In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you a simple and universal chess opening against the Sicilian Defense (Anti-Sicilian), which arises after 1.e4 c5- the most popular and highest-scoring response to White's first move, 1.e4.
The drawback of playing the mainline (2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3) is the extensive opening theory knowledge required. Playing against variations like the Najdorf, Dragon, Scheveningen, and Classical demands a complete opening preparation.
That's why GM Smirnov recommends 5.f3, known as the Prins Variation. By delaying the development of your queenside knight, you can play c4, establishing a rock-solid pawn structure in the center that restricts Black's pieces.
The beauty of this variation lies in its systemic nature; you can play the same set of moves regardless of Black's response. Most importantly, you can avoid the complexities of Sicilian Defense opening theories and surprise your opponents with this secret sideline!

Right when I needed to learn something against Sicilian defense, this channel is really helping me improve at chess.
Also, I like how almost all of the openings on this channel include pushing f pawn in the opening,
Great!

Oh yeah, the graphics are pretty Kool too.
This opening helped me beat an 1800 rated player.
Are you also 1800?
This opening helped me beat a 3500 player.
@@anonymous123456on he's actually 2400
because he was playing whatever, like said in this video, lol
I reached 2000 rapid today for first time 🎉📈
There is a way for Black to avoid the Maroczy Bind in this opening: 5. ... e5 6.Nb3 d5. It doesn't solve all of Black's problems but it is better than having to play against the bind. The Position at 3:19 is similar to a position that I get to often in the Alapin Sicilian line: 1.e4 c5 2.c3 d6 3.d4 Nf6 4.f3 cxd4 5.cxd4 g6. I do very well in those sorts of positions.
The Maroczy Bind is not as bad as you think it is. I had some chick in the Maroczy bind last nite. But, yeah in chess it kind of sucks.
Smirnov actually uploaded two videos on this variation back in 2012. They go more in-depth. It’s nice to see that he made a new video on it though!
Clear and precise. Favorite GM teacher ever..., ✌🏾
Thanks, this will help me a lot!
Keep doing the good work.
I am an Alapin player,But Started playing Grand Prix Attack after you made video on it. Now,Will try this one too.
Chess is fun when we have a coach like you.
Very nice line Igor - going to try this!
Great video as usual, I'm going to try this out.
At 10:25 white can win a Queen too by going Ne6, then recapturing with the other Knight.
true knightmare... very good one.
Hi 🙂 I enjoy your videos very much! Could you record one showing how to counter Nimzo-Larsen as Black if White plays it? Thanks in advance!
@GMIgorSmirnov, Love the idea, but what "AVOID THEORY" response do you have to 2... Nc6? It's the most common move until titled level, and looks like we still need to know all the theory for Classical, Sveshnikov and Accelerated Dragon lines?
What should black do against the prins variation
This set-up is most fascinating! I've never seen anything like it. Thanks Igor!
I kinda remember Fischer letting the King stroll. Except this was a "manual" castle.
For the king walk, see Tigran Petrosian v Wolfgang Unziker, Hamburge 1960.
I wrote that down. It should be great.@@divine6104
ah man, deadly! love it
U are so good one of the top chess teaching channel ❤u deserves more subs and views and hope this is the year for u❤❤❤

5...e5 6.Nb3 d5 7.Bg5 d4 = ,there is always a reason why minor lines like this isn`t played very often.
Can you create an opening crash course on the Trompwsky Attack?
Many thx for this great line against the Sicilian. One question: Is there also a line if black plays 2. --/Nc6? which is also a common move in the Sicilian. Thx in advance.
MY FAVOURITE OPENING
What should I do when black plays Nc6 early in the game attacking my knight on d4? Should I trade them off, move my knight to b3 like when attacked by the e pawn or should I defend it with my dark squared bishop and queen? When I used analysis the engine was very indecicive what to do...
Hi Igor, I had played Alapin but had problem winning, also tried Grand Prix spending much time learning all the lines, still struggling winning against Sicilian. Seems today people are trying to avoid the normal, common lines and instead play the rarest lines they can find, like moves only played 1-4% of all games in attempts to take you out of prep totally, and confuse. Happens so often. Most common moves, not so common anymore.... Any tips how to handle that?
Thanks for this, needed something to counter Sicilian....loving these videos from India ❤
❤
What if Black does not commit to d6 (e.g. e6, Nc6, g6)? Do you have any recommendations?
Perfect.. ive been playing this guy and all he plays is the sicilian and know the basic stuff
Omg ! This lines are a far better than my anti Sicilian Grand Prix attack ! Thank You Igor ! Love it ;)
Igor has another anti sicilian which is even more effective. Learn both you"l have alot of fun.
Hi there. Do you mean gambit Smith-Morra ? Kind regards ;)

...adding to previous comments, how to respond to Nc6 once your knight is on d4...should you take as white?
I think this option is not covered here. Thanks anyway for your videos.
Reached 2000 rapid for the first time ever today🎉📈
Nice! Great work
hey igor this variation lost me on move6 after e5 as my opponent sacked on e4 and my oppponent crushed me with Qh4
As a sicilian player I hate this c4 system and hence this video.
What happens when black responds with d5
I miss your office background and the cat is sleeping on the table bring it back on the next vid
instructions unclear, pre moved 10 moves made coffee came back checkmated
Not a bad system, but i always castle queenside iin the Sicilian and pawnstorm their king, especially if they play king's Indian style
Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
Premove your 10 moves opponent plays e5 lost my knight
POV : you premoved your bishop to c4
I pre moved my next ten moves while I got my coffee and was down 16 points of material
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 d6 5. f3 Qb6 6. c4 Nxd4
Let’s just say it got much worse from here 😂
0:35 Ben Finegold does not approve
90% of players play Nc6 as their second move in the sicilian...
But then I have to disobey Ben feingold...
He stole my main opening vs the Najorf :(
Sad
Been losing games as black lately
You've got to embrace your darkness😂
Igor, I appreciate your videos but.. you just cannot help players who play bad chess. I have watched hours and hours of your teachings and cannot even understand what is going on.
I have passively played (very bad)chess since I was six or seven years old.
After an extreme hiatus, I downloaded shredder classic 5.
Needless, even with it set at 1200 eol and your crazy videos - I cannot win. Like ever. I do good just moving pieces.
*Shrug* in the end, I feel some people cannot be helped.
