“Less is more with hostas.” Agree! Very good insight. I’ve tried mass plantings of hostas but it seems to me that one big one, inter planted with other perennials of different textures, colors and sizes makes it really pop. I’ve never been able to put my finger on why it was that my hosta mass plantings never looked quite right and you just solved the riddle!
I LOVE this series of follow up videos about this planting. It’s so refreshing to hear an experienced designer revisit and edit his work and hear his thought process. I love Austin’s honesty when he’s sharing.
If only you weren’t almost half way across the country I’d be there tomorrow! The “palm looking” plant was lovely, I’d add those to my garden any day, plus so many more.
Highly recommend phlox stolonifera. Fantastic groundcover for shade, part shade, part sun. A bit aggressive but the waves or rivers of deep lavender flowers in May can't be beat. Also heuchera villosa citronella is amazing and great flower stalks.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I missed both of his lectures, so it's great to see this video and hear his presentation. Great selection of plants. Are there any bulbs that you would suggest for shade gardens? Thanks!
Austin is a genius! I love listening to him talk about planting design.

Love to hear Austin’s perspective on how overwhelming gardening can be. Thought that was only for us undertrained amateurs!
Always interesting to listen to Austin explain his design ideas, plant characteristics and how he chooses plants to create communities.
So wonderful to have found this!!
Wow! I loved being able to sit in on this talk.
Glad you enjoyed it!
