This was awesome! I have 30 or more little water features, ponds, pots of water all around our property for the critters and I never feel like I have enough! I'm always looking for new ideas and I love yours. I never thought about using a sock so I'm definitely going to use your idea in my next wildlife water features. Thank you, Amy!
Thank you for sharing this!! I just got a new place and am obsessed with trying to help the wildlife in whatever ways I can. Was thinking the other day “would I be crazy if I just had a million little birdbaths, ponds and fountains scattered all around the garden??” Now I realize the answer is “no! Go for it!!!” Thanks for the inspiration 😂❤❤ Do you ever make videos about your water feature projects? That would be really neat
We have a lot off oaks and oak nuts comming down from August to February... witch was not handy for the tyni ponds. So I will trie again with your lovely clear film. On a spot half shadow and bit further from all the oaks. I did make hanging dishes under branches of trees. But bees , bumbles can drown. or young birds .. we let the leaves hang in a bit so they could get out. But oak is a kind of oak tannic acid and not good 😢. Also pine tree needles in bird feeders water is toxic😢... and killing. We learned the hard way .
It can be so frustrating when you try to do something lovely for nature and it goes wrong, but don't lose heart. Hanging water in shallow dishes with some stones in it for easy insect landing can be great, but you would need to put a little roof on them to keep the acorns out. I hope you do give it another try. I'll be thinking of you! 😊💖
@@TheGypsyVanners Awww thanks so much, that's really kind of you! After I posted it, I really worried that I had shown a bit TOO much of my personality and that the normal people would be frightened. So thank you very much for the reassurance and kindly subscribing! 🥰
I use a kiddie pool as a raincatcher and the birds love it. I keep a plank resting on the edge so ground critters can get out if they fall in. In the US we have floating organic pods called Dunks that keep mosquito larvae from hatching in any standing water, which is also desirable. A small piece of Dunk would work in a mini pond.
I hadn't heard of dunks, but that is really interesting! I looked them up and they use a beneficial bacteria to keep I the mozzies at bay, ingenious! I don't seem to be able to get them here in Northern Ireland. I did get mosquito larvae but because the water is so shallow and the birds frequent it they seemed to get eaten within 3 days anyway!
I would add mosquito dunks or bits to help control the population. Doesn't harm any other animals or birds. You could also add a battery operated aquarium air stone. You would need to place the battery piece in a waterproof container or ziplock bag.
You did a great job of instructing us. Some commentators blab, others don't explain well enough. You were perfect, with just enough visuals. I did something similar, but I didn't create a ramp, and I used round river rocks. It is probably too slippery for little creatures. Also, I never thought to add plants. Brilliant & Thanks
Thank you for this wonderful idea with the plants. I'm in zone 9b, where in July it gets very hot. I've noticed the paper wasps were drinking out of a tall glass vase, outside my front door. Unfortuntately, they too can drown :( I replaced it with a large terracotta dish, that I placed stones in. I just have to refill it with water on very hot days. And the best part is, the terracotta dish keeps the water temp, at a cooler level !
That sounds amazing, and so nice of you to think kindly of the wasps. They are such a valuable part of the ecosystem even though they can be danger with those nasty stings.
Many birds do not care for their feathers in cold water, but rather by taking a sand bath. This helps them against parasites in their feathers. So why not provide both? Your idea is wonderful and with a small sandy area next door it would be perfect. Thanks for the great idea.❤
What a lovely creation. And -it actually seems do-able. No fancy pumps, pond liners and God knows what. The birds love it. And thank you for the graphics at the beginning too-made it all very clear. I drowned a creature accidentally by it having no way out. Haven’t gotten over it. (PS- you sound like you were perhaps once one of my mob , lol). Thank you very much
Lovely! I would elevate it out of the reach of neighborhood cats, and always site near bushes or other cover so the birds, squirrels, and other visitors are no overly exposed to flying predators.
Under shade or cover is best anyway as it will help keep the water cooler and cleaner, but not sure how you'll keep the cats away! We've got a similar problem, a sparrow hawk seems to have moved in nearby and it just loves all the poor little birds that come to our garden. I know it's all part of nature's cycle, but I still feel so sorry for them! 🦅😢
Thanks! I was really lucky that my Mum got me interested in the garden and wildlife and growing my own food from an early age, and I love sharing that with other families and getting the kids involved! 😊
You could put in a pump if you wanted to. It will help to keep the water a little bit clearer, but it will also reduce the benefit to some insects that prefer still water. 🐦⬛🐝❤️
Cool 😎!! This was Definitely worth watching. Love all the ideas- only One I ever heard of- about leavin some rocks above water level still there are no Fatalities!! The sock idea is Great! It makes it all so neat & tidy. I’ve Got to make one of these for my shady little porch. It’s SO Awfully Hot here & I’ve got water Bowls out there but this is so much Prettier! If you're in a lovely hot climate keep it in full shade so the water stays cool for your wildlife, and this also helps stop it growing algae. So glad you enjoyed it! 🥰
Lovely ideas here. What does maintenance of this pot look like? Do you fill it up daily, especially in summer? Do you ever have problems with mosquitoes? I appreciate everything you do! 🙏
if the water becomes cloudy, simply tip the pot to drain as much as you can and refill. Remove any leaves or debris that falls into the pond by. Being in a cooler climate, we have less trouble with mosquitoes than you might if you're living somewhere hot, but birds and amphibians eat mosquito larvae, so you shouldn't have too much trouble. If it's very hot and dry, you may need to top your pot up everyday here in Northern Ireland. The rain mostly does it for me! ☔🤣
@@georgiepants76You don't need them. I have had these little ponds for over 20 years - some have fish in them but either way if the fish don't eat them the birds will! 😊
I'm so happy to hear that you're going to try it! Birds get all the attention, but there are so many other beautiful creatures who love a drink, too 💞🐝
I live in really hot country ... I have a water bath for bitds and one for bees I put stones and big pebbles and the bitds sing in my trees right outside my window ❤
That’s such a great idea and so cleaver, I love the sock idea as well . I have a tiny garden and this would be perfect to attach the birds 🦅. I’d loved watching that bird have a bath. Thank you. 👍
That is so cute! I wondered how a small solar fountian would work in it? I have a large cement bird bath. I put a piece of brick in it so the water wouldn't be to deep for smaller birds. The bees like it to, 😊❤
You could certainly try one. It may put off some of the insects that prefer still water, but I know that birds love a gentle fountain to bathe. Then if you try it, please send me a pic. I'd love to see! 🥰
This is great, only yesterday I put a flattish plastic tub on the roof outside my window to give the birds water, they usually knock over ice cream tubs ( square ones) so I thought the flattish shape would be more stable the birds are going crazy using it to bath in and I had to change the water numerous times yesterday as there was a line waiting for the bath, the pigeons and crow couple and the magpies are all arguing over it now, it must feel so nice in this hot weather. Thanks for explaining how to keep the water clear, I have a tin of mint and will try this, there's a couple of areas in the garden proper where different birds visit so I will try to make a couple, they love water so much and always make a point of putting water out for the bigger animals like the cats and foxes but will bear in mind the steps and easy exit for little guys.
It doesn't need to be pretty as long as there's different depths so nothing drowns. It can just be a pot with some water in it and the wildlife will come 🐦🐦⬛🐝
Thanks so much for subscribing! I filmed those the first day I put it in the garden. I put a camera on a tripod and left it there for about an hour and all of them just showed up!
Yes, I'm afraid Mozzies do like still water, but the birds and predatory insects that visit can keep these down (they eat all of my wrigglers, but I admit we don't get many compared to some places in the world). If you're in a really mosquito prone area, it can be best to just have a dish or water with a few stones in it for easy bee landings, and plan to tip out the water every few days to get rid of the larvae.🐝🐦
It's amazing how enjoyable it is to see, and hear, the birds in the water ❤ I didn't see that you put in any of the other 2 underwater plants. Will this water really stay clean enough with just those 2 plants you put in?
I'm afraid you and a few other people have caught that. I accidentally edited out the bit where I put in the floating water plants! Those go in at the end. I'm going to do a follow-up video to show what my pot looks like at the end of a long summer being used by birds and other animals. It is a little bit slimy, but it's a wildlife pond not a fish aquarium. It's supposed to be natural so a little bit of slime or algae is absolutely fine. The birds and insects won't mind at all! Thanks for the comment 🥰
I've heard that dunks are really good for dealing with mozzies or you could adapt the design to a shallow dish with some stones in it and that way you can tip the water out everyday. It means that you don't have aquatic plants for other water insects, but at least you avoid the mosquitoes. We all want to help wildlife, but human health has to be important in there somewhere too! 🥰🐝
The plants help to keep it clear, and putting it in a shaded spot will help, too. If it does yet a bit mucky, because it's a small pot it's easy to tip out most of the water, scoop out any debris, and refill (rainwater is ideal but tap water is fine if you don't have rainwater).
Lovely idea 💡 ❤. I too, wonder about mosquitoes. I wonder if this could be aerated a little, like with a pet style water Fountain hose, just for a little during the day
We don't get many mosquitoes here, and the birds seem to eat the little wrigglers right away- If I ever see any they are always gone the next day. If you do have lots of mozzies where you are, you can alter the design so you can tip out the water regularly to dump the larvae. It might mean not having plants and sacrificing that habitat for insects, but you'll still be giving birds and bees and other wildlife a place to drink and bathe. 😊
I really liked this video and plan to create a little backyard pond myself today! The sock pocket idea is ingenious. Thank you for the inspiration and great information.
Beautiful idea but here in Italy it doesn't work out well. In the summer it can reach 38° but I always have a large bowl of water cleaned every day and the birds, bees and lizards love it!
@@amykellygardening Yes we have a large family here adults and babies, it's lovely to watch them grow ❤ and also many praying mantis. Nature is food for the soul ❤
G'day Sydney, I'm from Adelaide originally! Lovely to hear from you. Definitely in the shade- in a warm climate the algae will grow really quickly in full sun. So full shade and scoop out any leaves that fall in as eucalyptus in the water can be toxic. 🥰🇦🇺
Question: Lovely video and love the sock idea. How often do you change the water? Or do the plants you suggest ensure the water stays healthy eternally so you never have to change it?
Keep it in a shaded area, scoop out any leaves etc. that fall in, top up with rainwater if possible (if you don't have rain water tap water is fine), and with any luck the plants will keep the water clear. If it gets really mucky you can just tip it out and refill with fresh water, but avoid this if possible as it will kill any dragonfly nymphs or other baby insects that might be growing up in your mini pond. 💞
I love this idea! I have two questions: I didn’t see you add the underwater plants…do you add those on top of the small stones? And, do you suggest placing the “pond pot” in the sun or shade? Thank you again! I’m so ready to create my own!
Keep the pot in the shade if you can. And I'm afraid I was overzealous with the editing and accidentally cut out the bit with the water plants. You just float them in the water at the end. A few people have noticed that, so embarrassing! I'll have to be more careful next time! 😳
Great ideas. I've been wanting to put a simple water feature with aquatic plants in my backyard. I have hanging bird baths but I haven't seen birds go to them. All God's creatures need water. Thanks Amy 🌞🐦
Wunderbare Idee wirklich ne Anleitung, vielen Dank dafür....... Das mache ich nach, denn ich habe viele Bienen und Vögel eingeladen, nur G "" Getränke" vergessen Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland/Bayern von Sylvia
So I only have a patio garden & don’t think have any birds visiting but do have bees & sometimes butterflies…if I got space I might do this. What a wonderful thoughtful idea Subscribed Will check out the channel later
Thanks so much for subscribing! You can use a pot or container or any size, especially if it's for bees! You'll need to top it up more often the smaller it is, but it's so exciting when you see a bee going for a drink. 🐝💖
You can grow any type of mint or water cress (the sort you use in salads or sandwiches) in the mini pond, but if neither are available hopefully a local pond supply shop or plant seller will be able to help you. Thanks so much for the comment!
Hi Amy, I love this idea 🐸 glad I found your channel! What part of the world are you gardening in? I'm in the UK zone 8b. How do I stop the water from freezing over in winter?
In a tiny pot like that, in your area it probably will freeze no matter what you do. Try moving it into a more sheltered location closer to the house, or just plan to put out some fresh water each day in another container for the birds over the winter. I'm in Ireland, so our winters do vary quite a bit! Our "average" winter temperatures are 39.2°F - 44.6°F, but that is because we get warmer spells interspersed with cold weather. It often gets MUCH colder, a few years back we had lows of just 5°F! I think we're actually pretty close to USDA zone 8b, hard frosts and light snows mostly, so my videos should be a good fit for you 🥰
I love this, very pretty. Question: how do clean the bird poop out of it? I have shallow plastic bowls for the birds and I refresh the water up to 4 times a day because of course the little darlings poop in there. How do you clean yours?
That must be frustrating for! Bird poop is fertiliser for your plants in the water, it's creating a miniature ecosystem when you add plants. You may still need to tip some of the water out and refresh it if it gets really mucky but hopefully not 🫣
This was awesome! I have 30 or more little water features, ponds, pots of water all around our property for the critters and I never feel like I have enough! Beautiful idea but here in Italy it doesn't work out well. In the summer it can reach 38° but I always have a large bowl of water cleaned every day and the birds, bees and lizards love it!
@@angellove9767 wow! Lizards as well, how fantastic ❤️🦎
@@amykellygardening Yes we have a large family here adults and babies, it's lovely to watch them grow ❤ and also many praying mantis. Nature is food for the soul ❤
Great ideas, thank you
Thank you for the lovely message! ❤️
Wonderful presentation! 💥Thank you for sharing this and your personality is lovely.
Thank you so much!
Love this! Where do you position it- sun/shade, amongst shrubs so the birds have shelter from predators? Lovelyvideo thank you ( Sydney Australia)
G'day Sydney, I'm from Adelaide originally! Lovely to hear from you. Definitely in the shade- in a warm climate the algae will grow really quickly in full sun. So full shade and scoop out any leaves that fall in as eucalyptus in the water can be toxic. 🥰🇦🇺
Great idea did one last month for my Grandchildren ❤
Wonderful! I'm so glad you did! I'm sure they loved it. I hope you've got lots of wonderful birds now 🐦🥰
Question: Lovely video and love the sock idea.
Love this. ❤
Thanks 🥰

Thank you! 🥰❤️
That was amazing!
So glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely end result
Birdie enjoying it

What a great idea, thank you for sharing!♥
You are so welcome! 💖
Great ideas. I've been wanting to put a simple water feature with aquatic plants in my backyard. I have hanging bird baths but I haven't seen birds go to them. All God's creatures need water. Thanks Amy 🌞🐦
A bit of water makes a big difference, I hope you do get a mini pond set up! Thanks for the comment 🙂

Thanks so much for subscribing! You can use a pot or container or any size, especially if it's for bees! You'll need to top it up more often the smaller it is, but it's so exciting when you see a bee going for a drink. 🐝💖
Fabulous, definitely going to do this ❤
That is wonderful! I hope you get as much enjoyment from yours as I do from mine! 🐦💦
Amazing 🎆
Thank you!
Excellent video, now I must try and find some of the plants as I’m in another country. Thanks 👋
You can grow any type of mint or water cress (the sort you use in salads or sandwiches) in the mini pond, but if neither are available hopefully a local pond supply shop or plant seller will be able to help you. Thanks so much for the comment!
sweet gardan goood. job me
Thanks for the lovely comment, so glad you enjoyed it!
You may still need to tip some of the water out and refresh it if it gets really mucky but hopefully not 🫣
@@amykellygardening bird droppings contaminate the water and I dont want them to get sick. I'll figure something out, thanks:)
I just love it!!! What a wonderful idea!!
Thanks Butterfly 😁🦋
