The answer is of course "5 Clan Wolf 'Mechs", because nothing can get through that plot armour!
But in terms of fighting machines, I typically favour heavier Stars, so let's try a Summoner Prime, Timber Wolf Prime, Mad Dog Prime, Turkina Prime, and Hellbringer B. This would (hopefully!) provide a nice mix of long and short range firepower, with a couple of jumping 'Mechs to try and bypass Comstar trickery!

As a fan of Clan Wolf probably due to overexposure, this is so true and I kind of hate that it's a thing. I'm fine with them winning against over other clans but it happens just way too much and it kind of loses all meaning when it happens.

The problem with Tukayyid is that Comstar rigged the fight to favour anti-clan tactics
To win Tukayyid you have to fight like a spheroid, armed with clan tech and just live with the dezgra. (You can do that since you will have survived the battle)
Therefore I propse we turn the grass lands AGAINST the defending comstar forces.
We bring an Artic Cheetah, it shall advance ahead of the Star. Using stealth to mark targets for a Mad Dog with indinceray LRMS.
The Cheetah will then disengage, burning everything it can with its flamer.
The resulting fire storm will force the Comstar forces to abandon their prepared position and meet us on the open field, or stay behind and burn.
Then, ideally send in the Night Gyrs. But those don't exist yet so we'll need a different heavy assault design that can run cool.
Probably Summoners or Hellbringers with loadouts specialized for long range and just try to keep out of the fire pit.
Seriously tho it makes me sad the Clans abandoned laser heat sink tech because think how much chaos you could sew with a machine like the Pirana armed with flamers that never overheats fighting in the middle of the raging wildfire its weapons create.
Nothing could get close to it without overheating!

Oh, I know exactly what to bring.
Two King Crabs mocked up to look like Daishis.
Two Thunderbolts made to appears as Thors.
A Catapult with "arms" so it looks like a MadCat.
I paint these in the colors of the nearest other Clan so the Falcons won't be alerted by the IFF discrepancies, and make them look damaged so not too many questions will be asked. Then we wander around looking for tactical opportunities, like jumping isolated Stars, or claiming we're trying to link up with our other forces so we can get at Falcon command posts or supply dumps. We can also spot for artillery. But if we can't find those targets, we just run away, claiming that there are ComGuard forces in the area to draw Falcons off from Our Blessed Order's main detachments, thus helping the Clanner scum to be taken apart piecemeal. What's a monolithic telecomms company good for if you can't spread some lies around?

Because I like a challenge (and snakes) I'm going to go with Steel Viper and see if I can make something that can survive The Devil's Bath. And in honour of Zeta Galaxy and their role in extricating Alpha and Gamma Galaxies from the trap laid for them, I'm going to make it all Second-Line 'mechs too.
Speed and mobility are of the essence here, every 'mech having jump jets to avoid the geysers and mud-pits. The heaviest element of the formation is a Phoenix Hawk IIC. I realise this is an odd choice, but it's mobile, can still dish out a decent punch, and most importantly, runs very cool. And worst comes to worst, if the Com Guard want to fight in melee, it's big enough that a punch is going to send anything short of another Assault 'mech reeling. It's biggest shortcoming is ammo dependancy however, so effort should be made to make each shot count.
Backing it up is another Steel Viper special, a Black Python. Although a hot 'mech, it can use it's mobility to duck out of LOS to cool off, and even cycling it's weapons it's a reliable damage dealer due to its heavy pulse laser armament and a targeting computer on top. It's going to have to be a lot more careful amongst the hot mud and the geysers, but it can still be devastating at any range if managed properly.
A Vapor Eagle is the first Medium in the star so far. Everything that applies to the Black Python also applies to it, though the Vapor Eagle is a little less heat sensitive. It's one of the most dangerous mediums the Steel Vipers can field in 3052, able to take on most IS heavies and even some Assaults on even terms. Still that heat needs to be watched carefully in an environment like the Devil's Bath, with hit and run tactics to alternate between heating up and cooling off.
The second medium is a Conjurer. It runs moderately cool, has a similar weapons fit and has the same speed and jump range as the Vapor Eagle, so makes a good tag-team partner for it.
Last but not least is a Horned Owl. It's a well-armoured light, has the same movement profile as the mediums and an all pulse laser armament ensures accuracy.
The overall tactics are to strike and fade, using the features of the Devil's Bath to cover their approach and avoid retaliation. Yes there's some IS 'mechs that could chase the Star down, but bar one or two exceptions all of them are medium or smaller 'mechs, and even in the case of the scant few heavies (and the one Assault I can think of) that could chase them, would be sorely outgunned. And any forces sent to chase down this star are forces not facing Alpha and Gamma Galaxies as they push through.

Since I'm one of those Warden Wolf fans, and I know my Clan is landing last, I know Logistics will be the name of the game. Hence, a heavy energy load out:
Dire Wolf A; Storm Crow Prime; Timber Wolf TC; Timber Wolf A; and a Warhawk C (one of my favorite Mechs since MW2).

  • @Versudan
    @Versudan 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Star would be:
    1x Cougar - Configuration H
    1x Nova - Configuration U
    1x Black Python 2
    1x Executioner - Configuration I
    1x Direwolf - Configuration C
Name of the game is ECM cover, Jump Jets, (relatively) high speed and a focus on maneuverability with a respectable energy heavy or energy focused loadout on every mech. The Cougar, Nova and Black Python run picket screens for the two assaults. This tactic and equipment loadout will stop the mechs being targeted for long range missile spam or focused bombardment, allowing them to spread out and react quickly to threats and have the equipment needed for a protracted engagement. Then when the time comes, get in, do damage and get out again before the enemy can respond.

I wonder if the battle of Tukayyid influenced the Jade Falcons to create the partial wing in order to improve the jump capabilities of their mechs. Considering how pivotal the use of jumping mechs were to accomplishing their objectives, I wouldn't be surprised.

To start with: A Timberwolf Prime. She will get you through any situation you can imagine, very punchy, fast, well armored, a solid focus of your star that the others can form around. Followed by a Turkina Prime. This baby has the perfect balance between piercing and crit seeking weaponry to deal with heavy and assault mechs. My third pick is a Stormcrow. Again a no brainer choice, you cant go wrong with one of these. I back this up with a Viper as a skirmisher/bodyguard whose going to take on light mechs that try to fish for back shots on the bigger mechs and smoke out snipers in heavy terrain using its jumpjets. Lastly a nova due to its flexibility. It can fill allmost any role while still being punchy and maneuverable.
I didnt pick any light omni mechs because i know that they would be the first to fall under the constant barrage of artillery fire (Artillery fire doesnt care about your move modifier). Same for mechs like the hellbringer wich while heavily armed, has very little armor and would falter even under light artillery fire. Most of the mechs except the turkina are on the speedier side and pack enough smaller weapons to deal with the mass of vehicles that the comguard will also throw at you, but still my choices have enough heavy firepower to melt any comguard battlemechs that do enter the fray.
If possible i would also have elementals on all my mechs, but we where talking about a mech star i believe so that would be a huge addition.

If we are going with overall energy heavy load outs, it is hard for me to look beyond the IIC designs, though they may not be as mobile as their frontline Omnimech brethren. The backbone of the Star would be a Marauder IIC paired with a Warhammer IIC for long range projected particle based firepower, while the later also acts as a bodyguard with it's secondary battery of five medium pulse lasers. For reconnaissance, potential anti-infantry work and back stabbing, a Locust IIC, because what is better than a single emotional support ER small laser? Eight of them of course! To complete the Star we have twin Griffin IICs to act as harassers or rapid response fire support with their ER large laser and LRMs while staying very mobile. Oh and Zellbrigen is off the table.

    Gladiator TC
    Timberwolf TC
    Vulture S
    Grendel Prime

All these mechs are very jumpy, hit like trucks, and aren’t too reliant on ammunition. There are 2 probes to work against ambushes, some stuff for infantry, and a reasonable but notable amount of pulses. Last year I ran a Tuakkyid Campaign as the Jade Falcons using the Catalyst sublimate. Rolled on the mech tables, with the caveat I had to have the mech.
This the Binary that took the field: Grendel Prime, Summoner D, Hellbringer B, Turkina B, Fire Moth A, Black Lanner B, Summoner A, Night Gyr C, Nova Prime, Stormcrow B.
The Stormcrow B and the Summoner D both tied with the most kills at 7. The Stormcrow B's Ultra AC/20 decimated other lights and mediums. The Summoner D's energy weapons, targeting computer, and anti infantry machine guns made it my go to mech

If I were the Jade Falcons and needed to secure the river crossing on Tukayyid, I'd have a jumpjet Puma tasked to provide radar and targeting and then the rest of the star will be composed of assaults with long range energy weapons and/or LRMs. The Puma will park itself on the bridge while the assaults park themselves in the river a bit away from the bridge (to avoid damage if the bridge is detonated) and form a firing line. Then I just let the assaults go ham on alpha-striking or sniping as much as they want because the river provides free cooling.
Otherwise, I would find another place to ford the river even if it is tens of kilometers away and cross at night. At that point, any Jade Falcon clan star would work but I'd probably go with a full star of Timberwolves with jumpjets and equipped primarily with energy weapons and the emotional support flamethrowers. The jumpjets allow the Timberwolves to get into any position to pick off armored/fortified units and the flamethrowers are specifically to torch infantry. If anything, after I picked off the armored units, I would just start a firestorm and let the wind torch the rest of the city and its defending infantry.

I really like Smoke Jaguars Tactics and trinary organisation, wear them down with lighter weight stars, while they are tied up bring in your heavier star and pummel them at range while you smash your heavy machines right in their face when they can not hope to stop you breaking their resistance. And seeing as how Clan Blood Spirit was never to participate I will represent them as an assault star with 2 assaults and 3 heavies.
Dire Wolf A: Accurate weapons, deep ammo bins, ams. I think its a big ticket.
Warhawk Prime: I think its going to ruin some nerds day
Timber Wolf A: I think its the best version for this formation
Summoner Prime: Its fine I guess, I just didn't want to bring another timber wolf, preferably a C. And its way less BV2 than a Night Gyr, which you were also using.
Ebon Jaguar: I wanted to use a War Hawk A, but I feel like this does the same job better while also being vaguely timber wolf adjacent.
Comstar list almost all got upgraded to Elite to match. Split their list between two Princess bots, had one hold back and one move up. Painted comstar in block green and picked a map with alot of hills and forest (30x30 tin), which was tactical and in no way because Smoke Jag Alpha Galaxy looks really similar to the normal bright white.
R1 Warhawk landed a headshot on a 12 to hit round 1 to a poor Rakasha. Thus is life.
R2 King Crab returned the favour to the Summoner, who is forced to eject when the engine goes critical.
R3 Warhawk has a arm ripped off by the second Rakasha. King Crab gets beat up.
R4 Devastator rips apart the Timber Wolf with 3 head shots. Last Rakasha is blown apart, explosion knocks out Warhawk pilot. Ebon Jag unloads AC10s in rapid fire mode on devastator, gets a headshot of his own. Line of sight lost with king Crab, I think it overheated. Not sure how.
R6 King Crab ejects. Dire wolf scores a head shot with its gauss on the devastator. Ebon Jag puts a bust of autocannon fire in the cockpit and scores another headshot. I have no idea where the Warhammers have run to.
So I spent 20 turns looking for these two warhammers, I cannot find them. I think they might have JJ'ed into the lake and be at the bottom. I have 2000BV more, two mostly fresh mechs, I'm just going to call that a win.

Five Timberwolves, what do you mean I'm not allowed?
Ok, so as a Clan Wolf Heavy Star, a Highlander IIC 1, a Timberwolf A as it's bodyguard, a Hellbringer Prime to help root out ambushes and make return fire more diffcult, then a Nova Prime and a Viper Prime for skirmishing. The two mediums and the Hellbringer move in front using the Active Probe to find the Comstar ambush (because it's always an ambush). When they find the enemy the Viper lights the burners and sprints around like madman, the Hellbringer and the Nova flank in the opposite direction to the Viper whilst the Highlander and the Timby open up with the LRM/Gauss/PPC combo at whoever was unfortunate enough to be caught in the open.
The idea is to force the Comguards out of their prepared positions by moving fast, being spread out and threatening to flank them if they don't react. The Viper uses it's speed and AMS to avoid damage, it doesn't have to attack as such, just be very fast and get behind the enemy. The Hellbringer stays at range and leans on the ECM/AMS as it gives harassing fire with the PPCs, if anyone tries to close it down the Nova comes into play. The two big mechs stand and slug it out from as long a range as possible, although if anyone wants to get close to 6 Medium Pulse lasers and 18 Streak SRMs they're welcome to.
At least, that's how it works in theory. If the enemy moves to an urban environment, I have enough energy weapons to blow up buildings until it's no longer an urban environement.

    • @MechanicalFrog
      @MechanicalFrog  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

My personal choice has always been a modified Summoner D, swapping out the mgs for a streak SRM 2 and the AMS for an experimental LAMS. I may not win, but it won't be a loss through attrition.

It may just be my post-Tukayyid Falcon brain talking but I think two things when I think of extended campaigns against the Inner Sphere: flexibility and minimal logistics. So here's what I'm thinking for a Star: Turkina B (of course), Marauder IIC (not an Omni but you can't say no to that loadout), Stormcrow Prime (also of course), Timber Wolf A (because I always need a Timber Wolf), and my curve-ball... It's not original or imaginative, but a star of Timber Wolf Primes is hard to go wrong with. One of the most versatile omnimech primes in the clan arsenal to this day. Sure, more realistically, you might have to settle for a star of Vultures, or if you needed a hard breakthrough assault, Kodiaks and Dire Wolves would have been better, but for for general battlefield flexibility, 5 Timber Wolves. Or maybe 4 carrying elementals. Actually, probably a good idea to have an AA capable mech in the mix, so an Orion or Rifleman IIC, though at this point I'm dangerously close to combined arms savvy and being called unclanlike by most of the clans at Tukkayid who hadn't learned the lessons yet. The snark answer equivalent of five Thugs would be five Mad Cats, but that's not any fun. I'll approach this from the perspective of Falcons who have a slight idea of what's going on and, chastised properly by my Khan, I would not bid away my battlearmor like some stravag amphibian.
The nucleus of the star would be an Executioner TC, a variant designed specifically for Tukayyid. Definitely energy heavy, but terrifyingly accurate and fast for its weight class as well as jump capable and armed with an active probe to sniff out the ComGuard freebirths and any surprises they might be trying to hide.
Just as heavily armored and as fast (for an assault mech) as its bigger brother, the second mech of the star would be a Warhawk C. Again, the focus is on highly accurate energy weapons fire to punish those who dare stand between us and our manifest destiny.
The third mech of the star is another variant forged and tested at Tukkayid, a Timber Wolf TC. Not only fully jump capable, this mech also relies on highly accurate large pulse lasers. It bears reminding that the Timber Wolf can likely outmaneuver almost anything those freebirth vermin would put in front of it.
Much like the star's Executioner has a "grounded" counterpart the star's fourth member, a Timber Wolf A, joins its sibling in flanking and end run maneuvers.
The last member of the star would have been another Timber Wolf, however its pilot questioned my authority in front of our Khan and now enjoys a broken jar, arm, and several ribs. Consequently, the star is finalized by a Gargoyle A. Not quite as well armored as its Timber Wolf starmates, it can match their speed and accurate laser fire at range and beat them at close ranges thanks to its targeting computer.
Those freeborth toads will beg for mercy as we take our place of honor. Glory to Clan Jade Falcon!

I like the Turkina and Ebon Jaguar. Although I'd substitute some second-line mechs that fulfill the criteria of mobility and energy -based firepower. For example: replace the Black Lanner Prime with a Vapor Eagle, replace the Stormcrow with a Rifleman IIC. and swap the Night Gyr for a Black Python (Probably won from the Steel Vipers just before Tukayyid) If none are available, go with the Summoner-D
This gives targeting computers, jump jets, pulse lasers, good armor, and removes a lot of ammo dependency from the supply chain.

Might go with a mixed nova of four Omnimechs each with an infestation, and a two fighters for the fifth point with one configured to carry Elementals to pin down and dismember anything that can out run a laser. Would an Aerospace nova point have just five elementals or ten? Because... A pair of Kirghiz-Cs with toad bombs who are trained to work with fighters, calling in CAS, that's nasty but I"m not sure is kosher. Of course... With the exception of the Dire Wolf (3/5/0) all the rest of the omnimechs in this star move 5/8/x (with the Nova actually having jump jets to go 5/8/5). While not optimized, I think it would give a good showing against the ComGuard.

The assumption being that Clan Wolf would ignore normal Clan tactical plans, and adopt an IS fighting style. With the Gargoyle and two Timber Wolves forming a fast moving battle line concentrating their fire on the greatest threat, and the Dire Wolf providing fire support. The Nova either acts as a skirmish flanker, or provides security for the Dire Wolf against any IS recon lance mechs that might become a potential threat to the slower 100-ton Assault mech (unlikely as it is...)

Serious and canon-friendly answer: Probably a Warhawk C and a Turkina alongside an isorla Timber Wolf, a Summoner and either a Stormcrow or Black Lanner. Each with their own accompanying Elemental Point if nova formations are allowed. The Clan of choice for this one should be obvious.

My Clan Wolf Alpha Galaxy star:
    Pouncer Prime
    Grendel Prime
    Stormcrow TC
    Ebon Jaguar A
    Timberwolf TC
I built this star without Tukayyid in mind (more Refusal War era), and the inclusion of the Grendel and Ebon Jaguar in a Wolf star at that time would be semi apocryphal. However I think the loadouts work for the doctrine of reduced ammo dependence the Wolves adopted in preparation for Tukayyid. They all have a strong suite of energy weapons for staying power, with only a few ammo dependent 'punch' weapons in the mix.
I chose to go with just mediums and heavies. This star is meant to be a good mix of speed and firepower, meant to hunt down and encircle an enemy then defeat them in detail. I think that gels with the Wolf ethos.

This is an interesting thought experiment, especially when you mix the differing battlegrounds of each clan with the options omnimechs give you. I'll take a stab at it, and I'll be representing my own favorite clan, the Ghost Bears.
Knowing my star is going to be fighting in cities, forests, and maybe planes, I'm going to be constructing a generalist assault star. I will admit that I wrote a small essay about it, but I decided to try and condense it down to make it easier to read.
My lineup ended up being pretty much all classic Ghost Bear Mechs, though I think at least one may be a surprise for those who aren't as familiar with the Bears. My Star consists of:
    Viper PRIME,
    Shadow Cat B,
    Executioner A,
    Kingfisher PRIME,
    and a Kodiak.
It appears that I have taken the term "Assault Star" quite literally. XD
There is a method to my madness. The Viper and Shadow Cat are to serve as scouts, with the Viper running ahead and the Shadow Cat using it's active probe to sniff out any hidden Comgaurds. All the Omnimechs are configured with mostly generalist loadouts, with some preference for city fighting. One mech that I think will be interesting to watch is the Kingfisher. For some unfathomable reason it has a standard engine, giving it an extra level of durability. It also has a very generalist loadout, but I think in this case it's in a good way.
In short, I'm pretty proud of this Star. It feels very Ghost Bear, to me anyway, and still feels formidable. Even if I may be bending the rules slightly by bringing a Kodiak to the front lines.

Lets see: Assuming I'm playing JF as well, I'm prioritizing 'mechs with mobility and energy weapons. They would also have to be survivable enough not to be easily taken out. My goal would be to wear my opponents down while not presenting them with a fair fight.
    My star would consist of:
    2 Summoner D's
1 Nova A (replacing the AMS with more DHS).
    2 Black Lanner A's.
Yup, this star of Mechwarriors have already learned that Comstar will not be playing fair, so why should they? Unlike standard clan combat, they would not be geared for short vicious fights but in for the long haul. Hitting and running and operating for extended periods without supply. They would reply less on armor and more on creating high to hit modifiers through speed and jump capabilities.

I came up with a 15k BV star on the MUL force builder the other day. It’s rather Ghost bear centric, being largely a striker star: Executioner Prime (2-gun/4-pilot), Mad Dog Prime (2/4), Nova Prime (2/4), Viper Prime (3/4), and Mist Lynx Prime (3/5). This star needs to move, but having more capable pilots I feel counters all the jumping I plan to do (a little). It’s a tad vanilla, mostly because if I introduce alt.configs, I will be forced to actually build the models for those variants. - Something tougher, without calculating BV, I would say: Warhammer IIC, Mad Dog Prime, Nova Prime, Stormcrow Prime, Horned Owl. This is just off the top of my head, no real reasoning behind it LOL.

Going with the Nova Cats for mine. Built this under the Cats Alpha Galaxy 489th Assault cluster - I liked these guys the most out of the Cats forces, built my kickstarer project around them. Came up with a generic star that could serve as a standard battle lance or fire lance in the Tukayyid campaign
    .
Super Nova - A non omni but the 489th are known to use them in frontline battle. The anchor unit for this star. Excellent long range energy damage, no min range, capable of eviscerating entire IS lances from outside their effective range. Incredibly durable as well.
Warhawk A - The bodyguard to the anchor unit with a good spread of weapons. Twin ERLL and LRM 15 for ranged damage, a respectable Lbx 10 for anti vehicle/air work, and a Streak SRM6 for exploiting holes inflicted by the other weapons .
Cauldron Born C - Twin UAC2s, LRM 15s and SRM 6s fit it firmly into the star's anti air and fire support duties. It's an all ammo loadout, but the deep ammo bins will keep it in the fight for a long time.
Huntsman B - A great skirmisher and swiss army knife design, can cover all ranges and unit types with an ERPPC, LBx10, 2 Med Pulse and 2 MGs.
Shadow Cat A - The scout unit for the star, but still packing a serious punch. Twin ERLL, Streak 6 with deep ammo bins, plus a probe for rooting out enemy units. Has the speed to get away from anything it can't outgun.
When it comes to the comm guard, I wouldn't have any idea what I would face on the battlefield, but I feel this star would be more than able to handle just about whatever Level II force the com guard can throw at it.

So, I am going for an Ad hoc style heavy star for Clan Nova Cat for my "Tukayyid Star", the fluff being this a star made of remaining forces that made it to the surface of the planet after the horrific failure of a hot drop. So a mix of frontline and Garrison mechs.
1st up is gonna be a Standard Grizzly, the true clan Thunderbolt and a beast on the board.
2nd will be a Rifleman IIC, more so a Diamond Shark mech I still think it's a decent fighter since it's got 4 Large pulse lasers and a beagle active probe.
3rd is gonna be a Summoner D variant, since the ER large lasers are a bit of a Nova Cat thing and it is a great variant.
4th is going to be Huntsman Prime, since it is an amazing spotter, Infantry/tank
killer, and great at all ranges.
Lastly a standard Supernova, it's a horrific beast on the board the only problem being the fact you can't run and Alpha strike each turn. (I jest) it's still a terrifying mech to fight and the assault of the Star.

I think I want to have all jump capable mechs so the river is less of an obstacle. Also focusing on as many energy weapons as possible to take advantage of their superior ranges and not needing resupply. My Star would be: Night Gyr Prime, Turkina B, Nova B, Summoner D, Executioner A. Everyone can jump, has almost total energy weapons and there is a Summoner so it’s automatically more Jade Falcon.

In keeping with my comment on the Comstar video - I feel like this question misses the point of why Focht's strategy at Tukkayid worked in the first place.
If I were a Clanner going into Tukkayid, I'd have bid *two* stars completely outfitted with jump jets and mount Clan heavy flamers on a few machines for the express purpose of turning concealed bunkers into porridge.
I'd have been laughed out of the room, but after the battle my Clan wouldn't have taken an 80% casualty loss and been bound to a 15-year truce.
