    Excellent advice! I wish more people made videos like this for running RPGs in general and pre-written campaigns in specific. I've run Masks before but I still found useful advice here. Please, keep up the great work!

    Thank you so much for making this / these! I've been playing other RPGs for over 30 years and started listening to CoC actual play podcasts during the start of the pandemic. I'm finally getting ready to start Keeping and for my first effort I am going to try the utterly insane course of running 'Masks' for my family. I know, horrible idea, right? These tip videos are therefore gratefully appreciated. Subscribed, and going to watch them all. :-)

    Your videos on this campaign convinced me to purchase it. Telling us how your group of investigators played this really helps. Jackson Elias is such a great NPC!

    One of the best chapters in the campaign I felt, strong in every aspect. Playing Larkin was really fun and my players really couldn't figure out who to trust. I threw in a bunch of Mexican banditos/desperados who Larkin had hired to meet them at Puno, none of the locals being willing to sign up. They looked and acted grim and the players were instantly suspicious of them, they turned out to be useful canon fodder and allies for the PCs.

    Really nice overview. Ran the original game back in 1984, so _MASKS_ has been part of my life for awhile now. Very cool to see this new prologue being outlined.

    Thanks for the video. Helpful stuff.
    I recently acquired the HP Lovecraft Historical Society's Masks Prop Box, which pretty much cements that I have to run the campaign now. I'm still going to have to build myself up, as my decade plus hiatus from the hobby has made me rusty, and I don't have a regular, in-person group.
    But your series (along with Bud's RPG Reviews's series) hare doing a lot to help me get my head on straight. Your practical and experienced advice is going to be invaluable.
    Again, thanks.

      That's awesome to hear! I would definitely recommend warming yourself up back to the Call of Cthulhu system with some one-shots. I'm sure you'll fall back into it pretty quickly and be ready to dive into masks!

    In a movie , Gus Larkin would have been best played by Klaus Kinski. I took his picture to show to my players, watched "Fitzcarraldo" (but making the characters less manic off course) and went along with a few of his ticks and mannerisms.

    Thanks for the tips! Yesterday I started the campaign, changed a little bit some events to create a conspiration about the kharisiri (Rizo was actually captured, the players had to investigate to find her and the clue with the information about Gaspar Figueroa). It was a great start. Also, I'm using the element of the larvae as a element of supernatural events, such as when players fail a sanity roll they begin to see the larvae and feel them crawling under their skin hahahah.
    Anyway, thanks for this series!!!

    Crazy timing! I just finished Peru with my group last night, within 12 hours of this upload. I hope you keep doing more content on the rest of the chapters, I've been looking forward to them since seeing your first intro to masks video (which has been a godsend when first starting prep btw). You've made this beast of a campaign much more approachable, thank you!

    I just bought the set on Saturday
    I would love to see more Keeper tips from you
    I'm just starting out as a Keeper, been drawing inspiration from other scenarios to homebrew my own, and would like to run this campaign once I have more experience under my belt
    Anything you can provide by way of tips or how to streamline the process would be helpful
    If you wrote down the scenario progression or if you used a digital format, anything helps

    Excellent video as always.
    As someone who has run MoN twice. I find Peru makes the adventure too linear. From my perspective - and others will and can validity disagree - the chaotic start to the campaign in New York, when paired with the incomprehensible and disjointed clues, creates the Fuel that jump starts the campaign. To be fair, however, I do use a one shot with Elias to introduce the players but it is a more mundane adventure ripped from the MoN Companion.
    That being said, Peru is an interesting addition.
    Best of luck with the channel!

    • @XPLovecat
      @XPLovecat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can see that, Peru is pretty linear. I found that the connections to the main story weren't too deep, so there's definitely still chaos. I'll have to mention working to create this tone for the beginning of the America chapter can help gameplay! Thank you for watching

    Great video! MoN 7e is amazing, planning to run this soon. Did you run your campaign classic style or pulp btw?

    • @XPLovecat
      @XPLovecat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I ran it classic. There are some helpful callouts for pulp in the book that I took as inspiration to spice things up, so I recommend still reading them to have ideas on hand if you decide to go classic.

    Great timing. I'm literally starting Masks this week. Are there any game prep tips you have for it? Our team ran through Two-Headed Serpent during covid, and I think they want pulpy sessions. Great Vid, thanks for making/sharing.

    I purchased this a few years back (mainly I just enjoy reading the call of Cthulhu books, I have the horror on orient express as well) and have finally got a group I feel like are ready to tackle a long campaign, we normally play dnd 3.5 and 5E so this is a different beast. I have considered running as pulp or running a short one shot like necropolis from the gateways of terror book. What are your thoughts on running as a pulp campaign or should I, being fairly new to coc run something else first.

  • @dickovdk
    @dickovdk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just ran my second game night with Peru - so this was more confirming my experience than anything else.
    First off its my first large campaign in Call, and more or less my homecoming after 30some years away from the game. Bunch of players that do not know of Cthulhu so I wanted to make it special. Masks does that....
    Yes I find Peru is really good to get back into the run of things and its a good way to start. I messed up Nayra in Puno completely but most important the party had fun. Is Jessie Hughes good or is he actually lying was the first problem they faced.
    I also played Larkin obviously the bad guy and De Mendoza REALLY evil - got to tackle him after he got to Rizo :) As for Larkin the second they feel his is a bad guy I changed his attitude toward being a victim of De Mendozas control to good effect. Odd thing though is the travel to Puno. Its really Red lining. Your drive out Monday morning (22nd of March 1921

    • @XPLovecat
      @XPLovecat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I loved hearing about your Peru experience so far! To answer your question on sessions (thank you for the callout as I realize I didn't define a "session"), ours usually last 5ish hours. So I would expect it to take 5-15 hours for Peru for an average group.

    • @ScottDorward
      @ScottDorward ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In a couple of the early playtests, I tried doing more with the journey from Lima to Puno. It didn't really add anything to the game other than time, so the redlining was a deliberate choice. That said, I have thrown stuff in there sometimes when running it for groups who get up to shenanigans during that leg.

    The timing of these videos is perfect as our group is just getting back into Cthulhu after a 5 year break. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the series. Did you use the Pulp Cthulhu rules at all when you played?

    • @XPLovecat
      @XPLovecat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We played the non-pulp rules. That being said, there were places that I took inspiration from the pulp callouts (in particular I'm thinking about the England sidetrack adventure where it talks about the painting in the closet...we had a ton of fun with this).
