    • @kelragon1799

      Agreed hopefully she will do a more in depth redo, you can’t say “this plant eats anything that touches its two sensors, except for certain bugs.” And then end it on a cliff hanger like that. Loved it otherwise. Oh and she didn’t mention they need lots of sun light.

    • @ThePrufessa
      @ThePrufessa 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @anonymous 67 the question is once the pollinator is inside the plant *how does the plant know that it's not food?* Unless you can give me an answer to that question you do not need to respond with information that has nothing to do with what I'm asking. I don't care how they found the plant. I want to know how the plant tells the difference between a pollinator and food.

    • @ThePrufessa
      @ThePrufessa 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @anonymous 67 ok, sooooooooo *how* does the sticky substance know the difference between food and pollinators? This still doesn't answer my question. Why does food get stuck and pollinators don't get stuck? How does a sticky substance with no brain tell the difference between food and pollinators?

    for those curious about how they close it's by what we call a positove thigmotropic response. Where the plants reacts to touch (thigmo) stimuli. The water and ions within the cells rapidly rush to the walls of the cells when touch is detected which causes the fly trap to close. After some time the response wears off and the cells return to normal going from turgid to flaccid.

    I have a bog where I grow pitcher plants, Venus flytraps, and bog orchids. Bog plants are so easy to care for.

    I got one of these as a kid, as well as a pitcher plant, but my climate was extremely arid and it was impossible to keep the humidity high enough without specialized equipment.

    How can a fly dodge a fast slap, but gets trapped by that super slow close.

    One tip I heard from a farmer once was: use coconut straw under the soil for small plants (I dunno if it applies to this cuties but it wouldn't hurt to try), this prevents it to dry too much.
    I'd love to see an episode on Mangrove plants like Rhizophora mangle. It's amazing how a plant can survive in salted water and my country is full of them

    From what I heard you should also allow venus flytraps to undergo a frost dormancy ideally every year but a max of two for them to live for a longer time. You could even do it in your fridge.

    Always thought it was named after the Birth of Venus since the leaves look like sea shells. But calling someone stupid is legit too.

    One thing you did not say, is that if Venus Fly Traps are planted in nutrient rich soil they lose their trap appendages. If you then move them to nutrition deficient soil, they grow them back.

    UGH! I really wanted a venus flytrap for my home, but because my house is so dark, I knew it wouldn't be happy. When I move, I'll make sure I have a really sunny window and get one of these little guys to add to my growing plant collection!
