You missed what he said at 5:28: "Tamil cinema has been used as a political tool for the past 70, 80 years". That's way before Maniratnam & Kamalahasan.

Maniratnam is a very contemporary movie maker who is hardly social. His movies are nationalistic and patriotic than socio-political. Even Iruvar which although had protagonist who had a public/political life, the movie itself was about friendship and relationships.
Vetrimaran or Pa Ranjith, on the other hand, are a serious movie maker in genre of socio-politics.
Such nuanced differences only very few who are aware of difference between regional history and Indian History will be able to pick up.

@@MyPersonalAccount124you are not able to figure out what he is trying to say bro. I will put it in a different way, Aayutha Ezhuthu as a story involves politics but it will never create any consequences like socio-political tensions or for that matter start a debate in real society after its release. Imo maniratnam would have never had such an idea in his mind rather than sculpting the art with human values and emotions. On the other hand, Pa Ranjith or Vetrimaran are actually making a statement against the system and they know what discussion they want to create very specifically with their films.

    • @kayalk8772
      @kayalk8772 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@MyPersonalAccount124ayutha ezhuthu is also patriotic not socio political. Like same story fit north indian audience too like bombay. Based on nationalist sentiment. Vetrimaran films are based on dravidian ideologies. In short tamil nadu is always left leaning where as nation is mostly right. Hence socio political exist more here

Very true... ManiRathnam is never a rooted director... His way of film making is seen as POSH and very artistic and appealing to the senses of educated people. His sensibilities are diametrically opposite.... Bharathiraja was the one who started this realistic film manking, about the rural set up. There were directors on and off touching the societal issues and caste oppression.... But this wave started with the quality directors like Vetrimaran, Pa Ranjith and Marri Selvaraj... These people have great understanding of the ground reality. Here, Vetrimaran is seen as a the one with utmost intelligence and nuanced film making. He is class apart. He worked as assistant to an yester year LEGENDRARY film maker Balu Mahendra... He was the only one who was making PARALLEL MOVIES in Tamil cinema then... He did a mix of commercial and art house to maintain his relevance in the Industry ( only when the movies are success can he make his fav genre of art house movies )
No wonder Vetrimaran turned out to be this GENIUS of an director... Dhanush played a BIG part in trusting him and he kept doing movies with him. Vetrimaran is someone a normal mainstream producer cant understand... So Dhanush produced his initial movies to give him that creative space.
VM mentioning Tamil movies being used as a political tool started as early as 1950's the first one which started the wave was PARASAKTHI, it was penned by karunanithi, who later became the CM of the state. It was the debut film of SIVAJI, Legendary actor. In 60s and 70s Many actors especially MGR used all his movies to propagate his IMAGE as a saviour of the commoner. It did catapult him to be the CM of the state.

There are several Tamil political directors like Vetrimaaran - Pa. Ranjith, Raju Murugan, Gopi Nainar, Naveen and Lenin Bharathi. I would also add Atlee and A.R. Murugadoss but the difference is Atlee makes grandeur commercial movies and ARM too but they sure they deliver a strong social message to the public e.g ARM's movies Kaththi, Sarkar and Atlee's debut new Hindi movie Jawan. All of them have a strong content that resonates with the audience throughout. We need such filmmakers who make meaningful movies among other full-fledged entertainers

Tamilnadu has been ruled by dravidian political parties for over 60 years, and the ideology reached the mass mainly through movies. Our ex CMs Karunanidhi, MGR , J Jayalalitha were all part of tamil cinema. Guys you need to know mainly about one person, MGR , he was the most almired and no one had ever ruled the hearts of tamil people like him ever. When he was sick and needed a kidney transplant , so many tamil people volunteered to give their own kidney and save him. He then won the assembly election and became CM from hospital and without doing any election campaigns. Every actor in tamil cinema always wants to be famous like him.

The Current Ruling government of Tamil nadu evolved around "Social Justice" had Professors and Activist who used Cinema as a political tool to speak Voice of Unheard . This was even before Kamal & Maniratnam. Even Kamal's rolemodel "Sivaji Ganeshan" (honorary Mayor of Niagra city - US, for a day) did political films "Parasakthi". This film is still an identity for Ex-Chief Minister of Tamilnadu for his dialogues (more on critics of Tamil nadu Politics). Like wise the Opposition Party had MGR (actor turned Politician, who was friend of ex CM). These 2 (MGR, Kalaingar Karunanidhi) people were the original characters of "Iruvar" movie directed by Maniratnam. Kalaingar means Artist. Artforms and Politics in TN has stronger Connect than anyother state.

Political and Social issues were the main plot from 1952 in Tamil cinema. Such movies were a huge hit, and that started the trend that the mainstream movies were based on such themes. That's the reason Tamil cinema does not have parallel movies.

nothing wrong with making political films but one of the significant challenges facing the film industry from the very beginning is its lack of diversity in terms of socio-political and philosophical perspectives. The industry is dominated by a closed group of like-minded individuals who are not receptive to filmmakers with different viewpoints, and created their monopoly, and make groomed audience (so much for diversity and free thinking) . Their can be many reasons how this happens, some: influencing artists world view during there training and career ,making close groups and funding specific films. im not talking about specific real world politics but about political diversity in film industries

Wrong Turn like movies runing the youth. And Serial Killer movies with over violence is not good for public. So I want a sensor board in India.
After watching wrong turn, I wonder why america allows production of such movies. its not at all good for youth mindset. So I strongly recommend sensor board is necessary for India. Especially some people have this so called political agenda to make wrong things about India. Its really internal + foreign politics. So if there are any wrong intentions, its not good for our public. So we have to think in both the ways.
So In my opinion not siding with any political parties I think, Sensor board is really needed fo India.
I genuinely think its needed for every country.
I even strongly recommend the ban of wrong turn like movies. I only watched one of it. Thats enough. Such a bad movie and wrong intention. No good messesage really sucking movie.

The benefit of having political messages in the mainstream ‘mass media’ means that more people will watch it and this enables social change. Asuran was a great example, as Vetrimaran points out. It was digestible for an average movie goer, excellently made movie that was watched by millions of people who understood, sympathised and potentially will act on that sympathy in their politics. What more can you ask for?
America can learn a thing or two from that.
Elevated artistry is a privilege. Meaningful social progress for the generationally marginalised is more important.
Rick and Korbin, you need to think about that as two white men.
Suggestion: Watch Asuran with an African American friend of yours. And ask them what they think.
