So good to see Jerry in the interview seat with David....great topic. David has a knack at getting his visitors to open up and reveal much about themselves and their blues philosophy. I agree with both these greats that improvising blues is akin speaking..in words, sentences, paragraphs even stories....and there is an added element (and both these great players know all about it) that yes the blues improviser is 'telling a story', or 'speaking' but unlike with speaking, is doing it to a background groove and paying subliminal attention to the underlying chords and the changes, and that makes the improvising more than the 'speaking' analogy. Mr. Portnoy is one of the most intelligent and talented harmonica players in the world. He learned from the best and perfected his skills . Great musician . He interprets the blues better than any players today.
