The wait is over, and my review of the new Lagom Casa is finally here. This uniquely designed, conical burr, single-dose grinder is focused squarely at the entry-level market, but does it live up to the quality, build and brew standards of the Option-O line-up? Today, we find out.

That out of center catch cup would trigger my inner monk too hard. 😂
Finally!!! Excited to watch this 😁
Cheers! Thanks for watching!
I was waiting for this review: I'm sold. I'm gonna buy one
Great videos! I so appreciate your short and sweet, to the point style! How would you compare this to the DF64V and even Gen2 in general, for primarily espresso with a bit of pour over. I was looking at the V for my next, but this has my attention now, mostly because of build quality and reputation.
At this price range, nice alternative to df64, Oro SD, varia vs3
Yeah it’s definitely aimed at the entry level range, and I think it’s definitely a proper deal considering what it offers.
Thank you for the video. Looks wise, I like the front and front three quarter views but not so much the side profile, Would work well in my space, Usage cycle would not be an issue in a one or two person setting I feel. No Power Brick !!!! An attractive addition to their range.
I think this grinder will be my collection. Thank you for your review.
It’s a solid contender, and a great addition to most collections!
Thank you for the great review! I have a few questions:
1. What is the typical humidity where you are? I'm in a very dry area and am curious if I might be able to get away w/o RDT (I never have before).
2. Does the catch cup center perfectly? Is there a risk of it scratching the base or is there some padding? If you wanted to grind directly into a portafilter, how might you go about doing it?
3. Do you know anything about the design/availability of the 64/65mm version? It looks like the entire grind chamber would have to be different to accommodate a significantly larger burr set.
Thanks again for your awesome reviews! I love your channel.
Awesome review man as always, really considering this as my first grinder. Is this a good all rounder grinder for first time usages ? I am drinking mostly espressos, would make both black and milky drinks. I also don't want too much acidity in my coffee for black, i like those texture, body, sweet notes in the coffee.
Just based on the sound picked up by your mic, I don't love the sound of the motor on this one. It's got a bit too much of a high-pitched whine. I have the Niche Zero and its low-pitched rumble, though fairly loud, is at least inoffensive to my ears. I think this is going to be heavily influenced by personal tastes though. Some people are going to be much more annoyed by high-pitched sounds than others. It does seem like this one may offer a bit more clarity and better filter brews than the Niche but perhaps not enough to justify a "cross-grade." For folks who already own a legacy conical it still seems like the path is to upgrade to a higher-end flat
I have a lagom mini and the morning routine has changed the game for me, having upgraded from a Baratza Preciso. Mini is so quiet comparatively. I think sometimes these decibel tests do not translate well over video on TH-cam, but everyone has a preference.
I can say it’s definitely got a bit of mechanical whine to it, so I get you. It’s not my favorite sound, but the slower RPM makes it a little less jarring than those high speed flats with the same/similar sound.
@@ToddParkerI have a Mini as well and the motor in the Casa sounds exactly the same in the video from what I could tell
@@Sprometheusdoes it actually sound different than the Mini since you have both? It sounds like same to me based on the video
Price should be the forefront of reviews. Very much my pet peeve when I have to go searching for it.
Well I think it should be considered that in this case, and some others, the info on price isn’t firmed up and often only ranges are provided.
And as someone who spends weeks, or in some cases months working on reviews my pet peeve is mentioning the price right off and then just having angry comments after watching 1/4 of the video as if I have any control of that, and I haven’t even gotten to the point where a price can be even be justified or nullified.
@@Sprometheus I'd accept a range/equivalent machines. However if it is cheaper than another machine but performs equivalent/better then that would be a key part of any review. Comes down to if you would buy it or not.
Great prices on both grinder burr sizes. I'm sure it'll be a big seller.
It’s a long (3-day) Bank Holiday weekend here in the UK. Not sure if you have something similar, Stateside? Either way, hope you have a wonderful weekend.
Thank you my friend.
Which grinder do you recommend for a first time owner: Lagom Casa or Timemore Sculptor 064S?
l like no plastic and heavy base. i can see myself flicking that knocker more than necessary. hope you can get one those Pinion pinecones for review, would like your feedback on that on. thanks for good video as always
Man that high pitch sound is a deal breaker for me. Wish they would have bump the price up just a bit to compete with the niche. Probably would have went for it. Been looking for something with a different flavor profile for my niche for about a year but want to stay conical.
Great review, I was looking forward to this one! It feels as though they were aiming to fix the flaws of the mini (power brick, weak motor) and it seems they have knocked it out of the park while adding a few more features. 👌Bit of a shame about the duty cycle, but I can't imagine many people will come anywhere near to grinding that amount of time in one session.
Only thing I can think of is grinding large amounts of beans for cold brew?
@@loganmontgomery1955 possibly! Or seasoning a grinder.
Fantastic value for money - like you said, a worthy option as first grinder, if you digg the looks.
But honestly - I just want to hear more about the Philos production unit you have sitting on your bench 🤣
Thanks for the review! Have you heard anything on when it will be available? On Tuesday they updated the site page only to say there's delays.
I haven’t yet, I’ll definitely ask them what the new timeline is. I think they are making a few small tweaks after the feedback from me and other beta testers and prepping the 65mm set which I didn’t have yet.
@@Sprometheus Appreciate it! They did add the price to their website so seems like they're ramping up. Great content as always, appreciate it!
Thanks for another great review. Separately, I will be in the Seattle area for a week starting from this Monday (May 6). I can’t remember where, but I got the impression you were out that way. If you work in a coffee shop locally or are otherwise publicly available, would love to swing by and say hello. Either way, thanks again and keep up the great work.
Well I actually live in Southern California, but you won’t be lacking for options in Seattle. Personally I love Anchorhead, Analog, Elm Street, Olympia, and Espresso Vivace for that classic cafe experience.
@@Sprometheus Sorry, not sure why I thought Seattle, but thank you for the recommendations nevertheless!
Try Hagen in Seattle. Newer (within the last 5ish years) and one of my favorite roasters anywhere
@@sporefan33 Awesome, thanks for the recommendation. Just arrived a few hours ago, so I’ll try to give it a shot today!
How do you choose between the smaller and the larger burr size?
Is this the same dosing cup that goes with the Option-O O1 flat burr grinder? Currently using the P100 (but eventually planning to upgrade to the O1 once it goes through a couple revs to improve noise and whatever) and love it but also looking for a style-compatible end game conical to push my key off the shelf. Ultimately I want end game conical and flat burr grinders they look like they belong together and with entirely compatible workflows on the bar. You mention this is entry level but do they have a end-game conical similar to this? This does seem a little slow and loud for espresso. I think the 65mm you elude to is what i'm looking for.
I have a Lagom p100 and It feels like overkill for my traditional 1:2 ratio espresso shots. I mostly pull medium roast blends. Considering doing a major downgrade to something like this. Did you get the chance to pull other roasts other than light? I have always drank light roasts via drip and medium roasts via espresso.
How are you getting your grind size with the DiFluid Omni? I never get consistent readings on mine, especially as you approach 200nm.
Thanks for this! One thing I couldn't quite be sure of from the review is if it's possible to go from espresso to pour-over grind settings in a single rotation of the dial or if it's necessary to go past the zero point one or more times. I often switch brew methods and expect I'd find having to use multiple rotations tedious since it'd be hard to know where the grinder was set without going back to the zero point and starting again.
If it is like the Lagom Mini, which I own, I can confirm that Option-O says the filter range on this Mini is 1.2-1.5 - 10 total dots, so 1.2 would be 1 revolution and then to the second dot and so on. They also say espress0 is .5 or less. The french press they say is 2.0-2.5. This is all based on their Moonshine burr, which I have and seems to be the same Burr in the Casa. So, if you are going from espresso to french press you are multiple revolutions away. If you are going from filter to espresso, depending on how coarse your filter grind is, you may be within 1 revolution. The only caveat is the new Moonshine burr design...knowing Option-O has different recommendations on the mini between their Obsydian and Moonshine burr sets, their recommendations on the CASA may be different than what I just detailed.
How would you compare this to the Timemore 064S? I’ve got one of those on the way but this is my first grinder and I don’t yet know what I like and don’t like about it… pretty much anything, including flat vs conical burr profiles, workflow, or noise profile
I wonder what’s better for light roasts, conical or flat burrs?
please do a comparison with the mini
I’m in that category of considering a conical to pair with my flat (Zerno with Cast v2 burrs). How does something like this compare to the Cast v2 flats? How about the Kafatek Shurikones? I’ve heard those go about as sweet as you can get.
The fact that you mentioned "looks" several times in your review underscores a point with most coffee grinders. There aren't many that look good. In fact, my favorite coffee grinder, the Zero Z1 has an odd, almost cheap looking stand. I think my Kafatek MC4 looks great though there are other issues. Weber grinders look great too but they have their issues. The Niche Zero looks like a wilted eggplant. Frankly, there aren't any coffee grinders that I know of that are both ergonomic and design masterpieces.
What are some of the kafetek issues you've run into?
@@_rtj The burrs like to travel, which they were designed to do, but the red arrow sticker then travels too. Right now, the sticker on my grinder is way off any number setting, below -0. The fix is to get another sticker. For the price, why stickers? Also, perhaps more importantly, there is no way to clean the inside of the Kafatek. The RPMs are slow too, which also is part of design, to prevent overheating the beans, but grinding still requires patience.
I think the Kafatek grinders look like a cobbled mess of metal.
@@JeepBigE "Cobbled" mess? I don't see it. Sounds too jury-rigged to me. They are awfully substantial and chunky though, hence the "Monolith" name.
@@JeepBigE agreed, great burrs, but ugliest grinder in the tier
Is it ready for pre order in US yet?
Option-O makes the best grinders.
how is the body on the shots, compared to the niche? i want this kind of grinder, and was about to purchase the niche, but have been waiting on the casa. milk drinks exclusively, medium roast preference, with workflow and build quality being super important
I’d say body is on the lighter side of medium, where the Niche lands closer to the heavier side of medium, likely due to the more traditional conicals in it from Mazzer.
In the medium/dark roast range I would often prefer the niche.
@@Sprometheusthank you! Sorry to be so technical, but I personally love medium, I don't like dark roast, but kinda like the light/medium. But with milk drinks exclusively, would you still go niche? I have a hand grinder for pour over
could you please review the Lelit Anna v2?
The 90 second cycle is a dealbreaker. Need a new shot every 60 seconds before my palate might reset.
Conicals are so underrated in the coffee world.
Sorry to ask a second question- looks like $389 for the 48mm and $486 for the 65. Does that indicate it's the same body and motor? Wonder if that would be a concern
I like the looks, I just wish Option O would offer a traditional burr set for it, or for the Lagom Mini for that matter. I have the Mini and it's a pleasure to use, but the profile just isn't for me
Can you elaborate on the profile?
Dang. It is hella tempting to sell the niche zero and replace it with one of these. I love Niche Zero for espresso, but it's never worked for filter, having something of this build quality that can do both is very intriguing. I already own a P64, do you think there will be any crossover in the flavor profiles of those two grinders? I'm guessing that will depend heavily on the burr set. Also, is there anything I would be missing from the Casa that I currently get from the Niche Zero? Thanks again for the great content Spro!
The Mini has been around for awhile and does the same thing. You could have just gotten one of those
@@commentator2.0 Hoping to get the 65mm burrs, which the mini can not have to my knowledge. Also, I like the form factor of the casa better.
Hi there, can you create a Hario Switch recipe?
what profile you're using on the decent these days?
What scale is that at 4:35?
price?
Did I miss a mention of the price point? I know you said entry to mid range price, but are we talking sub $1000 USD?
$400 price range was mentioned at the 8:20 mark
$389
For conical I will stick with my Niche Zero!
Do you prefer the taste profile to Aries. The 65mm conical will be available with Casa?
Mojo dojo Casa grinder
What’s the cost on this thing? I can’t find “official” pricing anywhere?
From what I was told by Option-O it’ll be $380-390 before shipping
@@Sprometheus so virtually the same price as a Lagom mini? Interesting…
Pricing is up now. 389 for small burrs. 486 for big burrs.
Space grade aluminum ? Nice.
Luckily they source their materials from Earth which is located in Space,
It looks like a Fellow Opus on a stand
☕☕☕
Love Is Important 💖💖💖 ....
I thought brushless motors were silent
UFO brewer review soon???
Biggest down side has to be the tone of that sound. That is a whiny thing. Sounds like an RC car taking a corner.
The fact that Lagom does not make matte white grinders really annoy me but also helps me not splurging on useless toys. I'm very satisfied with my Sculptor 64s and I prefer complexity over body.
Yeah I’m a little surprised they’ve stuck so hard to the silver and black this long. The 064s is a killer grinder, and if you want more clarity flats will always be the way.
These are anodized and if you knew anything about that then you’d know you can’t do white
Is white making a comeback? I remember my mom having a lot of white appliances back in the 90s. I also remember them yellowing over time.
@@mrhonda1 Matte white stays white. I don't buy cheap white plastic appliances but yes white looks much better than stainless steel ever did.
Way better than the trash Weber puts out and way cheaper. Probably would use as a secondary as I use a flat burr preference but my wife likes milk drinks and it's challenging to get the big conical body without losing clarity on a flat.
perk trade in program for us Lagom Mini owners for easy hassle free upgrade? Option-O? Anyone? Buehler?
Seriously 😅
I have the Mini and this just seems like the Mini in an ugly package with the option of a larger burr. Considering it’s only $15 more and has a knocker and auto-off feature that’s not a bad deal for those in the market
Sacrebleu: Numbers, instead of dots, upset the pure design aesthetic of the Mini. Yes, sarcasm.
Really loathe that whiny motor noise. Sounds cheap, like the EG-1
Such a bizarre rollout from the company to have put this on their website for weeks without pricing information or the chance to pre-order. They also don’t respond to questions or comments in Instagram. Why?
To put you at ease perhaps, their customer service is impeccable and has a high reputation. One of the reasons I bought the Mini over a year ago. They have been so helpful.
From what I've heard, they didn't do preorder after having delay issues with the 01. Other than that, it looks pretty standard a rollout.
@@ToddParker they are responsive but didn’t care that my Mini’s motor shaft bent slightly causing the burr to not spin true. They just said it was “fine” so I just live with it. Not impeccable or highly regarded by me
price?????????????????????????????????????????????????????
I said in the video, it helps to listen. In the $400 range, before shipping
I don't know how they made a 200W motor sound puny and pathetic... but yeah. Big oof.
m,ay be... but way too expensive for normal people..and additionally: I refuse, reject the use of any kinda cup or something like this for catching the grind. On ly direct grinding into the portafilter is accepted. basta. (no unnecessary oxygen contamination and elongated workflow.)
looks okay not great
I wish I waited a little longer for this but I’m liking my df64 a lot 🥹 I got this beautiful light roast finally dialed in and it’s been producing the most wonderful cups I’ve ever had. I actually drink the whole cup 😂 I got to start trying different drinks though but I’m loving the espresso it’s making.
