We have the PTR 91F out at the range today. This rifle is a heavy barreled clone of the original HK-91, the original civilian version of the venerable G3 battle rifle. These rifles are great shooters, very reliable though use of a fluted chamber and delayed roller blowback operation.
The rifle is a bit rough of brass, however there are some aftermarket products such as port buffers to help with that minor issue. The trigger is setup out of the box for a 7.5lb pull weight, not the best for accuracy work but you may be surprised at what we wring out of the rifle even with a heavy trigger.

Well, I carried the G3 during my military service in the mid 80´s as my standard weapon and I can say it was a hell of a gun. Most of the time we trained on ranges of 100 to 300 meters and back in that days I never thaught that a mass produced automatic rifle that was in steady use could be that accurate and to hit 17 or more targets on 300 meters with a 20 round magazine was not an accident! Even during my special sniper training we (among others) used the G3 with a 4x Scope on ranges up to 1000 meters with tremendous results. Speaking of the magazines. Eric presented us an aluminium 20 round magazine from 1985. Well, this was the time when the German Army changed from steel magazines to aluminium magazines. During my first few months I carried four of these steel monsters and later they where replaced by the aluminum ones. Man... what a difference in weight! So all I can say about the (original) G3 is that it is a very, very accurate rifle and that not only under proper range conditions but also in the hard everyday military service.

well, we did have aluminum magazines in 1980, in fact most were aluminum, the heavy steel mags were few in between, definetely not standard in 1980. PzGrenDiv6, Brigade 16+17, Dran Drauf Drüber!

I serve in the Colombian Military with the G3 (full automatic version) PTR 91F great piece to work with. We used to wear 5 magazines, very heavy but the piece was very reliable.

I carried a an AG3-F1 wich is the Norwegian version of the G3 with a sliding stock during my milliary service in Norway. Shooting that thing is what I miss the most about the army :-)

Bumbling Bushcraft Maybe you guys can help me out. I am having a time vetting used to the sight picture. When using setting "1" on the diopter rear sight, do you try lining up the notch with the front post or do you forget the rear sight and focus on the post. I've been struggling for consistency with this setup. I am more used to the ghost ring setup. I just got this rifle.

I forgot to mention, that I'm still reloading with the same load and using the same cases I saved from years ago. So far, I gave loaded them 11 times and see NO signs of damage on the inside of the cases! Through the years I had 3 with split necks and no head separations! I love your videos!
Kim Curtis That's good to know because someone talked about possible damage and not being able to reload but it's good to hear from you that it's still a way to save some cash.
X products needs to make that damn drum affordable. I could arm 1000 west africans with AKs and Hi-points to shoot ebola for the cost of a X-products drum.
Lower cost and weight. Even the skeletonized loaded is hefty. And as eric pointed out, the loading wheel, reduce the size a bit so you avoid interference. Plus it could be lightened.
I hear ya, however when i saw one at a gunshow earlier this year i couldn't resist and bought one. I could of got a mosin and 100s of rounds of ammo for what i paid for that drum, but I do love that drum.

Thanks for the video! :) When I served in the German Luftwaffe in the late 80's, the G3 was our service weapon. Great gun to shoot with, though my rifle was older than me at that time.

What are you talking about? Did you even watch the video? What did they say bad about the PTR? I didn't hear anything really negative at all.
They said it was very accurate and very capable. Extremely cheep mags. High reliability, proven track record.
Not sure what you could say bad about this firearm besides it is a older design and (this was not in the video) it damages the spent casing / brass. I know this since I own one.

The FAL compared to the HK or PTR91 in my opinion isn't even close. The closer tolerances on the FAL make it much less reliable and much more finicky.
Not to mention the HK / PTR will eat anything you feed it. Not so with FAL.
Also the HK / PRT mags are insanely cheap. literally $3 or less you can get 20 rd mags. The FAL mags are at least $25+.
I also own a AR10 which is a nice rifle but again the reliability isn't even close to the HK / PTR. I have had far more issues with my AR10 than the PTR. In fact I have NEVER had an issue in the last 5yrs I have owned the rifle. I have had various issues with my AR10.
I have had feeding issues, broken extractor and various other issues.
It is all personal preference and application. Over all the PTR is cheaper to shoot (since it was designed to shoot steel ammo) and it is far more reliable. Yes those are FACTS.
The AR10 has its modularity going for it and tons of after market parts. As well as being lighter in most cases and setups.
Yes you can make the AR10 a fancier smoother rifle, no question. Of course at a much higher cost. But dollar for dollar the PTR is far better. Not to mention safer. Since it has the delayed blow back.
Again it is all preference and I like and enjoy both rifles.
my shooting buddy has an old HK-91 and I enjoyed it a lot, it never fails to feed or fails to eject a spent cartridge, but it is cared for very well.
I had to gve my AG3 a little pat after watching this. It's been in service with the army since 1969, and today with the Home Guard. According to the armorer, it has never needed any major repair, nor had its barrel changed, despite maybe 100.000 rounds through it. Last years inspection had him keep it for a day tho, refinishing it and changing out some bolts(for the front grip) that had ben worn out from use.
I love that rifle, I know if things go bad and I have to step up in the Home Guard, it will do its job without issues. Only time I've had a failure on it was during a night shoot, where somehow I had managed to get a piece of branch into the mag.
OFcourse, I also watched the mag torture test video, and had a laugh. Some of my mags have more dings than a italian 1978 lambretta thats been in use in Rome for 30 years :P Yet they never seem to fail.

I believe the PTR91 to be one of the better Battle rifles produced. The welding is superior in many respects to the original HK. When deciding on a true battle rifle considerations I consider are: take down power, availability of ammo on the battle field, accuracy, versatility (CQB, distance, putting food on the table - just in case) and dependability. I too have found this rifle to fit all those things and then some. BTW...try the new trigger pack - much cleaner break.
I served with spanish CETME C, the father of all this G3, PTR, etc. Mad tough, great with bayonet or as mallet. In Spec. Ops. we shot a lot every day, very precise in long range, a bit jumper when auto, but almost no recoil. May be too long for urban combat. Great at open range. People say it's a bit heavy... By your third month with it in your hand every single day, it's like a feather.
A bit rusty. Cleaning frequently is a must.
Enjoyed the video very much! I bought an original HK 91 in 1978 or 1980 and used it to hunt deer and antelope here in Wyoming. Over the years it was accurate enough to take 21 deer and 38 antelope with head and/or neck shots! It was VERY accurate from the bench, turning in better than 1 MOA most of the time with hand loads of 44 gr. of IMR 4064 in commercial and military cases using I lg rifle primers and 165 to 168 grain Sierra BTHP bullets! I got stupid and traded it for a Valmet sniper rifle in 7.62X39. I hated it! Tried to get the HK back but couldn't! I now have a PTR 91 w/18 inch barrel and a Hi-Lux/Leatherwood camputer scope and I love it. All together with a bi-pod, aluminum handguard and the sope it weighs nearly 16 pounds! As far as mags go, I had 8 that I kept from years ago and bought another 10 last fall for $2.00 each, NEW! I love it! Keep up the good work!

I had both, the G3 and the G36, in my servicetime in the german Bundeswehr. Trust me, none of us liked the G36 half as much as the G3. A great gun.
I bought 200 G-3 mags back in 2005 for under $1.50 Ea. I love the H&K 91 and have several. I'm a bit picky on my battle rifles but am truly impressed with your demo of the PTR 91F. Thanks to both of you for the video.

LOVE my PTR 91-F. I added a wide black handguard and a Greek contract bipod. I'm also using a B-Square mount so I can use the iron sights for close range and the scope for long range.
+mcm95403 What's the MOA on the F model? Heard it's more accurate than the GI.
Next time I get to the range I'll let you know. My glasses are so old I can't really see the sights, but last time I went shooting I put all 40 rounds I fired into the black at 100 yards. Being 52 with 20/600 eyesight sucks.
mcm95403 My eyesight's not much better and I'm 21...No worries. As far as into the black goes (I can't remember honestly), that's like within what radius? A foot or less? As long as you can put 9/10 rounds into an area 8-9 inches across (at 100 yards), it's perfect for me. I am eager to hear your next response. =)

there is always the time needed to get to know each rifle. A skill that applies to rifles, commercial trucks, sewing machines and people all across the world. Even a car you've never driven that's the same model as the one you've driven for years, same age, mileage, make and model will have differences. During designated marksman training, our instructors would smoke the shit out us and switch our rifles while we were sleeping to throw us loop. Shooters adjust to rifles, spotters adjust to shooters, when they did that to us it was to teach fast, under pressure adaptation, because your buddy might be a casualty and your weapon might malfunction. Keeping the weapon available in the fight with the personnel able saves lives. Adjust adapt, overcome.
Fine rifle, one I would consider for a one and done option.

I love mine! My AR's don't get as much attention since I bought my PTR-91. It really is a joy to shoot and it seems to get better with every trip to the range.

i have a ptr 91 and it is by far my favorite rifle. I've had a p90 a kriss a couple ars couple ak and ak variants and i dont know why but, this one is my favorite and it's a serious tac driver
That gun screams for getting upgraded with a PSG1 or similar match trigger. Awesome video
The gun had only one problem when was becoming hot. It tended to brake the ring that held the front of the barrel and the front sites. The front sites were stopping to look parallel with the barrel (sometimes). You could have a very good shot concentration 5 yards from the target LOL. Other than that is a fantastic gun. It can destroy pretty much anything you shoot at. Extremely accurate too.
The best and worst thing about this rifle is that it was designed to shoot steel cheap ammo. If you think you are going to reload with brass, don't count on it. It damages the brass reliably every time.
But it will eat anything you can feed it and reliably fire every time. It is literally reliable like an AK. Dirt mud snow water anything doesn't seem to effect this rifle in the least.
Also the mags are cheap. I got 20 for less than $40 with shipping.
I must say I love this it is one of my favorite .308s.

Benjamin Griffith I never thought people habitually reuse spent cases rather than go to the store to buy some more lead (except for rare calibers that aren't mass-produced anymore)
+John Whitesell yeah we do use spent brass. not only for rare calibers but stuff that is to expensive to not reload. 338 Lapua comes to mind. that stuff is $4-5 a shot for factory ammo.
There is a rubber piece you can put on the deflector and saves brass, it does put a little dent but the lines from the fluted trunnion are not harmful to the brass
One of my all time favorite weapons. I bought a cetme for 550 awhile back and was pleasantly surprised when during the first break down I found that the previous had swapped in as many genuine hkparts they could find

I have the GI version and with iron sights I got a 7in group at 200m. I got the 1-6 optic otw can't wait to see if it improves
What optic did you go with, does yours have the top rail mount? I’ve got one shipping out soon and am weighing my options.
I bought my PTR-91 in 2010 when I was sent out with 900 bucks to pick up a new mattress. Mattress was 1150 bucks, but the gun store right next door had new PTRs for 850 dollars. She left shortly after.

If you don't have one...get one. The PTR91 is a fine weapon system with a proven track record of reliability. You can drop one from a helicopter, pick it up and fire it as if nothing ever happened....iron sights that is. I have a few and swear by them. They have functioned accurately and flawlessly through several thousand rounds. Remember garbage in...garbage out. If you use crap ammo it will most likely cause any weapon system to fail. AR10's are nice but I'd take a solid PTR anyday.

i have a old school ptr 91 f that was made with a hk g3 parts kit the heart beat of my gun was made in 62 and stamped hk it has the old ptr scorpion logo
During my service in the German Armed Forces, the last time I shot this (as a G3) at a 300 metres range (approximately 330 yards) on pop up targets, I got nine out of ten with iron sights. It's just an very accurate weapon - hands down! Also very reliable but heavy as f*ck. Nevertheless, I would prefer it to a G36 for my personal "home gun". However, I'm not allowed here to own one for personal purposes instead of being a member in a gun club or a proven huntsman. It's a pity.
Not really. This discussion popped up here a few years ago but in conclusion it was more of a political forced thing. I've never had a single issue with this gun within 8 years of service. There was a few rumors that it could have some issues in battles in Afghanistan which lasts for hours. But that beeing said one have to see that this rifle wasn't designed for the massive heat and conditions in this area. The Bundeswehr's first duty is to prevent and defend the german general public on german ground, a defense force. So, certainly it was designed for middle european woodland first of all.
Actually I have never shot this rifle, but for me it looks like a good contender.
Could you throw in a FA trigger pack and bolt carrier and do a meltdown Video-maybe PTR or Atlantic Firearms can help you out with this. Never seen a Roller-lock meltdown, and maybe the manufactuer wold be interested in seeing this on YT. Good selling point for them

WE used to shoot these in Semi Auto here in the UK 'till a few folk were killed by a madman. Now we only have .22lr Semi autos which as you know never harmed even a fly !!!!

Having carries and used a L1a1 (FAL) through the 80s and familiar with the Bundeswhere G3 this is a rifle I would love to own. FALs and G3 /HK91 superior to modern 762Nato assault rifles, especially now optics are improved for use on them. Thanks for posting!

Looks like a stg-44 and an mp5 had a baby. I love it.
Well, the Germans who designed the Sturmgewehr eventually were responsible for this, and the MP5 was just a scaled down version for 9mm. So I guess this is the STG-44's son, and the MP5's father.
I may be late and redundant, but whatever.
Much like the AK family, the G3, MP5, and STG-44 are all very similar to each other, with the STG-44 being the original daddy of the family. Reason is it saves R&D cost, and plus, why would anyone change/fix something that works very well? So like NitroNinja24 said, only difference is the scale of the parts which accommodates the caliber it fires.
A non-firearms example would be the Boeing design.

@Iraqveteran8888 PLEASE DO A COMPARISON VIDEO of a .308 and a 7.62x54R. I've seen so many comparison videos where the video maker starts off by using a bolt action mosin and a PTR and that to me just starts the problems from the beginning. What I am looking for is 15 minutes of bolt action, 15 minutes of semi-auto. In the comparison I would like to see 1) Chronograph of both bolt action and semi-auto groups (both .308 and 7.62x54R). 3) Accuracy testing of both sets at 50, 100, 500 yards [whatever your max ability is - both sets :)) 3) Penetration testing of both sets. 4) Ballistic gel of both sets. Someone told me that in the end of the day the .308 out performs the 7.62x54R. But I hear its really close. To be honest I am looking to get a main medium caliber rifle. I have Mosin Nagant ammo. But someone told me the .308 just out performs the 7.62x54R in many different categories. I say due to the size the 7.62x54R should out perform the .308 since its a larger caliber, supposedly at a flatter trajectory and many more categories. I do know the .308 is more readily available. So you would think and hope that it is in higher demand because it can out perform. Please and Thank you! I would be willing to do the comparison video with you. But please message me :)

The G3 is a license built copy of a German designed but Spanish produced rifle. It was originally going to be the WW2 German STG45 but the war ended before the design was finalized. The engineers took the prototype and designs ,first to France and then Spain who was willing to let them compete their work on the new rifle for the Spanish government at the CETME arsenal. In the early 60s Germany was looking to replace their license built copy of the FAL and bought production rights to the Spanish M1958 rifle.

The CETME had diopter sights. They were in a 4 sided flip paddle with an open notch for 100 and 3 peep holes for 200,300,400.
Vary nice choose in optic VORTIC made in Middleton WISCONSIN 10 miles from my house. There is a reason the military uses them, vary clean and sharp images along with ability to cut throw vegetation, low light, distance.

I’ve got this same exact rifle.I shot a S/A SuperMatch for years in DCM competition.
After that experience,
any semi-auto had to really impress me.
I have absolutely 0 negative opinions concerning this rifle.
Recoil is manageable,& accuracy is acceptable.
Recently I took it to a range and fired some hand-loaded Hornady 165gr.SST’s and they stacked on top of each other.
I used IMR4895 w/match primer.Yes,recoil is a slight push.

The delayed roller locked action of the H&K design is what makes their PSG1 sniper rifle, one of the most accurate semi auto rifles in the world. However, the downside with all the HK's is that the fluted chamber, along with the violent ejection of brass, renders about 3/4 of your casings unusable.
***** The HK91 tends to throw casings about 30-40 feet forward and right from your firing position. About 50% of them will be badly dented from impact with the ejection port. You can install a port buffer to minimize this somewhat. Also, the brass fire-forms itself to the chamber flutes, and these become stress risers in the casing. As such, you should only reload casings once, then toss them.
If you want to improve the trigger on a ptr just swap in a psg1 trigger group, from hkparts.net
Jose Velasquez Indeed. However, PSG-1 trigger groups are about 500-600 dollars. A less expensive, but equal alternative is to have the existing trigger group modified to a set trigger by Williams Trigger Specialties. For about 175 dollars, he can modify the HK-91 trigger to 4 lbs on normal mode, and 2.5 lbs on "set", with only about .030" of trigger creep. I have one of these triggers on my PSG-1, believe me, there is a HUGE difference between this and the stock HK-91 trigger.
i had an old portugese contract g3 (with the telescoping stock) decades ago and shot both spanish corrosive surplus but a few civilian cases many which got dents.
i full based resized the civilian brass and reloaded them and they all worked, at least for 4 or 5 reloads.
I'm not saying you CAN'T reload brass from a fluted chamber multiple times..... but from what I have read, it's not recommended, because the flutes create stress risers in the casings, which can cause longitudinal splitting with repeated firings. The flutes in the
chamber are to ease the extraction forces of the hot case and lessen how tight it adheres to the chamber wall, that puts stress on the brass at each flute. That sort of stress is not seen in a normal chamber since
they don't have the flutes and to what extent that will effect case
performance and longevity are an unknown.
Case preparation will take time in that each case will need to be sized, trimmed to length, primer pocket swaged (most likely with military
cases) and then fireformed to remove the flute dents. The amount of reloads available after that is an unknown and if a case fails it would
most likely not be at the normal web-failure point, but rather at a flute. Case failures and escaping gas at 50,000 psi is not a good thing
to have happen.
FWIW, the barrel is floated. The hand guard is held by a flange mounted to the cocking tube. A couple of nice modifications you might enjoy include a trigger job and paddle mag release by Bill Springfield.

Negative Alien Go for a PTR. I'm saving for one myself. Was gonna get a C308 but....I was swayed out of it. I want the paddle mag release anyways, and some of the PTRS have 'em.
Dont get the cetme get the ptr you will thank me later.

In Sweden on the AK4B (G3) we got an brass collector on the right side.
We called in my time in the Hemvärnet(National Guard) Elefant pungen (Elephant sac)
It worked but it could also cause malfuntions if the brass bounced back into the receiver.

I T&E'd an original HK91 some years ago, and personally I found it to be one of the hardest recoiling .308's I've ever shot. It almost seemed like it belted my shoulder twice...once when it fired and again when the action cycled. I shot it next to a Springfield Armory M1A and an FN-LAR and there was no comparison. It came in a distant 3rd. JMO of course.
I don't think there is a better .308 battle rifle out there for the money than the PTR 91 variants. Sure the M1A's and Scar's are great but they are 2-4x the pric.e

This gun is true power in your hands. Although it's not a sniper rifle but it s fairly accurate in 500 yards with quality ammu and good scope. it's a solid battle rifle that gives significant firepower. good for law enforcements.

Apples and Oranges. A Military combat weapon with a combat trigger =/= compare to a Mini 14 with a pencil barrel that never gets used for more than a few range trips or a hunt or three. When they say one is accurate and the other not they are in different context entirely.

When I did my military service I had two assault rifles (AK4 like i this clip but with full automatic and the AK5). I loved the AK4 it because it was heavy, never failed and it really packed a punch. I now hunt with a .308w because I liked the 7.62Nato so much.

The fact that the bolt doesn't lock back is one reason why I'll never buy this rifle. It's so much easier to tell when you've run dry when you can feel the bolt lock back, or feel the lack of a reset in the trigger. That flinch is common for people who aren't used to rifles like this.
HK9x series rifles have free floated barrels; there aren't any contact points on the barrel except at the trunnion, making the HK9x series quite unique among the world of military semi-automatic rifles. Especially when looking at the era these guns were produced in. Gotta love H&K.

Fantastic!! Those were always great battle rifles!!!! The G 300 meters or less is where these were meant to shine!!! Especially with open sights. We always shot 300 meters or less when we were qualifying with a silhouette target. If you shot a 6" group at 300 meters open sights you qualified expert when I went through.

Got mine out in the mountains a few days ago and man it's an amazing rifle! Very accurate and solid rifle! The weight definitely helps take down a lot of the recoil and the muzzle brake that is on mine helps a lot too. I highly recommend a PTR91 for anyone who wants a high quality battle rifle/target rifle/DMR that won't break the bank. I got mine for $1,500 with a bunch of extra mags and 500 rounds of ammo much of which is match grade. Definitely the best rifle I've ever owned!
Another top notch video/review! I got the ptr 91 GI, some cons are the iron sites are way off on mine and I need to send it in to get fixed. The windage is over 6inches off at 25yrds with max adjustment. I don't reload but my spent brass is dented sometimes which Ive read may prevent reloading. Trigger is not good as you guys stated. Lastly I need to get a cheek riser for stock to shoot with my leopold patrol 1.25-4 scope, otherwise I'm shooting with chin weld! One last important note for potential buyers, you are limited on the overall length of scope to about 12inches because of the charging handle, any longer and the charging and scope are to close when you lock chamber open.
Pros are cheap mags, accurate, reliable as hell, aesthetics, price of rifle, the fact that they used original tooling to manufacture the rifle.

In the 80's I shot 38 Antelope and 28 deer with one of these rifles and all were head or neck shots, very close to the head! I do NOT like wasting meat! VERY accurate and, once you get the trigger figured out, they can be ALMOST target rifles! THANKS, guys!

Fabi A. It's a little more than a copy see the company itself bought the machine tools from an H&K facility in Portugal when they stopped producing and got permission from H&K to produce the rifles on the original schematics with the PTR name.
It's more of a Clone than a Copy. It is built to g3 Spec, and can accept almost all Original Milsurp Parts.
This gun I would have liked in the German army during my tenure. What a beautiful, precise and fearsome gun.

I have the same rig, but with the rails up front, same XS 50rd drum, tirjicon 2.5-10 power x 56mm objective... it's a nail driver. They did a good job with the modern fluted barrel.
When I was buying surplus mags they were 99cents lol...
