Whoever thought it would be a good idea to add loud static noise and white interference that not only is a distraction at key points during Rimmer's impersonations of the crew (throwing the timing completely off) but serves as a jumpscare when you're not expecting it is a total smeghead.
The original was definitely just fine. I hate the CG they added to some of the episodes. Star Trek episodes on Netflix have CG which is a shame. The original effects should have been left as they were. Adds no value.
The only thing I liked about the remastered versions of Red Dwarf was the beautiful artwork on the VHS covers! This scene was fine as it was in my opinion and to add that interference effect on Rimmer during his 'shuttle was late' speech just messed it up completely!

If they were going to add those annoying glitchy CG effects, they might as well gone the whole hog and made him monochrome, like they originally planned, but they didn't have the budget to.
Whoever added those annoying effects, I'd love to strap them down in a chair Clockwork Orange style, and force them to listen to the squeal of a 90s internet connection for several days non-stop.
A good scene rendered unwatchable by the remastered effects. I remember buying the remasters on video and had mixed feelings. Some bits were good, but then there were these ones which ruined the scene completely. I only ever watched them once. I’m not sure if they were intended as a poke at George Lucas’ endless fettling of Star Wars, but I don’t care. Stop fixing what isn’t broken!
They ruined Red Dwarf when they went back and added all that extra crap like the glitching when Rimmer is talking etc 😕 Like s1e01 where they messed with the "Everybodies dead Dave" section, its just not as funny now 😕 Good thing I still have s1-6 on VHS :-D, gonna have to digitize them I think 🙂
Huh, the special effects add a creepy underlayer to he scene, really driving home Rimmer isn't human or even alive. A lot of people don't like the effects, but I think if the were done better (and not so weirdly LOUD) it would have been better accepted.
If red dwarf is so good, then why are there only tiny clips like this and not complications like other comedies, like IT crowd or Always sunnyin Philadelphia, is this show that unbearable that you can't get by between the jokes? Or is there only 1 joke per episode worth sharing?
What a way to ruin a hilarious classic scene with crappy, distracting effects. So glad i still have the first 6 seasons on DVD as they were originally released.
This scene has been turned into garbage. Cheap special effects overlaying the comedy just ruins this scene just like all the rubbish in the special editions of the Star Wars films. Who EVER came up with this knows NOTHING about comedy.
Chris Barrie reads the Red Dwarf audiobooks and his impressions of the characters are spot on, Lister especially.

Chris Barrie was a professional impressionist, he used to do voices for the TV show SPITTING IMAGE of various British celebs and politicians

Red Dwarf can only have one hologram aboard the ship. That would mean Rimmer would have to be switched off, so the Cat hologram can be generated.
I think it's a plot hole.
Sometimes, the writing and continuity was bad. It's possible, Cat's personality was uploaded prior to "Queeg".
That could had killed Lister at 2:36.
