This episode covers the sixth step in the journey of a guide dog, which is when our volunteer Training Dog Fosterers provide a temporary and loving home for a dog in training whilst they embark on their journey to becoming a guide dog. In this video, we meet three guide dogs in training with their volunteer Training Dog Fosterers and hear all about what makes this role so important.
Did you know we have a wide variety of volunteer Fosterer roles you can get involved with? In this video, we discuss our volunteer Training Dog - Fosterer role. You can find out more about this role at - www.guidedogs.org.uk/how-you-...
We have several other Fosterer roles where you can look after one of our puppies on a short-term basis or even one of our breeding dogs, if their volunteers go on holiday or fall ill. We also have Respite Fosterers who look after our training dogs on a short-term basis for a variety of reasons, including if the dog is unwell or is waiting for their forever home. You can find out more about these roles at - www.guidedogs.org.uk/how-you-...

I have a lot of respect for the foster carers…..can’t imagine giving the dog back though!
I’d love to know how you train your dogs to happily jump into the car. My 16 month Golden Retriever Dave who I re-homed at 8 months is problematic. Using high value treats (chicken & Primula cheese) he initially refuses to jump in but using a ramp a few times he WILL then jump in enthusiastically, then we go for a short drive for a woodland walk - he sits/stays calmly when I open the door, we go for a walk but on return to the car he completely refuses to jump in and has a ‘hissy fit’ so out comes the ramp - he continues to play up and refuses to walk up that. After 30 minutes of calm persuasion/treats with me sitting on the boot floor he can be coaxed up the ramp eventually. The next day he often refuses to go up the ramp or jump in…..any advice would be appreciated…THANK YOU

Have you had him checked by a vet to just make sure there’s nothing underlining with his health? Just a thought 😊

@@bm12797 Thanks Jenna, yes health check was ok. He is reactive on a lead probably caused by not being socialised as a young puppy plus his previous owners only ever walked him ‘off lead’ (they didn’t have any sort of lead).

@@neilurquhart8622 Bless him! Have you tried any longer lasting enrichment such as frozen licki mats or bones to entice him to enter the boot and stay? I would even practise positive association at home of rewarding him by just approaching the boot from a distance and building up his confidence. Definitely ask for advice from a local trainer too. Good luck 🤞
