Our engine is heeeeere 🥳 Say hello to our Nanni N.480! Opening up that crate and seeing a brand spanking new, totally clean and shiny bright blue engine is a moment I still grin about when it pops into my mind. Seeing an engine that clean is like the boat equivalent of the new car smell, a special moment in time that you can savor to the fullest knowing it will never look like that again. But the warm and fuzzies would quickly be put on pause as we realize that the hatch where we need to lower the engine down through is going to be one tiiiiiiight squeeze. So we fire up the fork lift, put our noggins together, and get to work! Could you fab a rail system to the ceiling of the engine room so you could lift engine components when needed? My vision would be tabs welded to the ceiling so the rail could be bolted up. Make a rack for the rail to store it against the hull.
I remember you fighting to lift the engine when you had to remove the gear box.

Just need two hooks in the "ceiling" and one independent lifting block in each. The hooks on the blocks is connected by a shackle.
By lifting one or both, you can freely position the engine in between those hooks. (all the way from hanging in only the front one, hanging on both, or hanging only on the rear one).
You could even have hooks with more lifting blocks to the side if you would need sideways motion, too.

On a side note, it is good to have a diesel that does not have all of the electronics lined up like ducks before it will crank up. Cruisers get into serious situations where the engine could save your boat and maybe your life. Large Mack trucks used to have air starters to crank their engines. If you had an air motor like a pneumatic drill motor that could pony on the back of your starter or replace your starter it would turn your engine over and it will crank. A regulator on an aqualung could reduce the 3000 psi down to 90 psi. This extra weight would be an air drill and a regulator and peace of mind.

Interesting to see your engine installation. I installed a Halyerd water separator end muffler system on our cat a few years ago and that lowered the exhaust sound by about a third. For comfort I would highly recommend the same system.
Good to see so many serious cruiserers are strated to look at alu-cats, I fell in love with the idea more than 20 years ago, but the money issue came in tha way.

    Why
I was in my local 711 and the son could not stop repeating, why, why, why. He was about four. At four you have no concept of the word Why. However, more pescient than most, this boy knew his dad would pay attention to why?
So I informed the Dad. The boy looked up at me and said, Thank You.
Learning the meaning of why complicates life for eternity. That said, it is an opportunity to keep making excellent progress.
As you continue to see, everything is much easier when they see you doing it. With the advent of why, the background to the process gets more complex, which is great.
This just popped into my head. Hopefully, you will see it. Big changes are ahead or already here.

They may not have the basic equipment required to remove that shiny blue beauty. Still, as I said very exciting and I can't wait for the next installments. You Guys always put a smile on my face and the Ozzies are a good laugh too. Ex US Navy Engine man here... make sure the engine mounts are flexible. Usually some kind of synthetic rubber in a captured design (so when rubber material finally breaks there are bolts that will keep rhe engine). Sort of like the engine mounts on a car. You should also be able to get to the packing around the screw shaft so you can change it in dry dock. Good to have some sound fire proof sound absorption in the compartment and also an automatic CO2 fire suppression system. Engine should draw air from above deck (not from compartment) and the air intake should have a system that allows air to pass but no water -- like a snorkel. Engine compartment should be air tight. Hope something I have said helps.

    • @JayDAnderson
      @JayDAnderson 53 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

One last thing... diesel engines can "Run Away" in that situation you can't shut the engine off and the RPM climbs until the engine catastrophically explodes. So you need to be able to shut down the air supply to stop the engine. Best if this is automated and based on the engine red line (max RPM).

PS you all should be wearing a tight fitting N95 mask while using abrasive to sand surfaces. Learn from my youthful mistake... I have over a dozen lung nodules of various sizes. Apparently there are fine particulates that your lungs cannot expelled so it instead encapsulates them sort of like an oyster does when it forms pearls. Not good. Looks like cancer in a CT-Scan.

Agree, Was thinking that alternators frequently have a long bolt on the pivot. Make sure there is clearance to get that out! Just about like trying to get things in and out of a Travel Trailer. I think some of the items go in before they put the door and trim on.
Years ago I helped someone take a hot tub out of their house. I had to take the door and trim off and out to get it out of the house. I found out after we got it out, it went in before the front door was installed on the house while they were building it.
The hot tub was at the narrowist place 37 inches, the door was 36 inches wide, after I took the door out I had 38½ inches.
Needless to say, when you volunteer to help someone, you always seem to get into more than you were led to believe.

Weld in some fixtures so you can bolt in a lift beam in the engine bay to support a hoist for future service. Fabricate the beam and bolt it to some storage brackets in an out of the way location. Of course it wouldn’t help get the engine out of the boat, but at least you could lift the engine to change motor mounts, or lift the electric motor if necessary.

  • @Naturalook
    @Naturalook 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

My truck has a very, very difficult engine fit... big ol' diesel... and we were experimenting with a turbo, so it had to go in and out multiple times... You need what we built, and front to back bar, with multiple attachments, so we could twist the engine in mid air... That way, next time you need it to go in and out, and your not in a super nice building, it ain't no big deal... Also, you should build a trapeze over the engine, with a chain hoist, which you will always want on hand, regardless. ....Oh, next time they build a boat, they should make the hood slightly bigger. 😁

Nice job getting the engine inside the boat. Now you said after you get all the measurements and holes done, you'll take it out again.
"SAY"!!! "WHAT"!!! Well, hopefully, you'll not have difficulty in doing so. I think getting the engine in was the easy part. So, I'll be interested in the episode reversing this action.
Happy Late Birthday Dan the boat-building man.
The Nanni Engine person seemed like a decent guy.
And unfortunately, you didn't video Dan making the Connector Plate. Looks great and very sturdy.
Cheers guys and girls catch you next video.

Theay make a lifting bar for engine installation, with an adjustable carrying point. It's controlled via an acme thread and a crank. You crank it forward or back to tilt as needed for direction of tilt. Might help a bit on the next lift. Interesting post and fun to watch....

Just pitch up the engine. What's it's dimension bottom to top? Is it less than the length of your hatch?
I love your 100% mechanical basis philosophy! As an aviator who has flown throughout many areas around the world, including into many austere airfields and flying conditions, I learned over the years to wisely use, but never fully rely upon electronic means which can often go bad. I've experienced GPS leading us more than a mile to the left of a destination airfield.
Overreliance upon electronics includes the realms of power (engines), controls and avionics. Having simpler mechanical systems and being proficient in them has saved my bacon on many occasions.
Kudos to your wisdom! I keenly await further revelations!

Had you considered that when you paint the engine room, instead of pulling the engine all the way out, suspend it in the engine room while you paint the bilge and lower half? You could possibly engineer a solution that you could leave in place in case you needed to lift the engine to get to the lower half, while in the water, etc. Maybe lifting eyes in the ceiling and a come-along?

The use of a poured in situ urethane engine mount is worth considering to prolong the integrity of your installation. The engine vibrations are not friendly to aluminium of an extended period of time. Fatigue is the enemy of aluminium.

@@sveinnygard8745yip. Yanmar from Japan have always made their engines. Been around for decades and loved in the marine world. They did market a Toyota long block once - 6 cylinder.
