Thank you so much for this! Nine years late I’m still using this technique it is so true and you cannot really tell that’s for sure. Thank you for your experience and advice. Happy 2024.
Hi John ~ After searching for a good tutorial on pruning my boxwood, I'm so glad to have found yours! I'm a seasoned gardener and just wanted a quick refresher on pruning and your lesson is definitely the very best I've found. Too many of the online tutorials teach you to make lollypop shrubs - not good! Thank you!
Glad I found this vid! I have said it over and over... I cannot stand to see my shrubs looking like a perfect round orb or square box! It's just not natural looking at all. I don't need "formal" I need nature which is natural! Thank you thank you
Very informative - thanks. Any advice for transplanting a blue point juniper and pruning it. It's been in the ground for 5 years and has never been pruned. It's taken over our main entry.
Hi John, thanks again for all of the wonderful advice. I need to prune my Thuja Green Giants but I have no clue how to do it. They are planted in a bed and are now growing over the bed and crossing on to the lawn. I would appreacite a little advice, if possible. Thanks
I am so glad you said not to prune in late summer; I was about to prune my out of control Junipers. We just bought a house and there are a few dying bushes, a lot of out of control shrubs and ornamental grass that has run a muck and is taking over the SW corner of the house. I will have a lot f work in the spring. To bad I live on the other side of the country from you;)
Needleleaf evergreens like to be pruned in the spring before new growth starts. The term we use in the trade is before the "Candles" start growing or elongating.
I drastically lopped off branches that were getting into my neighbors driveway of a boxwood hedge. It is November in Eugene, Oregon and it is starting to freeze at night..with highs in the 50's. Have I ruined my mature hedge. It does look awful on his side of the bush. Tt's just a bunch on thick branches now facing his driveway. The bush is thick with foliage on the outside, and not on the inside. Can I correct all of this in the spring or summer of have I killed my nice hedge?
But what if i have an old box hedge that has been cut with shears for decades- the inside is totally void of green, how do you cut back that with pruners? Where do you cut?
Thanks for the video John! It was helpful. As a pruning/gardening rookie, I'm trying to learn how to best maintain the yard for our new home that the previous homeowners kinda let go. After watching some of your videos, I've got a couple questions for you if/when you have time. What constitutes "too late in the summer" to prune? I'd like to get some work done while we can still enjoy it, but maybe I need to wait until next year for some of the really overgrown bushes and shrubs. Is there a book or phone app that you would recommend for me (once again, I'm a rookie) to identify the bushes and shrubs we have around the house? What do you recommend for a novice in identifying varieties?
@@CTSCAPER thanks! The boxwood is about 40” tall, 36” deep and 20 feet long. Can I take off about 8 -12” inches all around or is that too much? I’ve always selectively trimmed and they’re very healthy with growth throughout, not just on the outside tips, but I didn’t trim for the last few years so they’ve gotten too big. Is 8”-12” too much to remove? Thanks!

Thank you I have been looking for an explanation like you gave for a long time!
Everyone in 2021 "What is this frost you speak of in the winter".
Great information sire.
Great video! Spending a good deal of time practicing pruning different shrubs and trees this summer.

Great expert explanations. A gem among a sea of cyber-misguidance...
Can you please make a video on how to prune a conical yew? I can’t find any good videos on it

Great video, thank you for sharing.
Can you fix a boxwood that has been sheared for years to produce new growth in the inside of the plant by doing selective pruning?
Yes..by going in and out carefully into the stems or branches randomly to create openings so air and light goes through
hey john I was just wondering what time of year is best for hedge trimming a fir hedge

Excellent video. I learned a lot.

What did you decide to do?
Is the 3rd week of August too late in the summer?
Not at all here is Zone 6.
@@CTSCAPER thanks. I’m in 5b just a tiny bit north of you. Still ok for boxwood pruning?
@@roguepetunia Absolutely! You're good until late September.
