospital. But it was so cool to understand and have a chance to see the stadium in that way. What is the most amazing, even on away games they will wave, even when they cant go to games they do it! Its now just a huge thing!!
I am an Ohio State fan and when they play at Iowa, it is always good seeing the support from the team and the fans for the kids. This is the BEST tradition in college football. Nice reaction
Damn Tom Rinaldi always making me cry. He's so good at that. Anyway, the Iowa Wave is the greatest tradition in all of sports. Nothing comes close. Sincerely, A Michigan fan.
Before Covid hit, I drove a lot of Uber and Lyft trios between the airport in Cedar Rapids, IA and the U of Iowa. A fair amount of families were coming to Iowa City with their children for treatments and they were very well informed about The Wave. Also, a fair number of visitors who had no connection to sports or the hospital knew of The Wave. One particular lady was here from Boston and as we made our way into the campus area, she saw the stadium and said "OH! Is that where the do the wave!?"
We look forward to every home game because we know at the end of the 1st quarter we wave to our tv along with the 70,000 inside the stadium. The time out between the 1st and 2nd quarter is allowed to go longer so that both teams and the refs can also wave. It's not just kids from Iowa in our hospital, so while you might not know who is there, it doesn't matter. Just knowing you are making some kids and their families smile for a bit of time, take their mind off of their illness for awhile is so worth it. Just a few days ago, my husband had an appt. in the regular hospital, and before going to our car in the parking garage, we went up to the top floor, something you hadn't been able to do since the pandemic, but it was finally ok to go up there again. It was so beautiful to see every seat in the stadium, and a bright blue sky made it possible to see for at least 12 miles into the distance. I feel so blessed to live in Iowa.
I’ve been going to the Iowa games sense this hospital was being built I was there for the first time it was so amazing just watching this all happen in front of my eyes
I’m a University of Iowa Alum. I was fortunate to participate in the first Wave in 2017. It truly is a humbling tribute to the kids fighting for their lives. I’ve lost a few loved ones to cancer in the past few years, it hits my heart to the core.
A catch phase used for the Hawkeyes is "Fight for Iowa". As much as it is for the team, fans and state, these kids are Iowa on Saturday. Saturday home games in Kinnick are a chance to remind those kids and families that they special to us and we will fight for them. They fight so hard every other day of the week to live and survive. We will never leave them to fight alone! The wave may be a small gesture, but it has the full heart of Hawkeye Nation behind it! We Fight for IOWA!!!
Proud of my home state. This shows that humanity still can feel empathy to others. Come to Iowa Courtney, we will show you why it's one of the most surprisingly friendly and supportive state in the Midwest!😊
As someone from Georgia and being a big Georgia Tech fan, I have nothing connected to this. But I think this is one of, if not the best tradition in college football. This is just a feel good moment and I hope all of the kids currently in that hospital stay strong. When it comes to this tradition, Go Hawkeyes.
I went to Iowa and during my time there the Hawkeyes had 4 great seasons and I even got to go to Miami to watch them win the Orange Bowl (thats one of the top bowl games at the end of the season) but I have never been more proud to be a Hawkeye than when the Wave started. The only thing I'm sad about is that I graduated before the tradition started
My home state. This fills me with great pride. I was there for the first wave and love that it is now part of the game. Even when not at the game be it staying at our party garage to tailgate watch the game or hanging out at a bar to watch it people will wave to the tv to be in supporting these kids and their families.
As a Native Iowan, born and raised about 30 minutes from the University of Iowa, I am so happy that you decided to pick this for a video. As you might have guessed, because of COVID-19, there are no football games this year. However, social media came through again and people from all around the area and the state did a "socially distanced" wave to the children at the Stead Family Children's Hospital! They are planning on doing this every Saturday when the end of the first quarter would've occurred. This is the first video of yours I have watched, and I think it is also the first "reaction" video to the Iowa Wave! Great video! I am so proud to be an Iowan because of things like this. On Iowa and GO HAWKS! :)
Iowan here. Iowa is a special place. Everyone is friendly and helpful. Neighbors look out and support each other. It really is a hidden gem. Go HAWKS 🖤
My own life story somewhat reflects what many of those kids go through, as I was born with a birth defect (spina bifida) and spent the first the first three months of my life in the hospital. Though I have never been to, or am I from, Iowa, but this is a great tradition which started out of a kind gesture.
I live near Iowa City. There has not been any football games yet this year, but there are people waving on Saturdays during what would have been gamedays!
Living in Iowa City and being in a Uof I family and being an Iowa fan basically my entire life, you have no idea how happy it makes me that you watched these!
This is a great new tradition in college football. I'm sure someone mentioned it in the comments already but another amazing story in college football recently was the story of Tyler Trent from Purdue.
I'm really glad you reacted to this!!! I was at the very first game that this tradition started. I don't think there was a dry eye at Kinnick Stadium. As I saw on an earlier comment, you are invited to an Iowa game to experience "the wave". You won't regret it. Here is another video you must watch th-cam.com/video/qzRKbd2uDFQ/w-d-xo.html
As someone who has had a child in the U of I Children’s Hospital and gotten to experience this words can’t even describe how special it is. It was a spark of hope that our family needed as our 6mo son fought for his life.

Keep fighting. From this soldier your the true hero. You need anything let me know Go For Broke.
I was in iowa childrens hospital for a month and diagnosed with cushings disease if i wouldnt have went there i wouldve died. A life changing event i do thank iowa childrens hospital for helping me.
Proud Hawkeye here. Especially with the new, greatest tradition.
This is why I'm proud to be an Iowan!
Live and die IOWA PROUD!
Hey, thanks for this video. I am from Iowa and Hawkeyes fan and love this tradition. Love that it is spreading across the world. Nothing but the best for you.
I moved to Iowa a couple of years ago and got to see this in person last year. It's very special. ♥️
Awesome! I was just searching to see if you'd reacted to this, was going to suggest it myself. Love this tradition.
You'll probably have to make a trip on your own for that one lol, after NDSU beat us I gotta imagine Iowa will not be hosting y'all again
Proud to live in Iowa City and proud to be a Hawkeye!
That's amazing for the kids and the football. Something I never new. It was a great happy story to hear and sad at same time.
Sincerely,
A Michigan fan.
It's such an amazing tradition...and to experience it in person is so moving.
It's a very special feeling be it able to take part in this tradition while at a game. I hope it never ends!
It’s okay to cry because just about everybody watching with you is crying too
awwww 🥺🥺❤️❤️
SO BEAUTIFUL..THANKS FOR NOT ONLY REACTING TO THIS CC BUT FOR YOUR EMOTION AS WELL.HOPE ALL IS WELL WITH YOU COURT///KENT IN OHIO
Thank you for playing the video! GO HAWKS!!!
As a iowa fan and a native Iowan I am glad u reacted to this.
I respect that highly; it made me tear up to Iowa fans from a Miami hurricanes fan. This was beautiful and heart-felt
It's one thing to see this on tv, but a whole new experience to be in the stadium and be part of it.
I love my Hawkeyes...but l love seeing the faces on the kids as the love is waved to them on Saturdays ..Best tradition in college football !!!
As one of the many people who were there the at the first ever wave this is my new favorite video! I’m so great full to be apart of it!
Was definitely an honor to be a part of the wave myself…it’s a touching moment for sure.
The part that makes me so happy is others who play Iowa on that day also do that stuff too when they r there
I went to Iowa and during my time there the Hawkeyes had 4 great seasons and I even got to go to Miami to watch them win the Orange Bowl (thats one of the top bowl games at the end of the season) but I have never been more proud to be a Hawkeye than when the Wave started.
Go HAWKS 🖤
Thank you for recognizing this.
Yes!!! I love football traditions. Everything is amazing honestly.
My own life story somewhat reflects what many of those kids go through, as I was born with a birth defect (spina bifida) and spent the first the first three months of my life in the hospital. Though I have never been to, or am I from, Iowa, but this is a great tradition which started out of a kind gesture.
I was at that very first wave. I am so proud to be a Hawkeye. Thank you for sharing this!
Took the family last year to see them play Rutgers. Was so happy to be apart of the wave. And I'll be doing once we can all come together again.
That is the PERFECT place to build a children's hospital! I Love It and all of those children!
Damn it 47 year old Maryland man here. Crying in bed watching at 2:30am.
i do love the Hawkeyes salute to the childrens hospital. even tho im a bucky fan but serios mad props to them. deep respect!
Your reaction is perfect Courtney...well said. God bless!!
Thank you! God bless!
