Fantastic and thank you! Like you said lots of videos on the impeller kit replacement but nothing specific on the shaft seal. This is exactly what I was looking for. You have a new subscriber! I just removed mine! Take care.

Thanks! It has been years since i replaced a1g2 seals. I needed a refresher because I didn't remember how to get that piece out. .... just like i thought but you saved me from wondering and trying other methods

he actually did it the hard way. it's got the "hole" on both sides, use two screwdrivers at the same time. it's pressed in by HAND. just gotta lift it out evenly and it's as easy as cutting butter.
same with pressing it back in, by hand. both sides at the same time. even pressure.

that generation, it needs no explanation. screwdriver on each side, lift it with a gentle pry motion, it's removed. slide the new one in place, and press firmly on all sides, working opposite sides at the same time.
even the older models are very simple to replace the seal that does the same purpose. in those models, if the impeller gasket doesn't come cleanly off, cause the impeller melted down from lack of water or proper maintenance, gotta replace the seal.
i'd suggest pulling the part and taking it to the store with you, cause there are two models of that style and it's easy to get the wrong one.

I have that drive on my bayliner. I am also leaking gear oil out of the water intake holes. Thanks, this helps a lot.

Great video although I suspect yours is a fresh water boat as mine was a lot more corroded in. That carrier was originally alloy and you can imagine what that was like after after years in salt water. Mercruiser probably changed to plastic to make it easier to remove and let it get trashed during removal and avoid damage to the drive housing.
I was concerned when I traced my oil leak to that seal that the drive shaft bearing must be worn but compared to another identical drive there just seems to be a lot of play in that shaft when the waterpump is off so it's ok to just replace the seal and not have to go deeper.

It is easier to just use two punches, or two philips headed screwdrivers, one in each hole, and lever it out from both sides all at once. When you put the new one in, be sure to position the holes on the sides so you can do this in the future if you ever have to replace it. Also of note, some drive have a retaining clip holding the carrier seal in. Be sure to remove it first, and reinstall it.

does anyone know if you can replace the seals inside that housing? it seems like the water pump kit includes the outer O-ring and the lower rebuild kit includes the 2 internal seals. I happen to have those 2 kits and was hoping to avoid buying the carrier assembly for no reason
