  • We see the removal of the luxury cars, which were on the flooded deck of the Hoegh Osaka ship, sadly some Range Rovers had been submerged and other cars had sat in water in varying depths, luckily most decks on the Hoegh Osaka were not flooded. So the majority of cars looked OK, but what happened to the vehicles after being unloaded is unknown, just rumours.

      +bmwmsport11 The rules on this are pretty strict (at least in the UK, there is only a very limited amount of repair work you can do to a new car before they have to be written off, and they can't be broken for parts either. All the cars on the submerged decks would have been shredded whole, like the other poster said. I know this from working in a car factory.

      I actually am driving a previously flooded 2001 Ford Ranger extended cab 4x4 with the 4.0 litre V6 for work. They are rather rare around here since they have to be imported by order. But I got it flooded for £1000. It had been in someone's swimming pool for a few days due to a vendictive husband that found his cheatinv wife was having an affair. I had it running the first day and had it running new within two days. I changed the interior seats, headliner, instrument cluster, carpet, and radio with cheap Amazon aftermarket parts. I also changed the headlights to cheap amazon knock offs. The old pickup truck looks and runs like new. Only I know that the pickup truck is considered salvaged. I have had it four years with no problems after I finished the repairs. Any kid can fix a flood damaged car if they know the basics. I do not understand why they lose so much value when they are flooded in fresh water. When they are flooded in salt water, rust is always on the back of your mind.

I do not know what justifies the £72.000 priced tag when an old Jeep will put perform it off road any time and out last it any time, even if the old Jeep already has 300.000 kilometers on it. Could it be luxury that makes the price so high? No, not at all. The interior is a mismatch of modern and a 1970s throwback. I see no redeeming qualities for Range Rover vehicles at all.

The few that were saved were given to the port to use as security vehicles or something along those lines never to be driven on the street. The cars were crushed so they wouldn't flood the market with new "discounted" Mazda's which could hurt new full price Mazda sales.

      All the Mazda cars were put through the shredder after airbags were deployed and drained of fluids. Items such as rims,engine/tranny blocks,etc. were purposely destroyed before shredder time;so none of the general labor folks got any crazy ideas. The company that owns Pick N Pull was awarded the contract. Every single vehicle and 100% of its parts was shredded..............for liability reasons.
      Honda did the same thing when Hurricane Sandy hit the Eastern Shore. Honda ordered all the vehicles (affected dealerships) to destroy the vehicles immediately or face losing their Honda-Acura franchise and being sued in Federal/State Court.
      No credible manufacturer wants the liability associated with weather/write-off,etc. products. That kind of situation can literally destroy a companies reputation....and put them on the hook for the potential of Billions of dollars in the hands of the right-crooked tort law firm.

    Cars that were not damaged or flooded are easily and safely saved and ultimately sold as new- that is not a problem. Most others with some damage or moisture invasion, it is the recycle yard. It is really not a big loss since most manufacturers over produce by tens of thousands of units every year. Most of the surplus is simply recycled or parted out. The cost of this recycling overproduction is factored into every car they sell.

    I used to work for Budget car and truck rental and every car I transported back to the dealer's who they were leased from never had an oil change in over 40.000 KLM. The cars are then sold as fleet vehicles not rentals and I'm here to tell you don't ever buy an ex rental and search the title before buying to ensure they are not ex rentals or if they are sold for a bargain there's a reason. At the minimum have an oil sample done to check for impending bearing failure.
    These particular cars could be sold for cost but the liability would be an issue surrounding the chances of an Air bag fail or some other vital component like the abs.

    They were likely all scrapped... there was a similar incident on the Cougar Ace ship 10 years earlier and all the cars were crushed and the scrap metal recycled. Salvaging these to be sold would be too high of a liability for the manufacturers and the transports / cargo is usually properly insured, so not much loss for them to scrap it all... sad, but that's the way it works...

Also the manufacturers lost nothing financially, they acually gained from the repeat orders.

    • @dickdaley9059
      @dickdaley9059 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true. These vehicles are now owned by the insurance companies involved with the incident. The original manufacturers will be paid to decontaminate and remove all fluids (right down to the windshield washer fluid and shock oil) before dismantling every one in secret locations. The bodies will have any identification tags removed and then crushed. All the other parts will be destroyed in various ways based upon metals, plastics, rubber and adhesives used in production. A detailed report of every vehicle dismantled and where parts were disposed will be filed with the insurer prior to any claim being paid. This process is very similar for prototype and crash test units and is performed frequently.

    Todays cars are IMPOSSIBLE to repair once in a flood. They have an average 25-30 control boxes (computers) performing various jobs.....Even if you replaced all the boxes,you have wiring and CONNECTORS all over the car. As the car dries out and the connections rust and rot causing the current to flow sometimes and the car becomes an electrical NIGHTMARE. All vehicles with water higher than the drivers seat cushion are totalled......I have been there !

      Cars haven't use carburetors since the 1990s, even in 3rd world countries. They are all fuel injection now. It's probably the electronics and computers that are wrecked now. And a "flooded carburetor" doesn't refer to water, it means that there is too much fuel in the engine, so it cannot combust due to lack of oxygen. You can submerge an engine in water and it won't hurt it, so long as it's not running and doesn't suck any water into the intake, and as long as it doesn't get into the computer for modern cars.
