    It seems an astonishing reflection on the British tank industry when one notes how archaic this tank was for the time in which it was designed in: the poor shape of the frontal armour compared to the German big cats, the T34 and even the Sherman; the slab-sided turret, as mentioned, again compared to the German tanks; but absolutely astounding is the power to weight ratio. As somebody mentioned in the comments: the King Tiger was under-powered at around 12 hp/tonne. This thing had less than 7hp/tonne! How anybody could think this would result in a viable tank, boggles the mind.

    I generally believe if the Black Prince was fitted with the Royals Royce Meteor and possibly a reworked five speed transmission + gearbox, it could have been a very good tank. The whole design seems promising and with the churchill style, along with suspension, you could be garenteed it would probably be able to reach these hard to reach places several tanks could not, it just seems a great shame they didn't just put a little more effort into it, but as David Fletcher says the war was over and there just wasn't a need for a tank like this when we had other tanks that could do the job just as good or even better. But it is just one of those things that you wonder if it had a bit more time taken to finish the tank properly, it may have been something to not look back on. 🤔

    There was maybe a feeling that, during the war, a low-risk design was a good option, but that doesn't excuse the engine. Along comes peace, and the Centurion came out on top, also with the switch to the 20-pdr. Using the Centurion turret suggests the turret ring had the same diameter, so I suppose the Black Prince could have carried the 20-pdr, but the safe bet wasn't needed.

    The question that has to be asked really is why was this machine developed at all? We're talking the same time frame for the design as both Comet and Centurion, both vastly more well-rounded and effective machines, and well after the concept of the "infantry tank" had been proven obsolete. Churchill being fielded can be chalked up to post-Dunkirk rearming and reequipping, but this?

    I wonder if they considered stretching the Bedford engine into a flat 18 which given the other length increases would have required a relatively modest increase in length to stretch the engine bay to accommodate it.

  • @garyhill2740
    @garyhill2740 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Slow, yes. Then most tanks were not speed demons cross country during that era. By accounts, Black Prince was only a little slower than the standard Churchill, with similarly good grade climbing and trench crossing ability, as well as cross country mobility (which-other than speed-was considered excellent in Churchill). The new transmission was said to give Black Prince better maneuverability. And let's not forget armor that could withstand the German L/56 88mm or Panther gun at range, while firing back with a 17pdr.
    Black Prince was probably a better tank than it's typically made out to be. And it would have integrated readily into existing units already accustomed to Churchill's quicker and more easily than the Centurion, which would probably have taken a bit longer to get into proper service. Not to mention a certain, likely welcome, redundancy as far as spare parts and maintenance. The big problem with Black Prince was, by the time it was ready, the job it was meant for was no longer there. If Black Prince had arrived a little sooner, and knocked out a few Tigers and Panthers before wars end, it would probably be remembered entirely differently today. The tank that stopped the gap while the Centurion matured.

    @The Tank Museum I do have to ask: I do not quite get why the turret is a problem? Sure it's a bit high and flat, but so is the Tiger II's and it wasn't pointed out to be a problem on that tank, while the (early?) Centurion tank had a host of problems itself. Am I missing something?

      The side plates of T2 were canted inward at (I dunno exactly but it seems like) 18^.
      The Church’s turret sides were plum vertical.

      Some people assume that since Churchills were used in Korea (Mk VII Crocs), it must be the BP.
      Same as those that assume the Churchill AVRE only used the Petard, when post war they used the 6.5 inch BL - later called the L9 165mm, used on the MK V Cent AVRE as the L9A1 165mm.

    One does wonder what sort of tank it would have been if they had put a Meteor Engine in it. In an unrestricted version the Meteor could have produced a lot of hp and greatly improved the tanks mobility and speed. It would then have been a tank with a good gun, thick armour and decent mobility and speed. I think the governed Meteor using standard fuel could produce 600 hp. The Merlin on which the Meteor was based could produce 2000hp using aviation fuel. So 800 or 900 horsepower wouldn't have been out of the question for a suitably fettled Meteor engine in this tank. A Meteor equipped Black Prince would have been quite an impressive tank for 1944.
    I assume the reasons they didn't were twofold. Firstly, military doctrine, it was an infantry tank, so it didn't need to go fast. Secondly, industrial rivalry, it was a Leyland tank, so it was getting a Leyland engine.

    I'm confused with what he's saying about the turret armour. Isn't the front 152mm and the sides 95mm? At the angles that you'd be hoping to be hit at (the frontal ark), that's quite a bit of effective side turret armour. Better than the Tiger 2

    What Sir Fletcher did'nt mention is that the Black Prince is nicknamed "The Black Princess" in the Bovington Tank Museum, because it would drive perfectly in the arena in rehersals and when there is no event going on, but once there is a crowd watching "she" would always break down as soon as it felt people were watching. "She" also broke down 2 Chieftain's trying to tow "her" out of the arena one day and they got stuck with over 150 tonnes of steel that could'nt move out of the arena.
    Still a great video, and I can't believe that Vauxhaull made the Churchill tanks....
