WaterLily sent me this WindLily accessory for my WaterLily hydro turbine for review. It's a fantastic piece of equipment for niche applications requiring access to strong wind. It starts generating at 7 miles per hour of windspeed, 15 Watts at 16 miles per hour, and all the way up to 23 Watts at 22 miles per hour. It's best suited for charging of communications, small-ish batteries, and LED lighting of small areas.

~11 watts - not bad! You could charge a cell phone and power a few LED lights. For a tiny, portable turbine, that ain’t too shabby.
Charging power banks seems like a good fit for this little turbine. Lets you use the phone while the power bank collects electricity to recharge it later.

Being that heat will move air, and they have stove fans. Entirely possible to use a stove fan.
this could be awesome for people living in vans or doing long offroad trips to charge their electronics or use it directly for light in the evening/night
If the engine is running, it is better to just use the ports in the vehicle. Much more power. Typical accessory port is 12V at 5A. Might work well when stopped to avoid draining the vehicle battery.

I see this installed in a round picnic table with cell phones charging on the table top; high enough to be safe, but close enough to eliminate losses.

i think for this the best type of storage battery would be lithium, not lead acid, as lead acid has a faster natural discharge rate then lithium, its quite a good design really, would as you say keep a phone alive in camping situations and probably on a windy night power a small led or 2
You forgot to mention that with Lead acid batteries they have much greater life than lithium.

Maybe you can go to hardware and find tiny speed nuts for them screws to make them captive.
So I purchased a WaterLily in December last year with the Windlily kit, I ordered it in December 2020.. I sent over 13 e-mails asking about when it was going to arrive, and every time I was told it would be a few weeks. It never did. I eventually gave up on ever expecting it to arrive, and sure enough it showed up on my door step, 11 months later and several hundred dollars spent last year. No Tracking information, nothing. I did not receive all the fancy connectors he shows here in this video nor are they available on the site. Just keep in mind - if you order one of these, expect a delay... a very long one.
The fancy connectors are/were an accessory kit they offer seperately. I don't have any comment about the delay, I'm not a part of that company.
A way to mount it onto a fence T post could be interesting. Would want a way to lift it 1-2 feet above the post but they are so common in open areas due to field fences.
Lash your tripod to the fence post?
@@JoeMalovich Skip the tripod and lock the fitting onto the post to use that as the support the windmill sits above. Just need something to lift the blades high enough above any fence/wire strands as the post is already driven into the ground it will not have much movement
Great indepth review , didn't know it generated in AC before rectified to DC. Don't understand how watt meter showing over one amp while raw reading about half that figure.
So I later figured out the meter consumes about .3A which explains most of the discrepancy I think. I admit it's not well done and I now realize that.
would love to get this down here in Australia. have tried to buy it, but was told they cant ship to Sydney....and on top of that, the whole thing is on pre-order only... i cant find one anywhere..sub'd like your stuff. tis why i realy want one for bush, as i teach kids survival stuff, when we are not in Cov 19 isolations....damn Corona V....

Unfortunately the carrier that we used to ship to Australia has stopped accepting packages (they used extra space on commercial flights, but those flights aren't currently flying). So, we cannot ship to Australia right now--hopefully this will change by the fall when people start travelling again.

RPM would be too low and drag forces extreme. I doubt the bearings could handle it.

what power generator are you using?
First I tried a pocket anemometer, I wasn't happy with it so I bought a BT100 anemometer, this one amzn.to/3qYcZFP that I have been happy with.

If you have an excellent windy site then it is doable
3 blades catch more wind and are much more efficient than more blades. So I would remove 3 of them
With the sun and the wind I will travel forever. . . since I consume electricity to travel, why not recover some of it using a mini or micro wind generator, with vertical axis, placed externally somewhere in the car and a system of solar panels? These systems will deliver energy. . forever. (I mean: a moving object, like a car, will create a vortex in the air, the wind. When it hits the wind turbine, it will generate electricity that will recharge the batteries).
Is this motor a low torque motor?

Hmm, Is it suitable for salty conditions? Like if your sailing at sea in your 21 ft:r can you use the waterlily as a towed generator when your on the move and when your at anchor move it to the mas in the windlily configuration?
Yes and Yes, it's all plastic and stainless. It works fantastic as a tow behind as the water speeds are closer to the sweet spot. Your 21ft boat sails at about 5 knots in good wind right? that should be around full power output. My dad has a 22ft sailboat that was a staple of my childhood (freshwater).
Note that not all stainless lasts forever in salty conditions so I can't say it will last forever. I can't speak for the servicability of the turbine however if those few stainless components ever do need replaced.
Yeah, the grade of stainless matters a lot. Where I'm from they sell two different grades of stainless fasteners. One IIRC is 316, after a few years of year round exposure to the sea, it wil have a few spots of surface rust. The other kind rusts pretty much the same as plain carbon steel in the same conditions. Works great in the garden though.

It's all 18-8 and brass. You can replace the hardware with 316. You can replace the bearings with ceramic bearings (size r4). Supposedly no corrosion complains so far though.
Same as blowing air with another fan to another fan.

It is better only in very specific circumstances. You need a bunch of wind and not much sun.

Pretty easy to get a water transfer camo print. You can buy the paper for it and print at home
I'm very disappointed in that they don't make a WindLily for the customers of the first WaterLily... I'm not going to buy it twice.
How much more effecient is the USB version vs the 12V versions using a usb car adaptor i wonder?
I think most car adapters just limit the voltage, the amps stay the same. USB version does 3A, the 12V version would do maybe 1.2A to 1.5A
@@JoeMalovich that's a good point. Bugger as I just ordered the 12v version :/ Id have to find essentially an MPPT for bumping the amps up and drop the volts down to 5v.

@@JoeMalovich That might be an option then ill look into that, although as its for hiking to rivers with gold for up to 2 weeks at a time, weight/space could be an issue. Will see if i can exchange for the USB version many thanks.
@@MrDingaling007 or a 12v lead acid with a cheap low voltage disconnect can be used to power any number of 12v devices and USB chargers.
Another cheap option is to use a lithium battery that has a built in BMS which has low voltage cutout built in, something like this amzn.to/3rIBfux which can then be used to power your 12V devices and USB chargers.
I would be careful with any chargers as they draw some power even when not charging so disconnect all loads of you aren't actively using them. Just something I advise with low power generators like the windlily products.

Longer blades add drag so you get more low end torque but it won't get up to high enough RPMs
@@JoeMalovich and that won’t increase power? When we look at big wind turbines they were small just 27m in diameter with 850 kW max and today a 162 m diameter rotor can output 6 MW with the same wind speed and yes the rpms are lower, but transmission is different.

@@PaulC112 yes. But do note that some solar generators can't charge up fully on only 14.4V. That would be something worth experimenting with first.

@@PaulC112 if this is a mobile project then the windlily is a good but expensive option for the output. For a fixed installation you would be best served by a larger turbine built for that use.
Have you tried solar? It's often a better solution except in specific situations..
Plastic parts. Arctic winter weather. Wind. Not a good combination. Seeing the Arctic frequently gets to -40, you'll end up with a lot of plastic bits flying off in the distance and no turbine left.
we've tested it all winter in NL, Canada, take it down for storms, that's it!

Interstening, though I operate decently sized hydro plants, couple hundred kW and ranging from Kaplan from 21st century to older Francis from 1920s and all have even number of blades.
as the video says you can run it with 3 if you prefer... but you will lose out in low speed conditions.
