Drunken Woodworker I was a bit surprised though how quickly the wood dried out afterwards. I swept the snow off in the morning, cut the boards, and put them in my shop near the radiator for the rest of the day and night and they were ready to go the next day with very little cupping and warping.
Once again you have come up with not only a great video, but a project that pushes the boundaries of what can be done on a very small budget. As always, its a pleasure watching you work. Here's wishing you a happy and safe new year filled with joy and more great projects.
johnnie52 Thank you. I had been wanting to do a bat for a long time, and after hearing *****'s challenge and acquiring a few pallets, I had to say why not.
dana smith Thanks, Dana. The baseball bat was a really fun project and one that I have been wanting to do for sometime now. I might even make one out of ash next time.
Steve Carmichael Thanks, Steve, it was a lot of fun building it too. I had wanted to do a bat for a while ... and then an opportunity presented itself.
Chris Pine It was actually a lot simpler than I thought. I did get nervous a few times working in the middle and there was a lot of vibration. I really need to see about getting a stabilizer if I'm going to do anything that long again.
oldman719 I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've had my fair share of frustrating moments while turning, which is probably why I don't do it all the time. Like with anything though, it takes practice and watching a lot of turning videos on TH-cam.
So at least now i know it can be done. I tried turning a pallet glue up for the challenge, too. Mine flew apart. The glue wouldn't hold. No more cheap glue for me. I got lucky as the pieces didn't hit me. It happened today, so no more fix time, end of project. It would've been a nice candle stick holder for large candles. Its a nicelooking bat you turned there. Would it take the brutal force of a pro game? Thanks for sharing!
Willem Kossen Luckily my first glue-up didn't shatter on the lathe, but I hadn't given it enough time to dry and it curled apart. The second one I was concerned a few times, especially when doing the center, there was quite a bit of vibration. I'm pretty sure the new carbide-tipped chisels I was using played a significant role in having this project be a go.As for standing up to a real baseball, probably not. I didn't have a lot of choice in grain patterns and mixed woods. I think there was a slate or two of maple but I think the rest was poplar. It's very light and just didn't want to even try putting a real baseball to it. Great for soft rubber and wiffle balls though!
Terrific idea for pallet wood. I do have one question. What kind of planar are you using. Maker & size to be more specific. Merry Christmas FR. Thomas. Marty
harley75us I will be away from that shop for a couple of weeks so I can't be specific until I'm back there. I know it is a Delta planer, and I think it has a 14" or 15" capacity.
Hi Thomas my name is Raymond Náter from Puerto Rico island. I liked a candlestick holder and very nice. I'm cabinet maker teacher and professional woodworking.
Andrew Arndts Believe it or not the only bat regulation I'm breaking with this bat is the sub-section of 1.10a that requires, "The bat shall be one piece of solid wood." All those pesky regulations, foiled by MLB again.
Nice job on the bat and the tune was catchy and soothing!
Ron Briz The tune was a folk piece from the Ozark Mountains called, "Bright Morning Stars Arising," performed by Jon Sayles.
Cool project
Excellent job on the bat.
Regards,
Bob
Great Job .. You made something everyone can enjoy not just woodworkers.
Custom Chris Thanks, Chris, I figured there would be a few people that enjoyed baseball.
Awesome idea!
A fun piece nicely done!
Tom
All fine furniture begins with sweeping snow off it. TRUE!!

Thanks for the past year sharing your work! Merry Christmas to all of you!
MRrwmac My pleasure, it gave me a 'reason' to get out in the shop a few times. Blessed Christmas to you.
Very nice project. You're a great pitcher too.
Nick Ferry All those years of Little League pitching finally paid off.
That looks great. Merry Christmas Fr Thomas.
Great project, and the movie would be The Natural with Robert Redford. Thanks for sharing, and keep up the great work!
dana smith Thanks, Dana. The baseball bat was a really fun project and one that I have been wanting to do for sometime now. I might even make one out of ash next time.
The burning adds a nice touch. Good looking bat Fr Thomas. Thanks.
AdventuresInDIY I had recently watched "The Natural," so I couldn't pass up the opportunity.
Excellent...
Cheers, merry Christmas...
Great idea, Fr. Thomas. "Turned" out great!
Awesome Baseball Bat Fr Thomas, Thanks for Joining in, Got you added, and Best Of Luck
***** Thanks again, Sterling, for hosting it. It was a lot of fun.
Very nice! Well done.
Very enjoyable video to watch. It's amazing that bat came from a pallet. I'd like to try that sometime. Good work!
Steve Carmichael Thanks, Steve, it was a lot of fun building it too. I had wanted to do a bat for a while ... and then an opportunity presented itself.
Very cool, nice job. The bat looks great. Have a good Christmas
You just hit a home run. Good project, good luck in the challenge.
Built by Bill I'll settle for a single, and thanks for watching.
You're a Natural! :) Great Project!
Peter Brown Thanks! Now if I can only figure out a way to make it all from EPOXY!
Beautiful!!!
Best wishes for happy holidays

LOVE IT! I'm going to have to make one of these for the summer!
McGinn's WoodShop Why wait? I'm sure there have been a few games of snow baseball played.
Never seen that pallet project before, good job.
Cheers
Tim from wood 4 nothing
La votaste de Home Run con el bate, pero bateando te ponchaste jajaja, buen trabajo te felicito
And some people see only square things when it has 6 sides.... see only the dimension of the surface. Great project!
Não Só Serradura Thanks, Gerrit. That's part of the reason why I like your channel, I always get something unexpected.
I always thought it would be a fun project to turn a baseball bat! Yours looks great!
Chris

Very impressive. I have tried turning but get frustrated. Thank you for a good video.

José Antonio Oliveira Blessed Christmas to you, too.
So at least now i know it can be done.

Raymond Nater Glad you enjoyed the video, Raymond. As a woodworking teacher do you ever provide tutorials online?
Very Nice Father! Merry xmas and Happy new year !JOE
joesjigs Thank you, Joe. And a blessed Christmas and New Year to you as well.
How durable was your bat? Did you try it out any?
Being laminated, I wouldn't use it for anything more solid than a tennis ball.
Everyone needs a continuity guy. Are you waiting for Bull Durham 2 to be made?
The Nomadic Polywright Show Sure, if they ever need someone to play a worn out old high school 3rd basement I'm their man.
No,no provide tutorial online .
You'll be Hitting Wiffle Ball Homers in No Time!
I don't think MLB would approve of a bat crafted as such BUT that isn't an issue in Amateur settings.
Andrew Arndts Believe it or not the only bat regulation I'm breaking with this bat is the sub-section of 1.10a that requires, "The bat shall be one piece of solid wood." All those pesky regulations, foiled by MLB again.
Sorry my apologies.
