I'm a little late posting this, but here goes..
A little over a year ago (January 8, 2021), an important name passed away.
Mr. Q (James McGee) was the first Canadian rapper, and he released some of the earliest commercial rap songs in history, starting with "Ladies Delight" in 1979, the same year as the other first commercial rap songs (before 1979, Hip-Hop music was just a performance art at block parties and club gigs). His song was also one of the earliest diss songs:
"Now I heard about Sugar, I heard about Hill, and let me say they got no skill."
Mr. Q was born in New Jersey, but later moved to Toronto to work as a musician. He spent most of his career as a singer, but he pioneered Hip-Hop in Canada.
This post is both an homage to a deceased OG, as well as a shout out to Toronto, the oldest Hip-Hop scene outside of East Coast USA.
