My first memory of madeley was in 1961 .I was 5 years old then and I lived in Coalbrookdale and I went shoping with my granny every saturday .when I was 14 I got my first weekend job working at key markets fridays saturdays and shelf filling on sundays when the shop was closed in those days .I met my first ''propper' girlfriend at Woodside disco who lived in Madley . I went to the Abraham Derby school when my familey moved to Woodside around the same time. I still live in woodside now and Madeley is within easy walking distince .I have seen all of the changes happen in this area not all for the best .But the sadist part I find is the decline of Madeley market which now constists of 3 stalls and a dog on a good day .All in all tho it's been a great place to grow up in for myself and my familey.

Great and informative video. I left in the early 90's. Went back on a few visits and appalled at what Madeley has become. Bastardised by a corporate brand "TESCO" and it's ripped the heart from the community. It was the epicentre for all to meet, play and be a nuisance to the shoppers on Saturdays at the Market dropping devil bangers on them from the library spiral ramp. It was cutting edge...now it's just mediocre and that's being polite. They ripped the Merc down too (sacrilege).

Thanks for a great series. Madeley episode my favourite as I spent many a happy time as a child at the "Court Centre" Left Telford 27 years ago but remember it's infancy growing up there in the 70's.

I preferred it the way it was. When we moved to Sutton Hill in 1970 I was 4 yes old, I still remember how exiting it all was, it was like moving into the future for us kids.
I loved the spiral walk way up to the library, and remember there used to be a scale model of the precinct in glass case , on display.
It looks rather ' barren' now🤔

progress 9 times out of 10 is not for the better of the people its for the better of corporate developers, the same games been played for years, in 15 years or less all the new built stuff will be purposely neglected financially then 5 to 10 years after that it will be "not fit for for purpose, at winch point Councillors and there friends that own development/building will sit in a freemason lodge together and strike a deal that benifits them and off they go again, round and round, like a record baby

Excellent film. I thoroughly enjoyed it well done and you have used one of my original photographs. I particularly liked the opening shots of Telford, such a lovely town. I do feel though that Madeley suffered the worst of all of the towns and villages in the conurbation of Telford. The original Madeley with it's rows of shops before the first Madeley Centre was much better than that awful monstrosity that was built in the late 60s.

Telford Plaza! I worked on elements of that in the early 90s…….does it have tenants now?
