    FAQ:
"Can I do this with a Technician license in the United States?"
    - Yes. Technicians can access the VHF and UHF bands, and make use of repeaters.
"Are you still active in amateur radio?"
    - Not since I participated in the 2017 ARRL SSB Sweepstakes. The next question explains why.
"Why is your channel name themaritimegirl? You're not a girl!"
    - I began a gender transition 9 months after this video was uploaded, and have been living as a woman since then. Although I've never been harassed, this is the primary reason I don't go on the air as much now.
"Where can I read more about the IRG/UNB Amateur Radio Club/your amateur radio activities?"

themaritimegirl.....don’t worry about going on air. No one knows who you are. And no one is caring either. You do you B! And don’t worry about what others think. You’ll never get anywhere in life if you’re living for others!! The ONLY way to win in the game of live is living for YOURSELF!!

I really understand your feelings, remembering my first contact on CW in the 60s brings back memories. i haven't been on in over 15 years. Got my license in 1962 as a novice class license and then upgraded to technician in the 70s. Mostly talked to my brother W1IWM. When he died 15 years ago I went silent. I lost my interest in ham radio. Now, with the license coming up for renewal I decided to do the upgrade to general class also. That will happen at the next VE Session at a local amateur radio club here in Connecticut. I purchased a Baofeng BF-F8HF this week to monitor the 2 meter band and 400mhz band. Maybe I'll get excited over it again. Thanks for lighting a fire in me. K1MJL 73s

Brings back memories...I remember being more nervous [initially] as a tech on 2M nets than when I eventually advanced to HF. Radio is a cool hobby and we Hams have some of the best toys that can be had!

I've just started studying to take my exam so I'm not on the air as of yet. I agree with the other post. I really like this video. Your enthusiasm and excitement shine through. It's young people like you that give me hope for the future of this world. People who find value in things other than what the Kardashian's are up to. I like your statement "it's not a big deal but it is to me". I can assure you things like this are a big deal to a lot of us. Best of luck in everything you do!

i saw myself in your first contact. nerves and all. i made my first on the 145350 machine in dallas nc. a great foot print repeater. and when conditions peak. it reaches florida and Mount Mitchell is a 5 to 6 state repeater on adverage. Alabama, Tennessee N.C., S.C., Georgia, Virginia and Kentucky. ive been licenced sence 95. built my first computer from parts 96. and in 97 during field day. i wanted so to make contact with two distant 2 meyer contacts. im in concord n.c.. what i heard was coming from ohio and i heard the contact they were talking to. in Quebec. it wasnt legible but i heard their audio scraching in the whitenoise. i was using a ic211 in ssb with a 4 ele quad on a window washers pushup pole. about 12 feet up above the roof line of a 87 ford ranger. i wish i had the mirage b5030g, amp i have owned, that night. well now you know a bit of.my radioactiveness. oh, and i talked to the mir space station during a world series. i was working a pileup. so i flipped on that amp in my car. made the contact.

Most Hams don't remember their very first contact....it's not like the first time you had sex, which you always remember, but Hams do remember how they felt when they transmitted their first radio call, and then heard their call sign spoken back from a receiving station. Fifty years later, most Hams still feel that same excitement when they transmit their call sign over the air and then hear a receiving station repeat it back. It's
a validation that your little radio station has sent it's signal across considerable distances, often half way around the entire world, and someone heard your call and responds in kind. It's the magic of radio. And even though the public talks around the world on radios (otherwise known as cell phones) they take the technology for granted, never giving it a thought.
But when you build your own radio station, and use your own equipment to communicate with others, the magic of radio becomes very real to you, and when you make contacts you revel in the knowledge and wonder of this magic called "Radio". It's a feeling you never forget, and it's the reason so many Hams stay in Amateur Radio for their entire lives. Best of luck in making contacts and QSO's. '73

I just got licensed about 2 yrs ago and am also in the middle of a little break from the radio (only couple months). It's still exciting to make contacts on the air ... but I am gathering equipment to make the transition out of VHF (w/ my baofeng) to HF with multiple modes, hopefully a lot of digital. I especially like the HP calculator picture you have on the top of your channel ... HP calcs ROCK. There is so much stuff that can be done with radio that I know I'll get back into it, but getting all the equipment can be time consuming. Good luck with your experience. Thanks for the good video ... I hadn't heard of this net ... now I may have to try to make a contact on it, or checkin. AG7BY

A very cool hobby. Good video, like how you were calm for first time. I did CB radio for years when it was popular. i'v been meaning to take test, been thirty years ago from when i tried last time. There used to be a hugh ham fest by me for years i went to. Don't know if they still doing it.Enjoy it bro !

Welcome to the hobby. I got lucky, my dad was watching the website as much as I was and he called me first, so he was my first contact. I was nervous, even though it was to my dad. Hopefully you've found other nets to check into since then.

Great video mate. I'm 4 days into my license...I had the same feelings during my first qso! How great is the community, despite our grids?!

Congrats on entering the ham radio fraternity. Hopefully by now you've had a chance to check out HF as well and work some DX. Also, I hope you've had the chance to participate in Field Day, which is a great way of having fun while getting experience with rapid-fire contesting operations. Welcome aboard!
