While we all are probably guilty of listening to ASMR that features such high and worthwhile delights such as the squishy sounds of shaving gel or the grotesque noises of up-close eating, I have always felt, and still feel, that the content put out by this lovely woman is the best use of this medium. I'd encourage those who can (and I understand many can't), to support this channel in any way you are able to.
Oh Kate.....you did it again....first Bede's classic and now this. Brava! Here's something that could interest you (but maybe you already know this....) and those who like literature and history. The germanic tribes that invaded Britannia renaming it England called all the non germanic people who lived there "walas" (so Cymru became Wales). I live in the southern part of an italian region that was subject to the Austro Hungarian Empire until 1918 and was unofficially named Welschtyrol (the official name for the whole region was South Tyrol) as it was inhabited by italian speakers. The german speaking people of modern South Tyrol (now Italy) still call the italians who live there (me) "welsch" (sometimes in a derogatory sense). You're great. Thanx and keep finding and reading these gems for us.
Yep. Both of those words stem from a Germanic root */walxa-/, whose meaning is somewhat unclear. It may refer simply to Romanized populations, though in Old English it acquired a meaning implying servility. Indeed, the words for "Welsh" and "enslaved person" are homonymous in later OE - there's a lot of ambiguity around its early usage.
