With a track length of only 47 km, this line was decommissioned because it did not provide as many profits as trains in Java. After almost a century later, the Indonesian government brought back this mode of train service, but with a different and longer route, namely from Makassar to Pare Pare.

Railways were built very late on Sulawesi. The first railway and tram lines were built in 1864 on Java and Sumatra by the Dutch-Indies Railways. These were the first railway lines in Southeast Asia. In the 1920s, most cities in Sumatra and Java were connected by rail. In the 1920s, the Dutch began building railway lines on Borneo and Sulawesi. Honestly, the railway project in Sulawesi was done haphazardly. They built railway tracks with specifications exceeding those in Sumatera and Java (except high-speed railway). But on the other hand, they're using manual labor, making construction longer than it should. And then they still couldn't decide what sort of rolling stock would be used. So they resorted to DMU originally designed for narrow gauge track, modified for standard gauge operations. To this date, they still don't have definitive rolling stocks for this network. The operator company was only set up when the railway project was 90% finished. And finally, none of the tracks served major cities.
true, i was quite disappointed with the lack of proper plan despite our experience of building tracks and trains. I haven't heard the extension of the line after 2 years of open, i hope PT. KAI will be more serious to build a route that will connect major cities in South Sulawesi. But for a 10,000 Rp, the ticket is a real bargain.

With mountainous terrain in most of the islands and some islands covered with thick swampland and peatland, train is actualy the perfect mode of transportation since it's alot cheaper to build and to maintain the rail track than road
Thanks for the video. If you look carefully you'll notice that the train is just a temporary setup, just to get a service up and going - they took a 3'6" DMU and plopped it on SG bogies, this can be noticed by the train's rather small profile and the gap between the train and platform. I'll suppose that as the system develops they will order larger equipment. I was looking at the line on Google Earth and it has already sprung a branch towards a cement mill, which means that there is an intention of starting freight services soon.
in the 1st phase ( Makassar - Maros-Pangkep-Barru- Pare Pare) its designed connected with 3 harbours ( Makassar, Garongkong and Pare Harbour) and 2 big cement plant ( Tonasa in Pangkep anf Bosowa Maros ). So this route will be utilized with materials cargo. Some materials could be carried out such as cement, coal or clinker for exports. But i thought its not easy because Tonasa has its own harbour in Biringkassi (Pangkep). But in the future its really potential as tourism transportation. Those area are blessed with the second largest karst formation in the world that has many beautiful site to explore including the oldest cave painting in the world. Currently traveler can visit Rammang - rammang or Bantimurung waterfall. I hope this train also can be offering to tourist who want to go to Tana Toraja. They can start by train from Makassar to Pare pare and then continue to Toraja by bus.
@@andipejalan3382 Looking forward to see it extended to Tana Toraja (tourist destination) and Palopo (growing industrial zone) as the intermediate stops to Palu or maybe Luwuk, although the latter seems to be more alluring given the significant economic growth in the area. Definitely much much better option than going through thinly-populated area of West Sulawesi (Mamuju), which makes little sense, despite a need to build tunnels through the rugged terrain of Central Sulawesi. A short extension from the downtown Makassar or the port to the airport (only 1 km from the current Mandai terminus) could also be really handy and generate a lot of riderships, with possibility of upgrading it to a full-fledged commuter rail, since it would also traverse an industrial zone and residential neighborhoods in between.
@@andipejalan3382 Obviously, the current terminus is in the middle of nowhere. No convenient public transportation between the airport and the station. Thus a need to extend it to both downtown area and the airport (the latter is a branch line). Thankfully they could build elevated tracks along the existing expressway if they want.
I think what hinders development in every region of Indonesia is the political officials in that region. what I have noticed in this country and the complaints of people in each region. so maybe I think the officials are in power in that area
Yes and also local businesses who felt threatened by such public transport like this one. In Bali for example, why public transit is almost non-existent is because car rental owners all opposed it. Same thing with this train line which were opposed by the former Vice President of Indonesia due to his numerous businesses in Makassar area
Excellent trip report, never knew it's already in operation for a year! Another point from perspective of multimodal transportation - just realized the current Makassar terminus was built just 1 km from the airport. Would be great if instead of having a wasted opportunity of disjointed modes, a branch to the airport from Mandai terminus could be built in the future to serve demand between the airport and Parepare and the rest of regions north of Makassar. Even better if the track is extended southward to downtown Makassar (perhaps new rail parallel to the existing airport motorway?) - providing seamless connection from the downtown to the airport with possibility of upgrading it to more frequent commuter rail, similar to that in Jogja and Solo. This section might also be the first one that would see dual (or triple) tracking and electrification given the possible demand.

Try visit RAMANG RAMANG near by Makassar city around 20 km ,.. its amazing view you can rent canoe to explore the Mangrove forest and beautiful streches of Rocky Hills👍
There is a length of the former rack and pinion railway that used to travel south from Semarang, now closed, preserved at Ambarawa, Central Java ( there are frequent busses from Semarang, heading to Jogya / Solo, that stop there ). A sort of homemade diesel train called a " Lori" sometimes traverses the route from Ambarawa up the hill to Tuntang and back, and if you have a group you can still charter a steam locomotive if you book ahead. In Solo you can search out ( a taxi would help ) the narrow gauge sugar railways that have rickety diesel locomotives ( also called " lori" ) that haul even more rickety wagons of sugar cane over lightly built and easily moved tracks. They are not often seen but sometimes you see their tracks crossing a road. My favourite eufy product is the full-colour solar camera.
in the 1st phase ( Makassar - Maros-Pangkep-Barru- Pare Pare) its designed connected with 3 harbours ( Makassar, Garongkong and Pare Harbour) and 2 big cement plant ( Tonasa in Pangkep and Bosowa in Maros ). So this route will be utilized with materials cargo. Some materials could be carried out such as cement, coal or clinker for exports. But i thought its not easy because Tonasa has its own harbour in Biringkassi (Pangkep). What annoys me is that they didn't build a station close to Hasanuddin airport in Maros! I concur. The current terminus is quite close to the airport. A future extension to both the downtown AND the airport would certainly be super useful and guarantee a stream of riderships if upgraded to commuter rail, since it would also serve the industrial zone (which is a significant employer) and residential neighborhoods between these places.
I am annoyed that there has been disagreement between the Central Govt. (Jakarta) and the Mayor of Makassar about the rail track extension to Makassar. The central govt wants it built on land with several level crossings (cheaper budget) while the mayor opts for elevated rail track (much more expensive). That's why the extension to Makassar is still suspended until both parties reach agreement.

Now the LRT in Palembang have received a lot of criticism because the government built it back in 2018 for Asian games to impress the international guests but the locals don't actually need it, and after the Asian games is over not a lot of people are using it. I remember my friend visited one of the station few years ago and he said it was so empty. But who knows maybe a lot of people are using it now. If it's still empty to this day that can make a good TH-cam video :)

It bounced back after the lockdown and movement restrictions though to a point that they are now adding frequencies to cater commuters at rush hours. Just a suggestion - the South Sumatra intercity and regional rails are also worth checking out. Although the long-distance night train to Bandar Lampung is pretty similar to that counterparts in Java (including two-tier classes), the lesser known regional trains to South Sumatra hinterland provide unique experience and glimpses of lives in the rural area there. Some main stations along the line are located in the heart of the cities/towns they serve, such as that in Lubuk Linggau or Lahat due to being built way back in the colonial era.
@@mcbchannel7173 trans sumatera is using the narrow gauge, only in Aceh they're using standard but most likely the standard gauge track will be scrapped or turned into a dual gauge railway to fit with the rest of the trans sumatera project
I think the train interior is more apt to be commuter line instead of long distance train. Long distance train requires more on board service, better adjustable seats, and more toilet? (Did the toilet available in every car or only 1 in the whole train)? Also I could see the yellow thing to place your hand when you stand up (what do you call it in English?) that thing doesn't needed in long distance train. Oh, next island recommendations, Sumba. But no train tho. You can,. however , enjoy scenic roads
Thank you for an extremely interesting video! But two train pairs a day cannot possibly justify either the capital cost of building the line, or the cost of the huge number of staff. However if they build at least most of the network you showed on the map, then the investment (and staffing) would be justified!

KAI will be more serious to build a route that will connect major cities in South Sulawesi. But for a 10,000 Rp, the ticket is a real bargain.
10:23 Not sure how someone would sit there, in their wheelchair, in such a small space.
Maybe the sign indicates that those two seats are "priority seating"?
Great video as always! Thank you for taking us along.
Good point!
Another great video.

I'm pleased to see you back in Indonesia with your camera. Waiting you to try Indonesia tourist steam locomotive train soon.😁 Because Never been a transportation TH-camr from outside Indonesia who has tried an Indonesian steam locomotive train.

It will!
i love at how you do your research in your videos. I'm Indonesian and i just found out that our government plans about Sulawesi High Speed Train from you. Great videos as always👍
Thanks so much, I really appreciate this!! 😊
The Eufy CCTV camera is expensive, I bought it on the Shopee Indonesia marketplace, the outdoor camera, infra red, dual camera, 4G, Wifi, with solar panel is only US$ 49.00, the camera quality is good and can be monitored in the mobile application. 😁
my hometown!! yes!!
So lucky 😁
With mountainous terrain in most of the islands and some islands covered with thick swampland and peatland, train is actualy the perfect mode of transportation since it's alot cheaper to build and to maintain the rail track than road
Absolutely!!

Thanks and welcome 🤗
Congratulations INDONESIA Sulawesi 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🫶🙏🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️
Absolutely 😁
The train is actually adapted from LRV's built for LRT Jabodebek metro system, which is already SG but with narrow dimensions
@@lontongstroong as regular flight passenger in Hasanuddin Airport, i didn't find Mandai terminus is convenient for flight passenger
Bom dia muito lindo trem indonésia nova ferrovia
I think what hinders development in every region of Indonesia is the political officials in that region. what I have noticed in this country and the complaints of people in each region. so maybe I think the officials are in power in that area
Yeah, one of Indonesia's Development struggle is local political struggle.
Yes and also local businesses who felt threatened by such public transport like this one. In Bali for example, why public transit is almost non-existent is because car rental owners all opposed it. Same thing with this train line which were opposed by the former Vice President of Indonesia due to his numerous businesses in Makassar area
At least positive steps are being made!
previous, dutch has opened railway from makassar to takalar with the 1067 mm gauge but it's closed because of the great depression.
in the city of Makassar you try to come to the port of Rotterdam, a Dutch defensive fort built in the 18th century, also to Losari beach
That's my pet peeve too...
Yes, it should definitely connected to the airport! Thanks for your comments 😊

An absolutely beautiful placel 😍
Try visit RAMANG RAMANG near by Makassar city around 20 km ,.. its amazing view you can rent canoe to explore the Mangrove forest and beautiful streches of Rocky Hills👍
Next time I will 😀
There is a length of the former rack and pinion railway that used to travel south from Semarang, now closed, preserved at Ambarawa, Central Java ( there are frequent busses from Semarang, heading to Jogya / Solo, that stop there ).
Thanks for the suggestions!
Thanks for that. I actually live in Ambarawa and often see "Lori" getting around but I wasn't fully aware of all that information you shared.

I concur. The current terminus is quite close to the airport. A future extension to both the downtown AND the airport would certainly be super useful and guarantee a stream of riderships if upgraded to commuter rail, since it would also serve the industrial zone (which is a significant employer) and residential neighborhoods between these places.

Great and interesting video. Nice to see the locals very friendly towards you :)
Thank you! 😃
First ever train in the Sulawesi island since independence day.

Ayy good to see you back in Indonesia, like you said you're planning on visiting most of the islands in Indonesia, I suggest you visit Sumatera next, specifically Palembang, South Sumatera they have their own LRT (Light Rapid Transport) like the ones in Jakarta.
Thanks for the suggestions!! 🙂
@@NonstopEurotripyou can also try some unique trains in sumatera! Theres a train with only one car there
@@stampy3335 which line?
Karena masih belum terbiasa tp kedepan pasti dibutuhkan. Itu gunanya mempersiapkan sebelum terjadi.
Dijawa kereta api masih jd favorit kalau berpergian antar provinsi.
The Solo Cam S340 is my favourite
Another news for you: They will extend this line again by one station away to the north next month! 😉 This line is actively expanding!
Thanks for the info!
Outside the high speed rail and LRT Commuter, this is like the only other standard gauge rail in Indonesia
and the trans sumatera railway bro. literally the only narrow gauge was in the regular trans java railway
@@mcbchannel7173 trans sumatera is using the narrow gauge, only in Aceh they're using standard but most likely the standard gauge track will be scrapped or turned into a dual gauge railway to fit with the rest of the trans sumatera project
The French-owned island of Corsica has a modern narrow-gauge passenger train, that may be of interest.
One day I'll make it there! 😁
The status of the train is still a pioneer train. So use a commuter train, not a long-distance train.
New trains will come with longer distances
Amazing video
Thanks!
Thank you for an extremely interesting video! But two train pairs a day cannot possibly justify either the capital cost of building the line, or the cost of the huge number of staff. However if they build at least most of the network you showed on the map, then the investment (and staffing) would be justified!
This is only the start!!

I am from North Sulawesi and quite excited with the govt plan to build the train up to my town. The plan is that Manado and Makassar railtrack will meet in the middle of the island. I hope that Manado-Bitung-Kotamobagu route will bwgin construction soon. If the government postpone this, it will be much costlier in the future due to landclearance from landlords.
Exciting times 😁😁😁
One would think that a train service in Bali would be more of a priority than Sulawesi Selatan

I don't know about the ones at stations in Sulawesi but I have experience at stations in Java.
