I had my first dog when I was 8, he grew up with me for 15 years.
After I was enlisted into military service, and had to be in the boot camp for 3 months, my mom told me he waited at the door all the time for 2 more months and passed away 13 days before I was released from the camp.
I am 66 years old and hope very much that I can meet him again soon.

This is the epitome of wholesomeness. Every kid needs to grow up with an animal, to teach them early on about empathy, patience, and so, so much more lessons.
Some parents aren't fit for pets. They're abusive.

I am glad to see a young child being careful with their pet. A real responsible parent who teaches her child about treating animals the right way and enjoying eachothers company in a fun and respectful way

In my family, it has been a tradition for at least 4 generations that when a baby is born into the family, we also get a puppy to raise together with the child as co-responsible friends. It's a great way to learn to love, share and look after one another. My dog was a Wire-Haired Fox Terrier named Scooter. My sister had the sweetest, gentlest German Short-Haired Pointer named Tweed, one brother had another German Short-Haired Pointer named Smokey, my other brother had a Golden Labrador Retriever named Ginger, my cousin had a Highland Collie named Bonnie. Our older son had a black-and-gold Cocker Spaniel named Bima (Lion), while our younger son had a stray mixed breed dog that, as a tiny puppy, wandered into our house compound (we live in a rural mountainous area) on the day we brought our son home from the hospital and just stayed on. His name is Lucky.
I hope this isn't an invasive question but I'm considering doing the same for my child and you seem like you'd know better than anyone.
When the dog eventually passes away do the kids handle it okay? I'm afraid getting one too soon might make the blow more painful
Wow, that is so cool! You are lucky to have grown up in a family with so many members with paws, and such a cool mindset. I love that each of you had your own dog. I wanted a dog my whole life, but my family didn't get one until I was 18 and soon to move out of the house. I loved that dog with all my heart, though. And I got the chance to spend a lot more time with him in his last years alone, just the two of us, on a cabin in the woods, and bonded on such a deep, telepathic level that I can truly say that he was my best friend. No one seemed to understand me the same way that I felt that he did. His name was Dennis, and he was a beautiful, free-spirited soul.

At first it's horrible and honestly not only for the kid, it will be very painful for you too. But later it becomes some of your best memories :)

Yeah. The mom says that having Elvis taught Ted how to be compassionate, but it's really his mother who taught him to be so gentle. There are too many parents that overlook the importance of being gentle towards animals and let their kids manhandle them.
It's nice and good for Ted to learn responsibility. Elvis takes care of Ted and Ted, older, takes care of Elvis. No doubt, they are brothers !

You can see the care they both have for each other. It is so refreshing to watch a baby and a dog properly interacting with no "power' play and the and completely relaxed in all the clips. Bravo ! This soothe my heart. I wish them a very long and healthy friendship. Good job by the parents. As I had my dogs almost 10 years (they are in great shape) I will soon be a mom... This is what I hope and will work towards...my boys are everything to me.

Black labs, gotta love their sweet, devoted personalities! Animals can indeed teach children. When my nephew was potty training, he saw the cats peeing in the litter box. When his diaper was removed, he ran from the bathroom and peed in the litter box located in another room!

Dogs love pacifiers! My daughter was forever giving the dog her pacifiers when she was little! I kept the steriliser running constantly and was forever replacing the ones the dog had got and chewed!
Edit to add - the little monkey knew fine well she wasn’t supposed to give them to the dog - she would hold it in her hand over the edge of her highchair/ crib and I would say ‘no- don’t drop it - dodos are for babies not puppies!’ then she would let go and giggle her little heart out! Baby laughter is the best! Her first word was ‘puppy’ not Mummy or Daddy and 12 years later she is like a little pied piper - wherever she goes our dogs follow!

This is just plain precious. Ted must have been surprised at preschool to see other children who didn't carry toys in their mouths or eat grass! Anr no one taught them to sit or lay down on command! He felt so thankful that Elvis was teaching him the right ways. I pray for many happy, loving years for little Ted, Brother Elvis, and their wonderful family ❤😊

I hope I’m not the only one but my heart just melted when that little boy was wiping the mud off the dogs paws and the dog was just accepting it , it reminds me of when my childhood cat would come in from being caught in the rain and I would instantly rub her with a clean towel because I knew how much she hates being wet
