The eyepiece shutter really is a great feature. I wish Canon carried it forward into the EOS cameras!

They did on their higher end models. But the A1 was packed with futuristic features

I loved mine: I even could take great sports photos with it by prefocusing to a particular distance (say the basketball hoop), then waiting for the action to come to me. Lots of f/2.8 and faster lenses made it great for indoor shots. And it didn't require moving the film advance lever to meter, which meant that left-eye-dominant folks could use it.

When I take a picture the viewer stays black until I pull the lever?

Often that's because the shutter release is sticking. You'll need to oil it. This is a common problem with the A-1.

yeah, probably a sticky shutter solenoid.
